Vander is a good team player, will work hard on D which is necessary in that league and knows the guys on the team . Would be a nice fit if there is a retirement.
I would like back to back titles with the potential of a 5-peat.

Best I can tell, he played in Canada last year for the Guelph Nitehawks.
We've enjoyed it 3 separate years in person and of course last year on TV. Absolutely great basketball.
I've enjoyed watching this, but I haven't taken the time to get well-versed in everything TBT. Folks here are talking about us "going" for certain players. Do fans have a say about who is on the team? Is that part of the TBT's appeal?

In the past Joe Chapman and Dan Fitzgerald have selected the team members, I believe.

Fans can recruit other "fans" to get points. If you have a high enough point total, you share in the final winnings.
I believe that at one point teams needed to get enough fan votes to qualify. I think with the MU's team success and fanfare, they haven't had to do that.

I know that you auto qualify I think if you're in semis.
Thanks for the answers. So no, we have absolutely no say as to who is on the team ... which is probably a good thing.

There is a name I haven't heard in a while, another prime example of why even hyped kids don't make it and to take advantage of the education. CEBL has a salary of $6000 per team per game.
Wojo is probably looking for some run now that his noon games are cancelled.

literally the ONLY thing I know about TUW is that he was a Very Bad Man. The very first thing I thought of when I saw the announcement was "hmm, this probably wasn't a good idea."
Cool logo though. Stripped of the "Ultimate" part of the name and it was probably fine? (honestly have no idea how the imagery connects to the dude).

The logo looks to match his face paint.
Even without the Ultimate Warrior part, a little surprised they'd go the Warriors route due to the team's connection to the university.
How long until Heise starts a thread asking if this was actually the MU administration getting the TBT team to do this, knowing there would be uproar and hoping it ruins the Warriors nickname so the fanbase can stop talking about bringing back Warriors?

yeah, not a good decision. It's bad enough to call themselves the "Ultimate Warriors" but to have the logo that makes it seem like they're honoring the guy, wow, who messed up on that one.

I mean if you're gonna go that way just make it the warriors and say its an omage to the teams of the 70's more than anything.
I think were dropping the ball on how weird it is to name your team after a WWE wrestler in the first place
This is a poor idea. Some incorporation of Warriors would've been a clever way for MUBB alumni to endorse the Warriors name but why they went the route of the Ultimate Warrior, when everybody with Google knows how toxic he is, is beyond me.

True, if it weren't for TUW getting his turn under the twitter microscope a few years ago that stuck in the dustbin of my mind, I wouldn't know who he is at all. I wonder what the crossover of oldtimey wrasslin' fans and TBT fans is.

I honestly had no clue about the post-wrestling history of Ultimate Warrior, but I'm not a wrestling fan at all - perhaps it's common knowledge amongst wrestling fans. Then again, maybe they didn't even think to Google the guy's background, and they were just kids when he said most of this stuff.
That being said, I don't think it'd take much to get them to reconsider the name - the Hurricane Katrina and Heath Ledger comments alone should be enough to eliminate any homage to the guy.

Ugh.
To me it seems very strange that the marquette tbt team would do much of anything for a wwe guy.
Is it possible the tbt guys wanted to play under warriors, but also needed something in front? They pick ultimate for some reason, then the designer guys went with it and did something very similar to the wwe guy?

As I think more about this question...
I love the characters of the Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, etc. But I also know the guys that play them are bad guys (racist/homophobe, racist, wife beater). In that sense I can separate the actor and the character.
On the flip side, I wouldn't want my team called the Cliff Huxtables even though I enjoy that character.

This is what I think is most likely to be what happened. I mean even the older guys on the squad couldn't have been old enough to remember him as a wrestler.

The Redskins logo isn't taken anymore, maybe we should use that. ::)
Not knowing who Jerry Falwell is doesn't make Liberty University less problematic. Not knowing who Harvey Weinstein is doesn't mean a film festival with his name on it would be in good taste. This is essentially celebrating a racist homophobe. In no way shape or form is that something we should celebrate.

SNL had a very good skit in the season finale. It was supposed to be a Gameshow Network replay of an older Hollywood Squares episode. And they had "Bill Cosby", "Jared Fogle", people like that and when asked a question instead of showing the answer, they kept playing a warning sign that "We are omitting showing this segment due to the current revelations since originally filmed."

