I appreciate Jay Bee's knowledge and explanation of the numerous rules in college bball, but specifically in regard to recruiting....when have they ever been widely followed? If Shaka can continue to be as successful as he has been while following the rules, great! It is not often that the cheaters are substantially penalized when caught, but sometimes they are. Guys like Bill Self have made a mockery of rule enforcement over many years, and he is still there.
We will never know for certain but I believe the rules in the past were widely followed. I think the cheaters were in the minority, which gave them a huge advantage. The cheaters were high profile which gave the impression that it was widespread, but IMO were more like 10% of the 350 schools.

As for today, I honestly don't know where the school's rules (or commonly referred to as the NCAA) end and the states laws begin. I would say today that most schools are in violation of the university's policies. I'd go so far as to say that any coach or college following NCAA policy is failing the stakeholders. (weird to say)

The rational underpinning the argument for NIL (supporter here), that the athletes are only being afforded opportunities available to all other students, has been completely blown out of the water and has further tilted the playing field to the "haves" (like MU) which IMO runs afoul of the spirit of competition.

Fair enough in your first paragraph. I would add that schools well below the top 10% probably had neither the $ nor the cache' to attract top recruits anyway.

Good point about the state laws, but the Federal government may decide, with their clearly superior wisdom on all matters  ;D , to get involved as well. My Gawd, the NCAA blew their chance to handle NIL! Instead, they fought NIL all the way to the Supreme Court, where they not only lost 9-0, but (I think) also got lectured in the wording of the SCOTUS ruling.

What's funny about this? Sultan was president of the George Michael fan club. All they did was surround George & Wham. But the club had no affiliation with George or the group.

We just had to make sure to keep our affiliation quiet. You know...prevent any careless whispers from getting us is trouble.

Great program, great coach and solid fan base. Hard to argue with the choice.

I think they won something recently.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

He committed to USC a few months ago. I don't think he will be playing anywhere this season or ever again. I hope I'm wrong but even his children's children are financially sound so why risk it.

Uhhh, pretty big leap. Let's let the doctors look into this and then determine potentially reasonable paths

I agree to wait and see, but 'big leap' I think not. If had been alone, he would be dead. He ended up in the ICU. It was not some fainting episode.

Yeah, ok. His current teammate went into cardiac arrest last summer.... and then played that season.

Can we at least agree that MU should not hire USC conditioning coach?  :D

This site has Owens as top 40 with the following blurb:

"It was a bit of a streaky early spring, but I thought it was an exceptionally strong summer for Marquette-bound Damarius Owens. The 6-7 wing seems to be more athletic with each viewing, flying around on both ends and playing above the rim with consistency. He does a lot with a little, and while he's not a guy that a high volume of plays are draw up towards, he's always around the ball and finding avenues to impact winning. Owens does a ton well, and continues to grow in polish, but my favorite trait is his brisk decision-making offensively. The ball never sticks, and whether it's a play for himself or for someone else, he's looking to make the simple play more times than not. In North Augusta, the City Rocks wing hit his stride from deep shooting 40% on over 5 3PA per game and showed to be more consistent mechanically. The defensive end is where he's hung his hat though, as he'll be a hand in glove fit under Shaka Smart with his length, activity and knack for generating deflections. There's plenty of room to grow as a ball-handler, and while the brisk processing ability is impressive, he still has stretch of playing too sped up and forcing the issue. Yet, I think his upside has ridden a bit under the radar as a 3 & D wing who continues to progress across the board. We're the highest on him in the industry by a strong margin, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him continue to rise."

Sounds like a match made in heaven

... and Mr. Hodge in at 55

Matt Hodge

55th Overall

Swiss-Army Knife productivity was present from the very first viewing early last fall upon his arrival in the US, and it all translated to the EYBL stage. At 6-8 with high level functional athleticism, Hodge has a knack for doing all the little things to impact winning. Rebounding, connective playmaking, switchability defensively and toughness to secure loose balls. However as the spring rolled into the summer, the St. Rose (NJ) wing began to find further consistency as a catch and shoot threat from deep. From the Belgian national team in FIBA play, to St. Rose and to PSA, he's fluidly toggled through roles and found avenues to bring winning value regardless of his offensive usage. A seamless fit within a team construct as a versatile four-man, while flashing plenty more juice as an offensive hub when given the opportunity. Still unranked by most of the industry, he's quickly become a priority high-major recruit and for due reason.

MU82

Owens sounds perfect for what Shaka wants to do. Hopefully, Hodge will join him and Parham.

Weather may have played a role then... there were bad storms on Wednesday morning if I recall.  If they fly him up just for the day then that might have postponed the visit.
