Prosecutors say evidence clears him. He's set to be executed today.

All life matters, though.

EDIT: The execution went through. When he is exonerated in a couple/few years, it will be little solace.

He's basically been exonerated, but the court system doesn't care.  And the MO governor is a POS for ignoring the stay.

And overall, we are a barbaric country for still using the death penalty.

Can't be a good Catholic and pro death penalty.

Sometimes, when it comes to that, I am not a good Catholic.

Good thing Brit Reid was pardoned tho

lol. They're mad because they call it "fall mini-break?"  Even the people who are upset over "Happy Holidays" think that's a bit much.

We are not a serious country
.

Its an article about a global situation by a Canadian news source and your inclination is immediately fault the US? That's a bit myopic and self-flagellating.

I can't cop to being myopic.

But I love self-flagellation

Sincerely though, the US should be leading in this area.

US is #2 global emitter with #1 installing more renewables than the rest of the world combined? Yeah it's probably fine to criticize the US when companies are trending in the opposite direction due to AI investment.

Eric Schmidt's solution was to "ask the AI" because otherwise it's too late.

Yet China still experienced record emissions growth last year, did they not?

Listen, I know this is your space so I'm not trying to have a gotcha moment.  And I'm not a climate change denier.  I'm just of the mentality that true shifts for the positive will be due to technological changes on a global scale that make clean energy cheaper and a no brainer.  Performative individual measures are just that.

Ive seen the pollution in India and China first hand, been multiple times in each where you were highly advised not to go outside cause the air quality was so bad.  Until stuff like that is severely mitigated and not just a continuing trend in the future (Ive been to 4 major Indian metros, including their supposed tech hub, the idea that there is a true push there to be green and meaningfully reverse their emissions profile anytime soon is just vaporware) , I have mild issues with being like "Americans are so selfish and awful" cause they aren't all driving electric cars and taking public transportation.  Its not excusing away current policy, its just pushing back on some people's need to always view American habits and policy as uniquely horrible.  The US is second to China in renewables installed, right?

(Not trying to specifically shade Jesu, but I don't think he'd necessarily disagree with being characterized as doing the latter  ;D)

You're not too far off.

I agree that even if the US is net zero (or even negative), we likely won't change the global scale of change.

My frustration is that mindset leading to arguments that we shouldn't do much.

IMO, instead, the US should be pushing development of tech that would lead to that cheap clean energy you discuss. We could approach this like a moon landing or highway system or other national project. Use carrots and sticks.

Instead, groups that would see their currently entrenched bottom lines threatened push against any significant advancement. Combine that with everything needing to be a political wedge issue and it seems to always be 1 step forward and 1 step back.

Btw - public transit would be great for a lot of reasons, but I'm not sure how much better it would be for climate change. Same with EVs. Start with energy generation/production and go from there.

Yeah my frustration lies with a lot of these companies being at the forefront of the green operations movement then when the next big thing (bubble?) arrives it's abandoned immediately.

It's also why I'm super cynical about corporate ESG initiatives because it's abandoned when it becomes inconvenient

Planet-warming pollution is growing at the fastest rate in history, scientists say

https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2024/10/28/wmo-report-record-greenhouse-gases/?

Planet-warming pollution in Earth's atmosphere last year hit the highest levels in human history, scientists announced Monday — a worrying indicator of the world's failure to curb climate change as global temperatures are on track to hit yet another record high.

Concentrations of carbon dioxide — the most important driver of global warming — are now growing faster than at any time since our species evolved, according to the World Meteorological Organization's annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. The increase can be traced back to stubbornly high rates of fossil fuel consumption, the report said, as well as ecosystems that are becoming more likely to produce emissions and potentially less capable of absorbing excess carbon.

Levels of the potent greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide also hit all-time highs in 2023, the WMO said. The total heat-trapping potential of the atmosphere is now 51.5 percent higher than in 1990, when United Nations scientists first warned the world was on track for catastrophic climate change.

Washington Post: Most of the country can expect less snow than usual this winter.

Why? It's a continuation of a decades-long trend — as the world has warmed, most places have had less snow. Today's children won't remember winter the way their parents do.

Northern Wisconsin businesses can't afford another winter like last.  Not feasible.  Hoping they get lots of snow or they'll have to learn how to code