And as mentioned, Jim Hellwig changed his name so the person and character were one in the same. And using that logo only reinforces it.
This isn't hard or complicated. You don't go out of your way to celebrate racists or homophobes. That is just common sense. Anonymous Eagle nailed it:

The ironic part is the TBT team is using a racist to evoke memories of Marquette's own racist past. It's like "the racist caricature of our past isn't enough, let's remind everyone with a different form of racism and let's double down with homophobia!" Oh, and that the same people who needed fainting couches for Gold are fine with the racist version of the name change.

This would've been the best route. Also it's what I genuinely thought MU's mascot was when I was applying because my dad kept saying Warriors but I kept hearing the TV calling us the "Golden" 'somethings'
In the logo, just change ULTIMATE to MARQUETTE and tweak the face paint into more of a bird and everything is good.
If anyone is really that offended by the new name, then they have two options: 1) not watch or support the team or 2) watch the team as a hypocrite but continue to demand the team changes its name through social media or letter writing campaigns. Do I agree with what Ultimate Warrior said? Absolutely not. Does the team utilizing a log that incorporates his wrestling gimmick automatically speak to my personal views? Again, no.
Unfortunately, there will always be tremendously unhappy people that will not be content until everyone around them is as unhappy as they are. Very unfortunate.
So does this mean Benjamin Martin in the Patriot, was an anti semite all along?!
It would seem to me the team needs to put something out that either says
"we wanted to pay homage to the Marquette Warriors name while avoiding the association with the native imagery. We were not aware of his past statements and do not condone them"
Or
"We chose to focus on the character in spite of his statements"
Or
"We love him and are huge fans and condone his statements"
Basically leaving it be probably isn't the best decision right now.

He wasn't really Mel gibsons character, the character was made by writers and interpreted by Mel. On top of that Mel didn't change his name and try to make Benjamin Martin be who he was in reality.
If you have outrage at the Ultimate Warriors name and logo shouldn't you have that same outrage towards the Marquette Warriors name and logo?
Seems like a double standard to say how awful the Ultimate Warriors are yet wear Marquette Warriors t-shirts.

Put me in this camp.
Wonder why they'd even change the name at this point? They just won a championship under the Golden Eagles name. Every single MU alum on the team played for the Golden Eagles.
My first guess: MU's legal dept. politely asked them to change the name to avoid trademark dilution (I work in IP - I'm sure MU loves the added publicity this team brings, but the TBT team to use what is essentially the university's official team name hurts their ability to enforce trademark rights in the future).
My second guess: some alum who cannot and will not ever get over the Warriors name paid them a bit of dough (perhaps enough to cover travel costs?) to bring back the Warriors in some form or fashion. This is what they landed on.
Who sends a lawyer letter first? Marquette University, or the WWE

As a fellow dorky wrestling fan I am bummed that the Ultimate Warrior turned out to be a total douchebag which keeps the name/logo change from being an amazing confluence of all of my favorite things, and that i will think of that when i see and root for this TBT team, which is otherwise the height of frivolous summer fun.
I'm not really outraged, I'm more just puzzled. It seems like it's a odd choice in today's day and age given everyone's (perceived/real?) hypersensitivity. It was easily foreseeable that the name and logo would provoke at least some semblance of this reaction... and the choice to go forward with it anyway suggests to me either:
1. They did not conduct due diligence in this branding endeavor, which is... well, a pretty cavalier choice, or
2. They did conduct due diligence and either didn't care what reaction it would provoke (again, a pretty cavalier choice) or did not imagine anyone would care (which seems hard to imagine considering that all anyone yammering about these days seems to be "cancel culture")
Whatever, a dead wrestler I never watched and would not know existed were it not for his moment in the spotlight a few years ago for being a racist is the inspiration for the name. Sure, fine. I can separate the jackwagon from the TBT team branding. To the extent that I care at all, I care that this branding courted backlash and causes them to have to deal with all this noise.

It should be noted that the guys running this team all have full time jobs. They've given way more to MU, #mubb fans and TBT than the $83,000 they've received. It's a part time, summer fun thing. I'm pretty sure some of the players are just big wrestling fans and wanted to do something "cool" and it meshed with MU's hoops past.

