If Doomsday ever comes, and we are living in some lawless society where I am forced to rely on my stockpile of supplies and fighting off a horde coming to take my stuff, I'm just going to go out to the garage, start my car, and take a nap.

I have neither the interest, nor the ability, to live in a society like that.  (I'm the type that would have died in a sod house out on the plains back in the day.)

There is a saying on Wall Street about the doomsayers saying to sell everything ...

Never bet on the end of the world.  It will only happen once and you cannot get paid.

This applies to the preppers too.

Antibiotics are not a money maker. And, to be fair, they are becoming increasingly harder to research.

That being said, some providers hand them out like candy when they aren't necessary. Further, patients (especially parents) will demand them, not understanding the medicine. Of course, those same patients fill out surveys that determine pay to providers/hospitals, so...

They are moneymakers if it is the only one that kills a certain kind of bug. There are oral antibiotics that cost thousands of dollars for a 10-day course of treatment.

They are moneymakers if it is the only one that kills a certain kind of bug. There are oral antibiotics that cost thousands of dollars for a 10-day course of treatment.

The last new class of antibiotics to make it to clinic was discovered nearly three decades ago. No new antibiotics that have actually made it into doctor's hands have been discovered since 1987. However, there have been discoveries this year that could turn out to be game-changers.

The biggest obstacle to antibiotic development is that antibiotics are short course therapies, and Big Pharma would rather spend R&D money on drugs you have to take every day for the rest of your life.

Hence, the reasoning that this is one area where there needs to be gov't intervention. It is literally a matter of life and death.

I suggest everyone get caught up on the first season and a half of "Last Man on Earth" so we can anticipate what challenges we might face post-virus.

And nuts to Keefe... I will teach myself how to fly a B-2, or at the very least, I just need to learn how to operate the ejector seat.  I can't imagine how much fun it's going to be ejecting over Lake Mendota and watching that beast crash land into Camp Randall, or the Memorial Union, or somewhere in between.  Thankfully, the size of campus makes for a pretty unmissable target.

Is that really daily doom?  All 10 million of those people will probably be dead by 2050 any way.  I want my doom now, dammit!

"Financial disaster is looming, and not because of the stock market or subprime loans. The coming crisis is more insidious, structural, and almost certain to blow up eventually.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) predicts that by 2050 the world will face a $400 trillion shortfall (pdf) in retirement savings. (Yes, that’s trillion, with a “T”.) The WEF defines a shortfall as anything less than what’s required to provide 70% of a person’s pre-retirement income via public pensions and private savings.

The US will find itself in the biggest hole, falling $137 trillion short of what’s necessary to fund adequate retirements in 2050. It is followed by China’s $119 trillion shortfall."

It has everything to do with being a sexual object. Women with long hair are considered more attractive so society decides that is what girls should look like. When someone chooses not to, society sometimes chooses to try and force them back into the mold.

A boy with long hair is similar but different example. The story would have been more about how boys need to be manly and tough and appearing with a feminine trait makes him weak or gay.

Being a sexual object doesn't mean the guy who banned the young girl was thinking of her in a sexual way. It just means that he subscribes to the belief that men have short hair and women have long hair and anything outside of the mold is not appropriate.

I'm trying to figure out how that conversation went.

"You're team is disqualified."

"What, why?"

"You have a boy on the team."

"We do? Who?"

"Him."

"Her?"

"No him."

"That's a girl."

"No it isn't."

It reminds me of a situation I saw during the 2K Classic in NYC. My family and I went. Mrs. TAMU's family is from long island so we went out to dinner in the city with her sister and her sister's girlfriend. The sister's girlfriend has a very short haircut so she sometimes get mistaken for a boy. No big deal she's used to it. When our waiter took our order he called her "sir." She laughed it off and corrected him. He looked uncomfortable but didn't saying anything. He came back and did it again. She corrected him again. He came back again and did it a third time. My mom stopped him and politely said, "Sir, you keep referring to her as a boy, she's a girl." He stopped, looked right a the sister's girlfriend and said "I'm so sorry, SIR" with as much emphasis on the sir as he could muster. He didn't get a tip from us.

C'Mon TAMU.  That's how we got to a point where an innocent peck on the cheek at a school dance got to be sexual assault unless some university form was signed in triplicate.  This is no longer a world I recognize.

