Jim Jeffries. Don't hate.

Yeah, don't get that one.  I saw his Dry Hole bit....too angry.

Super interesting.

I am an avid Chappelle, Burr, Black, Gaffigan, etc fan.   And I love Carlin.

Pryor and Murphy, I feel like their humor is mostly fart humor...it's funny and stuff, but Carlin makes one think.

Eddie Murphy is fart humor?  Are you talking about his standup or just judging him off of The Nutty Professor?  His standups were critically acclaimed and still are to this day.  And I'm hard pressed to find them as toilet humor  :o

Have you seen a full set from him?  Or are you not getting a comedian off of one bit?  And funny that you think he's angry but love Burr.  The angriest Irishman alive, and I really like Burr.

A group of 5 of us saw Murphy in Greensboro in 1987. 3 of us nearly died laughing and could not believe the other 2 completely hated it. Despite being in their 30's then they were disgusted with the number of F-bombs.

I saw his standup back in the day at the MECCA.  I own delirious and Raw.  Maybe fart humor isn't the right way to describe it...look, I find him funny, but it's not deep thinking humor in my opinion.  Chasing the ice cream truck, building a fire, poop in the bath tub, it's funny but not the same in my opinion.

Jeffries I have seen a few of his bits, just don't find them too funny but will keep on trying.

Anthony Jeselnik. Jokes that don't end the way you think they are going to. A lot of "I cannot believe he just said that" moments. Big fan.  Thoughts and Prayers is a classic.

"I was in a bar last night, saw this beautiful woman. Like a supermodel. I walked up, I was like, "Hey, where you from? What do you do?" She goes, "Oh, me? I live here in San Francisco. I'm a brain surgeon." I don't know if this makes me sexist, but I was really impressed. You know? I mean, most women can't pull off sarcasm."

First time I heard the Salt & Pepper diner bit I almost pee'd my pants. It's not the most Earth shattering bit ever but it is amazingly funny.

Fantastic bit. I really like Mulaney. I also really like Mike Birbiglia and Jim Gaffigan, completing the Georgetown trifecta.

Jeselnik is unbelievably funny to me. He's awful, terrible and causes more groans and "I can't believe he just said that" responses than pretty much anyone I've ever heard. His Casey Anthony bits is one of the most awful - and hilarious- bits I've ever heard. I'm a little ashamed to admit that.

I have to say that Bill Cosby's Self stand-up was just about the funniest thing I'd seen especially when I saw it as a kid and then again when I had a kid but it's really weird/hard to talk about though given who Cosby turned out to be. My dad use to use the line "I brought you into this life, I'll take you out of it" on my all the time when I was a kid, so much so that it entered by lexicon and I've really had to unlearn that.

To a way lesser degree Eddie Murphy's comedy is the same, especially in his hey day he was wildly homophobic.....doesn't make him less funny but it's tough to look past some of that in retrospect. There is pushing the envelope and then there is stuff you believe in your core.

That's where I think someone like Carlin or Jeselnik or Chapelle are critical....I don't get the sense that the comedy they are using is built out of some core belief but really centered around the need to force people to think in a funny/constructive way. They are provocateurs without being morally provocative.
"A Plan? Oh man, I hate plans. That means were gonna have to do stuff. Can't we just have a strategy......or a mission statement."

"Dad is great!  Gives us the chocolate cake!"  Cosby had some really good stand-up.  Turns out he's an awful, evil person...but he was really funny.

If you want another really funny stand-up from that era that hasn't drugged and raped dozens of women (AFAIK), Bob Newhart's Button Down Mind was really good.

Lot of people in the comedy business think Mulaney is the best joke writer going right now.  With the exception of his failed sitcom, he's been tremendously successful and very funny in a variety of mediums.  And his standup is tight and pristine.

I think of his bit about college calling ("We want a gift! But only if it's money! ...I gave you a HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS and you SPENT IT ALREADY?!?") every time I get an email or letter from MU.

There was about a 5-year stretch when Steve Martin was the funniest man alive. His standup act was effen hilarious, and The Jerk was good, stupid fun.

Then he stopped doing standup and started making cute, heartwarming movies. And then he became an artist and musician and who knows what else.

The only really funny movie he has made in the last 35 years was Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and he was John Candy's straight man in that one. Candy was so funny in it.

That's the brilliance of Steve Martin as a comedian.  He can do it all comedy-wise.

Greeting cards. People buy these crappy cards for like $4.89?!?!? What's the margin on these things, 98%??? I don't remember when it happened, but at some point the price of these skyrocketed. It's bizarre. Monopoly hey?