If you have outrage at the Ultimate Warriors name and logo shouldn't you have that same outrage towards the Marquette Warriors name and logo?
Seems like a double standard to say how awful the Ultimate Warriors are yet wear Marquette Warriors t-shirts.
Completely fair. I stopped wearing Warriors stuff myself years ago and turned down free Warriors gear earlier this month.
I'm glad Marquette moved away from Warriors and glad they had the foresight to stay away. Willie Wampum and the blatantly racist past associated with the nickname is a part of our history, but a part better left in the past. It'd be nice if the TBT team had the same prescience to stay away from racist iconography.

I suspect this is the case as well.
Will be interesting to see where they go from here. No matter whether you believe this is hugely inappropriate or you believe it is no big deal, it is sure to cause a lot of noise that detracts from their accomplishments and distracts from this year's team.

but (and I get that I was one of the people to point out the connection) is it though?
Like, outside of the corner of Extremely Online fandom, is either the Ultimate Warrior's name, likeness, or personal history even known a bit? If it weren't for a little bruhaha I read while bored at work several years ago, I would have seen the name as a callback to the pre-Golden Eagles name and Mexican Luchador type masks and that's it. So, what I mean to say is: Is it entirely possible that outside of the animated few who are predisposed to hear from each other will anyone even realize there's an issue here?

You might very well be right. I personally had no idea who Ultimate Warrior was, and if forced to guess would have said MMA or something similar; I certainly wasn't familiar enough to know about his past statements.
But now that it is out there, and many people have made the connection, I don't guess that the controversy will just fade away.

I think for the most part, wrestling fans would be the only ones immediately aware, but there's a surprisingly large cross section of WWE/Big East fans (led by the former Big East Coast Bias podcast hosts) which is why it immediately stood out as a poor choice to me.
After Gold, it just amazes me anyone would make a shift like this without doing a Google search first.

We're approaching 30 years as Golden Eagles. One of our greatest traditions is we don't have traditions. We change uniforms, mascots and nickname more than the Pittsburgh Steelers change coaches.
Let's starting working on the next name and let's trial balloon it with TBT.

I'm pretty sure none of us who don't like the name are demanding a name change "through social media or letter writing campaigns". We're just pointing out the naming a basketball team after a guy who clearly outed himself as racist and homophobic in real life seems like an odd choice. I honestly think the guys probably have no idea about his persona outside of wrestling, but if you were to show them his comments on Katrina victims, MLK, etc. today, they probably wouldn't make the same choice.
And being mindful of other's feelings and/or who I hold in high esteem doesn't make me unhappy.

Not one person "demanded" that it be changed. Brew asked that they reconsider.
The Ultimate Warrior was a character played by a guy. Just because he changed his named does not make him the character from the WWF. If Christian Bale changed his name to Bruce Wayne doesn't make him Batman. Same with the 10,000 characters played by actors and actresses over time.
So the guy who played the Ultimate Warrior was a scum bag. Doesn't change that his character was wildly popular and in no way reflects on the guys who are playing. Move along.

More terrible analogies.
Lotsa people struggled with logic back in the day...
He's a made up character (thus the WWE lawsuit against him). But I guess you think Godfather was a real pimp outside the ring. Or Iron Sheik loved the Aytollah even though he fled Iran. And Ivan Kolofff, also known as the Russian Bear, grew up on a dairy farm in Canada.

Nope. Think again. They are indistinguishable regardless of what other characters you are mentioning.
Are you planning on going 3/3 in bad analogies?
And because these wrestling characters are indistinguishable is why Knoxville elected Kane as their mayor. For non wrestling fans Google Kane WWE and tell me what in the characters plot lines would make you want to vote for him as mayor.

I actually believe their statement that they were unaware of his non-wrestling past. I know they could have spent time Googling etc. before making a name change, but it's not like they have a marketing dept. - it's just some guys who have other things going on in their lives who probably had fond childhood memories of a wrestler. That being said, they definitely made the right decision to chuck the name change.

Choosing Ultimate Warrior seems to have been an honest mistake. I think they handled going back correctly after realizing why that part of their decision was poorly conceived.
However, it is worth noting that simply trying to affiliate with the Warriors nickname Marquette has spent 27 years trying to walk away from due to the racism inherent in that name most visible in the 1950s & 60s was also a misstep. There have been multi-million dollar attempts to go back to it by alumni, calls from the fans, and Marquette has not wavered in refusing to affiliate the University with that moniker.
That was also a mistake, and far closer to being one of commission.
Glad they made the change. Looking forward to our team challenging for a title again

Also, that isn't doxing. Doxing would be taking a posters private information (Such as address, phone, name, etc) and making that knowledge known to the public.
The moderator posted publicly available information about a professor who wouldn't have reasonable assumption of privacy over such information. Now it would have been doxing had the moderator said such and such poster is the professor, here is his info, go at him.