Now THAT'S legit. The guy was an unbelievable Ahole.

And let me add that someone who can't get over a sexual preference issue might need to do some maturing. I have two close friends who have an alternate preference.  I'm saddened that in the early '80s the world in which we lived might have made them uncomfortable. I've apologized to both if I ever told a stupid 'joke' in their presence.  Both said 'No worries, long time ago.' Both are close friends today.

First, you're begging for a timeout. Second, the headline is false - the poll didn't ask if colleges are bad for the US. That's a ridiculous LIE.

I could be missing something but what do you think the poll says?

This is directly from the Pew Research Center, not from any media covering the poll.

Quote
% who say colleges and universities have a positive/negative effect on the way things are going in the country

<img width="420" height="379" src="http://assets.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2017/07/10093922/1_3.png" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="Since 2015, Republicans’ views of the impact of colleges have turned much more negative" /> (http://www.people-press.org/2017/07/10/sharp-partisan-divisions-in-views-of-national-institutions/1_3-16/)

Is there a significant difference between "bad for the US" and "has a negative impact on the way things are going in the country"?

Not to get all stat nerd on you, but 49% of the population would be below average, not 50%. Plus, I'd actually assume that human intelligence doesn't follow a standard bell curve distribution, but what do I know.

Wouldn't it be 49.99% (repeating, of course) -- which is much closer to 50% than 49%.   ;)  And I'm not even going to touch the distribution issue.

The way I heard it was, "whenever you're amazed by how dumb the average person is, remember that half of the people are even dumber."

Totally different thing. You can shut off or leave a phone behind, your chip hand not so much. Additionally, I can think of no benefit from an employee standpoint to being chipped....any benefit can be accomplished with an RFID badge. The only tangible benefit is for the company as a security issue. An implanted RFID chip makes it much more likely that whoever is logging in, is actually whose logging in since it replaces passwords.

Would not chip.

While 100% true, this is a bridge too far into big brother for this upper middle aged man.  I simply find it creepy and would never agree to it.  The only exception I would consider would be as a safety issue for a severe alzheimer's patient or some other very significant mental disorder so as only to protect that individual, and then, only with court supervision to prevent abuse.

Keefe, thank you for your service to our country, and I know you're sworn to secrecy and all, but how long will the chemtrailing be goin on? Is it about "solar radiation" mitigation? WWHD? What would Haarp do? How is Monsanto/Bayer moving on its aluminum-resistant seed patents? Barium, Strontium, Aluminum showing up in record levels in American soil samples. Yeah, they are contrails. Of course they are. Like the time I walked in the forest preserve on a cold day and saw my breath trail stretch for 2 miles? Look up to the sky, people!! Now try really hard to remember how it used to look.

Also, any updates on Agenda 21 and directed energy weaponry and how it was used in conjunction with the CA wildfires to destroy entire neighborhoods all while the streets, plastic garbage cans, and even trees still stand? All so stack-and-pack housing can go up. Gotta  make way for  Heisy/Tugg's happy village of Autonomous rides!

Not a Hillary fan at all, but if you guys haven't figured out Trump is a controlled-opposition elitist shill by now. Oy Vey! NWO and globalism rock!!

Its a side-effect of treating other illnesses with antibiotics. Antibiotics caused the C. difficile bacteria to multiply in a patient's stomach. When expelled, the bacteria then has the opportunity to circulate. In high antibiotic-use environments, like a hospital or nursing home, it can spread like wildfire.

For those that are older and/or comprised by other health issues, it can be fatal. Very serious.

I was on a very serious course of antibiotics after a bad case of cellulitis and it destroyed my insides. I had kidney issues, a bleeding stomach ulcer which made me anemic but the worst was C. difficile. I lost almost 40 pounds in two weeks. Horrible experience.

Climate change, yadda yadda.  No need for the link, really.

1/3 of millenials not sure the earth is round

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2018/04/05/millennials-flat-earth-survey/

Dr. LeBlanc taught a United Nations class I took at MU. I had never even heard of The Flat Earth Society until a student in his class asked why the UN chose a FlatEarth map for its logo/flag. I will never forget LeBlanc's answer: "Well, the official response you will hear to that is that this configuration more easily allows for a visual depiction of complete UN membership." I thought to myself, "what is the unofficial answer?"!!

I taught a middle school astronomy class, and I am well-versed in what our Astronomy books teach. So please take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt....

