Im not sure that's what the poll said. The poll had them say on a scale of 0 to 100 with 100 being "on the edge of a civil war." The mean score for independents was around 70. That doesn't mean 70% of people think a civil war is likely. I think the only ones in that poll who could be definitively categorized as "thinking a civil war is likely" would be the ones who marked 100.

Maybe I missed something in the poll but I think people think the country is very politically divided,  not that a civil war is likely

Fair point.  The media reporting it said likely, one report said imminent, another said on the edge.

A score of 100 was "edge of a civil war."  Which means "civil war" is something like 105 or 110, at worst.  So if we're at mean of 67 now, we're only whatever percentage 67/105 to 110 amounts to towards civil war.  That doesn't seem so bad.

The real doom in the study is that 84% of the respondents agreed with the statement: "I'm tired of leaders compromising my values and ideals.  I want leaders who will stand up to the other side."  What makes it especially concerning is how the conclusions imply that this may only be the beginning of an existing general decline in civility.  In short, nobody is willing to compromise, nobody wants to hear from anyone who disagrees with their opinion, and everyone would rather fight than make a deal.

Which apparently makes Scoop the canary in the coal mine of societal incivility.  And here we thought it was Topper simply forewarning of doom when it turns out he's actually been the one sowing the seeds.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Oh, yes absolutely.  I thought that was clear!

Any border state that contains Dayton should be an immediate candidate for Canadian annexation.

Good effing point. PTM is real, real tired of Ohio being the swing state every election.

On the other hand, 87 percent of poll respondents agreed that "compromise and common ground should be the goal for political leaders," with 64 percent strongly agreeing with that statement.
Which I take to mean that everybody wants the politicians who agree with them to "stand up to the other side" while the politicians who don't agree with them should compromise.

tl;dr: We're all hypocrites ... or at least more than 80 percent of us are.

Glad we have a politics thread again.

I would like you to do us a favor, though ... don't make this contingent on digging up dirt on Greg Gard.

Why isn't that Dutch girl worring about this disaster?  She'd get way more converts to her cause.

Obviously she went to the wrong country to make her case.