I'm pretty meh on this logo. Not really a fan of the blue and gold shades they chose. Might just be how those shades interact with the black.

Yeah, and I don't know what that flame thing is coming out of its eye. And what is it with the white and blue "Golden?"
Way overproduced.
Clearly a rip off the Golden Knights, but I love it. Definitely a subtle homage to a type of Warrior mascot.
If I were gonna rip off a warrior team though I'd have a picture of the 6th street bridge and call us the Golden Warriors.

It's fine for what it is, and better than a reference to the Ultimate Warrior, but in no way should the university adopt this logo.
It reminds me of the DePaul logo
https://depaulbluedemons.com/
At least it's better than the old logo - which was of a Bald Eagle, not a Golden Eagle - and looked like Microsoft clip art.
So who will replace DJO ( out with injury) on this years TBT? The guy had the heart of lion so they need to take that into consideration.
I've heard Markus isn't good enough to play in the NBA. Maybe he'd play? Then again, do you want a cancer on your team when you just beat a team named Sideline Cancer in the finals?
DJO out, Vander in. Jamil Wilson not yet shown on roster.

Vander is a nice addition, he's still only 28 and can ball.
But the sleeper for me is Matt Lojeski. He's 25, but he has played the last decade for the cream of the crop teams in Greece (Olympiacos, Panathiakos, and AEK Athens) and was the top scorer in the Euroleague a couple years back. Dude is a real solid player. Takes over that Diener role probably

How about Loj?
I'm not Instagram privy and didn't find anything on a quick search.
I would love these additions because Van was one of my recent favorites at MU and I'm a big Olympiakos fan so I also love Lojeski

How much height is typically in this tournament. Other than the year Sullinger played, I thought most teams played pretty small lineups. I know Gardner was basically unplayable due to not being able to guard anyone.
Maybe one more big guy for when Fischer gets in foul trouble. If Jamil plays, he'd probably cover the big guy. Or Cook.

I figure this year with no bubble, he may join the team, even if he's largely there as a coach.

Also explains why the TBT was retweeting the fact that we weren't done adding on just the other day.

When I was at MU it was the Hilltopers, and I was anxious for something else. I was pleased with Warriors, but when the controversy with the Indian feelings emerged, I agreed and embraced the Eagles. It's all trivial, and sensitive to Native Americans. Warriors is forgotten and I am fine with that. Most students don't remember the former and have no burning desire to return to it. Let's grow up and move into a new century with empathy for the beliefs of others, pride in our past and hope for our future.

Again whether or not a majority are insulted is irrelevant. All that matters is that a significant population of reasonable people are. The offensive imagery (Willie Wampum) was eliminated 22 years before the name Warriors was dropped. What followed was a series of inauthentic attempts by MU administrators to adopt "safe" replacements (Bleautaux, I cannot burn your moppy image out of my mind) that only whitewashed things and infuriated alumni even more (at a time when these same geniuses wanted to drop MUBB to DIII). It ended with an administration sell-out in exchange for land, compounded later with the ham-handed Gold fiasco.
Just as people adopt the term "Social Justice Warrior" today, MU could have found a way to make it fit the fabric of what the university was founded on and stood for. San Diego State Aztecs, FSU Seminoles, the Oakland Warriors and even the Potawatomis themselves (let's face it, betting is not true to the Native American heritage) have found a way to commercially market their imagery in a socially acceptable way.
And just to be clear, many of the same people advocating for "Warriors" today protested the Willie Wampum imagery back in 1971 when it was rightly dropped. More so, these same people were indeed SJWs on social, racial and anti-war issues. The BB coach and team stood up against this center stage: With their uniforms, their brashness, their f/u to the racist NCAA and with cutting down nets with switchblades. Warriors stood for something. The switch, not so much.
That said, the Warrior fabric has been broken long ago and diminished by administrators who never understood this history nor cared. It is far better in my mind to have Warriors as the underground nickname while tepidly having the Golden Eagles as the official (even though that imagery has absolutely nothing to do with the university's history or heritage and the birds aren't even seen in SE Wisconsin). It could have been done but the time has passed. A switch back now would be as inauthentic and offensive as a purple fuzzy ball of yarn was in the 1980's.
Move along people but I will continue to where my tasteful Marquette Warrior gear that fell of the back off the truck as my statement of protest.