The NASA imagery of Earth that we are fed changes radically from year to year and from decade to decade. One year, the North American continent appears to take up half the sphere, then five years later the same continent appears half its size.

The very logo of NASA itself features a serpent-like tongue.

Physicist Auguste Piccard in the early 20th century rode a balloon structure to the limits of the stratosphere and reported that the Earth appeared completely flat with upturned edges. His works were mysteriously "severely underreported" by media outlets of the day, according to several historians.

NASA is on record within the past year of saying that getting past the Van Allen radiation belt makes a manned flight going back to the moon "very difficult, if not impossible."  WHHAAAT?!!

Genius director Stanley Kubrick's daughter is on record stating that her father took liberties making Stephen King's THE SHINING into a movie, mainly so that he could communicate his angst and guilt over accepting the duties of staging our Moon landing. The movie functions on two levels, but Kubrick wanted to thumb his nose at NASA and the US govt.

The theory behind why there would be a vast effort to hide the true nature of the Earth goes something like this....Free Masons, who have dominated international political discourse for centuries, were a response to a repressive Church. The primacy of consumerism over spirituality was easy to take root if the Sun was millions of miles away and at the center of our universe, while we here on Earth were both hurtling around said Sun, all while spinning madly on our tilted axis. Heliocentric theory was thus put forth by Nicholas Copernicus as a response to geocentrism. The Jesuits backed Copernican thought.  (Thank God? Or Thank Man?)

Curvature of the earth is NEVER seen atop a skyscraper or in a jet, even at altitudes of over 3o,000 feet. People are seeing the appearance of curvature due to fish-eye lenses installed in buildings and on most commercial airliners.

Water always finds its level. While one can certainly slosh water around in a glass to mimic waves on an Ocean surface, isn't it a bit strange to imagine a spinning ball Earth made up of mostly Ocean water curving around a sphere, the concept of "gravity" notwithstanding?

Remember, President Nixon once said, "The American people will believe anything if they see it on TV." Yes, today, that could be modified to "the internet."

Remember also that our own CIA many years ago said that their mission would be complete when people believe that Down is Up, Fiction is Truth etc. Maybe this flat earth stuff is part of their deception. Or is it truth?

Think about all the things you were taught in grade school that turned out to be simplistic and merely part of the  socialization process. The world was one in which your entire day consisted of depending on and submitting to authority figures in your life. This was so out of necessity. Then we learned to think on our own.

I can explain the seasons, apparent motion, synchronous rotation (why we see only one side of the Moon) very well with the Globe model I grew up with. There are those who can explain night and day, seasons, etc using a Flat Earth model and a stationary, fixed Earth. Some of these proponents are fiercely religious, and some even fundamentalist in their strict interpretation of the Bible and its description of the Firmament, separating "waters below from the waters above." However, many Flat Earthers are secular humanists and approach the debate from an anti-capitalist bent.

I am in no way stating that the Earth is flat, nor even that I believe it to be flat. I will be ridiculed here for even broaching the subject. During a very difficult time in my life of being a full-time caregiver for my elderly parents, I reminisced about my coming-of-age years in the mid 1980s. I started noticing that music video after music video featured pyramid imagery, often with bright capstone light at the top. While I believe talk of the "illuminati" is a bit ridiculous, I know that talk of Free Masonry and elites, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission and social clubs like Bohemian Grove, not to mention fraternal clubs like Skull and Bones is anything but frivolous. Ask yourself if there could be any vested interest in those groups keeping God far away and distant from mankind? It certainly sets a tone for a "divide and conquer" mentality that has been so pervasive in our world.

I believe there are elite memberships in this world that only the most powerful are a part of.  Bilderberg, FreeMasons, Skull & Bones, but to what extent these or other entities have goes from the small to the conspiratorial.  Hard to say with events that have taken place in the last 25 years, or even last 3 years what could be going on.  Conspiracy delight for sure.

I have this - got it from a tick bite on Kiawah Island a little under 5 years ago.  TBH - cutting out mammal from the diet isn't very hard.  It's the cross contamination issues that suck - order a grilled chicken sandwich from a place that cooks them right next to a burger = toast, that wok was just used for beef fried rice = toast, etc.

Hooters has also been one-upped (two-upped?) by chains that have increased the overt sexuality such as Twin Peaks, Red Neck Heaven, Tilted Kilt, Tight Ends.  There is a lot more competition in the breastraunt space than there used to be.