I'm one of those "reasonable people" (imo) who has always been offended by "redskins". It was a derogatory slur when I was growing up and that is always how I will view it.
However, I have oft times been lectured here (fairly) that words over time either change their meanings or the effects they have on people. Some that were perfectly fine in my youth are off limits now. Does that also work in reverse? You say it doesn't matter if a majority are offended. I agree. But 90% isn't remotely close to 50/50. It's a super, super majority and it's rare that any poll is that overwhelmingly one sided. I disagree with the 90%, but doesn't their opinion matter?

Can you give me an example? I honestly can't think of one so I'm inclined to say no.

You say it doesn't matter if a majority are offended. I agree. But 90% isn't remotely close to 50/50. It's a super, super majority and it's rare that any poll is that overwhelmingly one sided. I disagree with the 90%, but doesn't their opinion matter?
Of course their opinion matters. But that doesn't mean that you ignore the minority. There are literally 1000s of nicknames that they will also find to not be offensive.
Quote from: Dr. Blackheart on July 18, 2021, 10:41:57 AM
Great post Dr. B. The name change was definitely executed in a way to try to hide from the mistakes of the past rather than take ownership for them and do better moving forward. It was the cowardly way to address it.
MU changing their name from Warriors to Golden Eagles hasn't effected me in any way shape or form. When Native American groups ask teams not to use their history as a mascot it seems like a really simple concession to make. They deserve a lot more.

ok, so MU has not embraced the BLM 'organization', just the 'movement'. Hmm. Well, I doubt too many folks get that. Since the BLM organization is garbage, MU should find a different approach, a different way to promote the black lives sentiment. The connotation is bad. In fact, wasn't that one reason given as to MU not remaining Warriors, but with a different mascot? The connotation of negative NA imagery was too great? Oh well, it is what it is and probably always will be. But man, Golden Eagles is just sooo lame.

...not debating, just asking...what about the University seal with Explorer Pere Marquette in a canoe with a Native American? The relationship between European explorer and NA's was significant, and should be embraced, IMO. The Warriors moniker and 'logo' from '82 or thereabouts, and going forward, seemed pretty benign.

I have no problem with the seal. But I also just don't really get all hung up on those things either. If the University wants to change because people are taking offense to it, it really doesn't bother me one bit.
I should also add that Marquette does a bunch of things more significant in its relationships with Natives than its seal and former nickname.

I don't think connotation means what you think it does. But I think I understand what you are trying to say. There will always be reasons/excuses to not support a social justice movement. There were plenty of people during the 1960s who said that they couldn't support MLK's movement because of Malcolm X, or because of King's views on Vietnam, or because of King's personal failings etc. The movement was still just. The Warriors nickname is not a social justice movement. It is a mascot. Trying to compare the two doesn't work.

I've been wrong before but I agree with you that I don't see it changing. At this point, I think there are more living Golden Eagles alumni than Warrior alumni and that disparity will only grow. I actually don't have a problem with Golden Eagle as a mascot. Not the most unique name and certainly not related to MU history in anyway besides gold being our color, but they are bada$$ creatures IRL.

I'm not sure I can count that one. I could have the history wrong, but my understanding is that gay was used to refer to men who were attracted to other men before it became a slur. It became a slur because gays were considered lesser in society so using the correct term for a gay man as an insult worked. I don't know that the meaning of the word has changed, I think we now just recognize that using the proper term as an insult is not appropriate. Even so, gay is still used as an insult by some in society.

Because, a la Al, some players are there for practice, and can be called upon if truly needed. If Travis isn't hitting or making passes, then maybe Rowsey comes in. He wasn't needed today.
For Sacar, I imagine that if our inside game is not working, he will come in to cut and drive. Again, it wasn't needed today. And Vander seems the first choice for that role. Understandably.

9 point lead at halftime and the B1 guys got the ball to start the second half.
Chapman went fullcourt press to start the half and the MU guys scored the first 8 points before B1 got the ball over halfcourt.