From twitter:

"going to a subpar beer & wings restaurant to leer at/take pics with big-boobed waitresses is one of the most uniquely baby-boomer male concepts and I am laughing my ass off at the idea that it's some sort of sacred cultural institution that millenials are crapting all over"

This is false advertising at its finest.  They may be able to catch a pass or two, but not one of those ladies has the frame to block a 270-lb DE.

That came across my feed as well and i thought it was perfect.  the holy trinity baby boomer imagery is Hooters, Sean Hannity and a McMansion.

A strange thing has happened to men over the past few decades: We’ve become increasingly infertile, so much so that within a generation we may lose the ability to reproduce entirely.  What’s causing this mysterious drop in sperm counts—and is there any way to reverse it before it’s too late?

(Probable answer: Arby's.)

Within a generation, we won't need a man to make a baby.

Witin a generation we will not need a woman to make a baby either.

We are almost there on both fertilizing without a man, and making an embryo without a woman.  I'd say 15-20 years we can fertilize without a man, and it will be widespread in clinical practice.  Similar for embryo's without women.

The lagging factor will be an artificial womb from fertilization, gestation and birth.  That may be 20-30 years out.

7-degree rise in global temperatures by 2100

Last month, deep in a 500-page environmental impact statement, the Trump administration made a startling assumption: On its current course, the planet will warm a disastrous 7 degrees by the end of this century.

A rise of 7 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 4 degrees Celsius, compared with preindustrial levels would be catastrophic, according to scientists. Many coral reefs would dissolve in increasingly acidic oceans. Parts of Manhattan and Miami would be underwater without costly coastal defenses. Extreme heat waves would routinely smother large parts of the globe.

Let's face it, there is zero percent chance the world collectively pulls its sh!t together and decreases greenhouse gases by 45%.  Zero.  We're going to have to figure out a not-prohibitively-expensive way to suck the gases out of the air and sequester them, and even then we are probably f'd because the ocean will have become a huge heat sink.

I'm putting this in the doom category.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/29/opinion/american-economy-working-class.html

TL;DR:  Great economy.  60% dissatisfied with the country.  Last year was the worst in a study for "well being."  Disappointment by the young.    Crisis of connection.

People, especially in the middle- and working-class slices of society, are less likely to volunteer in their community, less likely to go to church, less likely to know their neighbors, less likely to be married than they were at any time over the past several decades.

And they are dying. On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that life expectancy in the United States declined for the third straight year. This is an absolutely stunning trend.'

..And yet here we are — a straight-up social catastrophe.

Economic anxiety is now downstream from and merged with sociological, psychological and spiritual decay.

Already, 2018 promises to be one of the most violent years on record in the country. Homicides shot up 16 percent during the first half of this year — a number that has been rising at an alarming rate over the last two years as splintered groups of drug traffickers and gangs battle for dominance."

Kaminsky then took action and helped carry the baby down 46 flights to get out of the building.

That is still far lower homicide rates than in countries like the Bahamas (28.4 per 100,000), Jamaica (47.01), Saint Kitts (34.23), Virgin Islands (49.26), El Salvador (82.84), Guatemala (27.26). Honduras (56.52), and many others.  The average in the Americas is 16.3. Way higher than any other area in the world (Africa 12.5, Europe 3.0, Asia 2.9, average for world 6.2).

When we vacation in the uber luxurious all-inclusive resorts (we call paradise), we often never realize what life is like for the people living in those countries.

There was just a story on this re West Virginia as the bell weather.  WV has been about 10 years ahead of national curves, first in terms of obesity, then diabetes, and now opioids deaths.  Life span for WV residents showed a downturn ahead of the rest of the U.S.

There was just a story on this re West Virginia as the bell weather.  WV has been about 10 years ahead of national curves, first in terms of obesity, then diabetes, and now opioids deaths.  Life span for WV residents showed a downturn ahead of the rest of the U.S.

Hmm, a shame we don't have a link to such a story...   ;)

Why would anyone go to a Panda Express?  There is probably always a decent mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant near every single one of them.

Because their orange chicken is perfect American orange chicken. Not some actual Asians trying to replicate American orange chicken.

And honestly, I've seen too many Chinese kitchens. It's horrific and apparently way too common.