Hmmmm....okay. It's gonna be tough to fill DJO's shoes. He basically went full badass mode in numerous stretches last year.
I agree with Dreams. Vander looked good in his 'easy' moments when he was free in the lane and had a great but simple steal. Yet he didn't look confident like he could take over for some minutes (though no one really did, including Buycks and Jamil who should be expected to do so).
It was the first game, and I think/hope the team will settle in, and contributions will be consistent and valuable.

I agree that Cook has been a wonderful addition. I'll also say that I think that Dan Fitzgerald and Joe Chapman have done a great job of seeing needs, filling gaps and managing the roster. And players have stepped up to play key roles. (For example, I love both Acker and D. Wilson on this team, along with Travis.)
I am satisfied with Golden Eagles but with the comments on Marquette and Joliet perhaps we could have considered Explorers
Very ironic that over the years Derrick has been a solid contributor to the success of the Golden Eagles team .
I think Defense and Passing are the two key important ingredients for a team to win in these games . Derrick definitely plays hard on defense and he moves the ball around well to guys who are wide open.

I have really enjoyed watching Dwight Buycks play in this event over the years. He is a very entertaining player who plays hard every possession.
Vander struggled to get going early. Lots of driving into the lane with his head own. Later in the game he showed tremendous ability jumping into passing lanes and getting easy scores. Seemed to get him going. I think his play will pick up as the tournament continues.
Like what I saw from Lojeski too. Think he will be more of an asset than Charlo when he settles in. Kind of wish Rowsey/Anim got in later on, but I guess I see why they don't need every guy. Cook is the star of the team this year.

Wins a win. Gonna need to play much better going forward but we got it done down the stretch.
Jamil heading to the merch table to buy a new jersey.
Marquette wins 71 - 64.
Sacar sparks the team in the 4Q.
Derrick Wilson with a big 3 in the Elam Ending.

Big 3 by Derrick Wilson, followed by 3 for Jamil Wilson and MU escapes!
Marquette did not play well. The 4Q was a mess with everyone launching 3s. No one could hit - and that was true on both sides. For some reason, no one from Marquette ever took it to the hole so it was just a matter of hoping the shots would eventually go down. To me, Derrick Wilson had the big shot.

Good win against a capable team .
Can't knock Chapman's success but I sure don't understand why Fisher only played two minutes after the game he had Sunday. Marquette was killed on the boards 40 to 30.
Derrick Effen Wilson!
He has made as many 3s in the last two games as he did in his first 3 seasons at Marquette. Stepped confidently into 'em. Good for him ... and good for the Golden Eagles!
Jamil has been clutch in the TBT over the years. Reminds me of Davidson!
Fun game, even if our shooters were cold. Hoping that Cook doesn't have an injury that will linger.
I wish Elgin Cook had played for Marquette. Love his game.

Derrick has had quite the impressive Euro career. Last year he was over 40% from 3. The year before he averaged 20 points per game.

Shoulda been 7, but refs didnt know we were in bonus at end of 2h
DJO's offense seems missing and unfortunately Vander hasn't been able to entirely pick up that slack but good game for the team nonetheless. Really would have liked seem to have seen Cook play at Marquette, man is he fun to watch

Minor nit: Refs don't keep track of that kind of thing. It's up to the scorer's table to sound the horn and let the refs know it was a bonus situation. And both teams usually have a rep at the table, too, in part to make sure the official scorer doesn't mess up.

Vander has been inactive at the competitive level since December 2019. He is still a little rusty, however is working hard to play the defensive roles Chapman needs him to play.
I think he may do well offensively the next game , as the scouting report may not focus on him.

I'm not sure how much of a role it plays, but to me it seems like Chapman being the coach is a nice advantage for the MU team. He seems to know his stuff and has the perfect demeanor for this type of event. Calm, but will challenge the guys. Some of the other coaches seem to just be friends of some guys on the team.

Yeah, that was funny.
Does anybody here know Joe personally, or know a lot about him? Does he have any interest in getting into coaching?
I'm not sure how much these kinds of events tell us about actual X-and-O coaching ability -- maybe a lot, maybe a little, as I said I'm not sure -- but Joe definitely seems to have the right demeanor for it, and he seems to have the respect of the professional basketball players under his charge. That means a lot.

He runs his own respected basketball academy in WI and (I believe) coached an AAU program. I have no doubt that he has the X-and-O ability to coach at even the college level.
That being said, those academies/clinics can be a pretty big cash cow, so the financial motivation to coach a "team" may not be there. He's coaching and getting paid to do so, just without the added pressure of W-L results.

Joe is a great guy but he just with Travis and another person, built Athletic Performance Center. Coaching at least 75 teams in AAU so right now I do not see him
leaving that situation, maybe later on yes, but has a nice job right now. Never know the future.

I thought this was TBT? How many fouls have they called on us?
The TO's we are forcing are nice but..
Gonna need to stop fouling and giving them easy baskets on the non TO possessions.
Our defense needs to be better. Hard doubles if we have a small guarding in the post.
Can we make some free throws?
Ball movement is incredible.

Bum ankle and mostly a liability out there. When hes on D his guy looks to go 1 on 1.
On offense he doesnt really compliment our ball movement offense that usually ends in a open 3 and good drive.
Second half we played the veteran studs and main role guys.

Heck I am usually king pessimist and I think the worst thing I said was that we had a horrendous stretch to start the 4th(stone cold fact) that appeared to be a result of playing for Elam.
There was absolutely nothing over the top in this thread.
Was never worried after that run to start the third. Think we were way too experienced to ever be in any real danger. We were also very consistently getting good looks so even if the D wasn't the best at times you always felt like the O would get us over the line.

One thing I enjoy about the TBT team is how they move the ball around. They really have a great eye for where the open man is. They also understand where their teammates want to shoot from. The last play was a great example. The ball moved down the floor to Acker who saw Diener running down the sideline, Acker made a beautiful cross court pass right to where Diener could catch and shoot it on the run for the winner.

Cuse is gonna be really tough. Especially with them poaching some of the Overseas Elite guys.
But if the good guys keep moving the ball and getting mostly great looks, I like our chances to have a red hot shooting game.

Sometimes I can get carried away, I'll admit that. But to answer your question "unconscionable turnovers" are those that happen at critical junctures in the game that are either entirely unforced, or caused by ghosts. That's the Modern Oxford English Dictionary definition.

If we could simply relentlessly attack, minimize the dumpster fire turns, and shred the nets consistently from distance, people might actually find my words paciifistic and reasonable.

Vander had been out of basketball since December 2019 , when he got laid off by the Santa Cruz Warriors g league . His mom died as well which was tough on him . So he had some rust coming into the TBT . He has been slowing getting back in form. Had a nice 5 minute run last game where he contributed 8 points . I think we will see even more today and a lot of hustle from Vander
Let's go now! I cannot stand Syracuse past or present.
Just hearing the Devendorf name triggers some stuff........
Excellent offensive quarter. Need to do a bit better on the defensive glass. Also, things went a little out of whack when Luke entered the game. He struggles mightily defensively. TBT Warriors up by 6. Is that Elgin Cook or Elgin Baylor?
We've gotta figure out how to secure the defensive glass. Killing us and will be hard to overcome. They have 10+ offensive rebs.
Was that a travel on Buckys?? WTF? Cost us a triple. Smh.
Offensive rebounds are the only reason this game isn't a blowout. Not sure why they have Cook chasing around the ball handler while Buycks/Diener/Derrick are trying to bang in the post defensively.
TBT Warriors up 39-32. We're doing damage from distance and moving thr rock well offensively. Terrific half in particular for Buckys. On the flipside we are getting punished a bit inside and especially on the glass. Solid half, just need to keep up the efficiency on offense. And rebound with a bit more tenacity.

Good point. We need to axe some of the auto-switching.
We need Jamil to find some heat soon.
Fischer needs to be in this game

Yes Herman. Missed three triples,, two wide open. It's gonna be tough if we can't rebound. at all. They must have at least 15+ extra possessions? Gotta find a way to clean the glass. NOW.

He struggled defensively but we may have no choice. Lojeaki??
Acker can't play. Length on him defensively and they're just attacking him offensively.
Huge shot by Diener.
Huge three from Travis. Let's go now! Thatta boy Luke.
BAM!! Diener once again!!
Diener, so hot right now
58-80 TBT Warriors up to start the 4th Q. Huge stretch for TD to give us this cushion when it was a 1pt lead. Luke was solid as well. But we still have to rebound. They must have something absurd like 20 2nd chance opportunities.
wats in deiners water bottle?
Great shot by Uncle Drew!
Damn. Luke has to secure that reb.
damn
Ughhh. 6pt swing their way. Need to get Buycks back in the game. Jamil just off with his J, hopefully he finds it.
Jamil's footwork on his jumper is so ugly.
He headbutted Mo. WTH?
Ridiculous shot by Richardson.
Diener time to close?
f off with that 3
No Diener? Huge miss by Jamil. Fk.
jamil missed like 6 straight
They call a foul on that??? Smh. What a shame.
Haha the free throw and the ball on a loose ball foul. The Elam ending sucks.

Really unfortunate. We were in perfect position Johnny.
Yea just went cold, dont have the size to compete with them
Need a triple here.
What was that?? Smh.
19-4 run is pretty pathetic. didnt deserve the win
Jamil picked a real bad time to play some awful basketball
The difference was offensive rebounds, didn't like Chapmans rotations at all
Pretty sure Tyrese Rice just had 5 straight layups or fouls drawn. Horrible defense.
No one wanted to take a shot. Jamil shooting was brutal. Felt like Vander was getting to the basket with relative ease.

Nothing to do with elam. That's a rule they're experimenting for ncaa and nba.
True, True. Rebounding and D.

yeah what the hell. just easily blew by for open lay ups
Very frustrating loss. It just wasn't Jamil's day and we had no answer for Rice. I also thought Diener lost his mojo when he sat extended mins. Still they sort of bully balled us. Hopefully DJO is back and we add an additional big.

too afraid of giving up the 3 they just gave him 5 layups instead.
Hot take that Matt was just a bad pickup. His shooting wasn't great, and his defense there... ouch

The lack of help d was dumbfounding down the stretch.
All goods things eventually come to an end.
Unfortunate day for Jamil.
Need a couple of roster revisions for next year. Hopefully , DJO comes back healthy.
Grab defensive rebounds, make some shots. Ah, well.
Need to add size. And its gonna have to come from a non-MU alum.

Is there a versatile big we can add with Milwaukee connections? We definitely missed DJO. Just a money player with tremendous physical toughness and coast to coast jets.
wats sam decker N nigel hayes up to?

Let's think.....who's out there?
Eventually Cain or Theo. Bailey? Someday Henry?
It was fun while it lasted.
Back to the Olympics.
Wow, that was disappointing. Lead all the way in time portion of the game. Stinks losing to the Syracuse squad.

In the end it was a BC guy who beat them.
What happened to Cook in the 4th?
of the 6 guys that played 12+ minutes today, only two of them were former Syracuse players (McCullough & Richardson).
the others; Deandre Kane, Iowa State; DJ Kennedy, St John's; Tyrese Rice, Boston College, Keifer Sykes UW-Green Bay
Boeheim's Mercenary Army.

Boeheim has always been a prick. Just like No Dick.

So what? No requirement that they graduate from Syracuse. Sour grapes.
I felt the offensive rebs were eventually going to bite us in the ass. That said if Jamil hits a few shots we get the W. He's been an outstanding TBT player, unfortunately he had an off game. I do think Diener should have stayed on the floor when he had it rolling to start the 4Q and Rice absolutely killed us and we didn't get the ball out of his hands. It's a game we should have won which sucks.

Honestly, I wish Golden Eagles had gone after Overseas Elite guys too. Especially after the DJO injury.
I would like to see JJJ on this team . I think he would fit in well.

We need one more big and DJO to come back Herman. Ellenson could be an option? The rebounding today was absolutely brutal.
It was great fun watching TBT so far this year and the finalists are deserving. While I was hoping to see MU in the finals tomorrow, I'm still headed to Dayton to see the game.
I predict a few years drought coming up as the players who are "good enough" get too old, and the alum from the Wojo years aren't good enough. I can't see Henry, Rowsey, Sacar, Fischer going far. Duane Wilson and Deonte could probably contribute in this format if they would re-join the "MU" group. it was nice to see Vander back. Too bad he wasn't really in shape.

Henry would be solid. He wouldn't play, but he'd be solid. Agree though we're looking at a big drop off unless we start getting Wojos transfers/early departures
It was a great final. Close game. Winner from UWGB alum Kiefer Sykes who was the player of the game.
Dayton closed the half of the arena behind the players, so the base lines and one side were available for spectators and it was about 40% full. Probably 3000 is my guess. Mostly Syracuse fans including the royal Boeheim family. I bought what showed as row 3 on ticketmaster and it turned out to be front row. Only $30/seat. Great value even if surrounded by orange!
Overall a great experience.
