FYI, Young Frankenstein is a parody of the Frankenstein movie. Are you familiar with Mel Brooks? If not, you're offseason homework is to watch Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood Men in Tights, History of the World Part 1, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein.

You forgot High Anxiety, the Hitchcock parody.

Interesting......

In all seriousness, though, that is a hell of a list and puts us in tremendous position in 2018 should everything remain constant and if Joey comes along for the ride.

Jamarl Baker Corona Roosevelt Is that one, two or four recruits?

I would think with Elliott committing, we are out on Baker unless one plays PG.

I think both "can" play PG, but aren't traditional PGs.

That's my read as well. Seems like both are combo guards.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I'm going to differ with you here. Mid-year transfers are worse for the players because they effectively lose a year of eligibility, but are much better for the team. Here's why:

  • Play sooner: A mid-year transfer will be eligible to play for you 11 months (roughly) after arrival, a traditional transfer will have to wait 19 months (April-November plus a year).
  • Needs known: When you get a mid-year guy, you already know your needs for next year. In our case, we knew we lost out on Tillman so Froling made sense. The roster is more set when you take a mid-year guy and there's less chance they won't fit your needs.
  • Grad Transfer: Traditional transfers are often guys that end up becoming grad transfers later, so you lose out on your investment. Mid-year transfers don't have that option so you get back what you put into them.
  • Total play time: The one advantage for traditional transfers is you get complete seasons. Two in the case of a sophomore like Rowsey, or three in the case of a freshman like Froling. But look at Luke. Mid-year transfer that missed 8 games, so he played 2.75 seasons, as opposed to if he waited he would've played 3. The extra 8 games is negligible when you factor in the risk of grad transfer, the ability to get the player eligible for you sooner, and the fact that most of those missed games will be against cupcakes when you likely need the impact player less.
If I'm a player, I wouldn't want to do the mid-year transfer. It absolutely hurts the player by reducing his playing time as well as his options later. But if I'm a school, there's no doubt I want those mid-year kids when I can get them. Much better value for the school to take a kid in January than there is in April.
I tend to prefer the traditional sit out a year model of transfer. Kid gets to work out and train hard for a year, develop chemistry with team mates, understand the coaching staff philosophy, become a part of the school academically  and is ready to go when he is eligible. That is not to say there are not circumstances where the mid year transfer is a big positive for the school. To your point when there is a known need it makes sense for the school. For example Luke fills a gaping hole for us that first year., even though it would have been much better for him to actually sit out a year and get physically healthy.   We literally had no choice that year.

But all of those things happen with the mid-year too. Froling gets to work out and train hard for a year and it's already paying off with results. He's on the bench and in practice from January through December developing chemistry with teammates and learning the coaching staff philosophy. He has two full semesters when he isn't playing in games to become part of the school academically. And as we saw with Luke, he was ready to go when eligible as he was one of our best players his sophomore year.

Considering Luke's shoulder issues followed his entire career here, I'm not sure a few more months would've made any more difference. The mid-year thing represents change and a different mindset, which is always hard to accept. We think "they only get X and a half years" and think we're losing a ton of time, but it's simply not true. It's 8 games, maybe 10 if the schedule doesn't favor the player. So at worst it's still less than a third of a season the player loses.

Granted, for the player it sucks because they effectively lose a year (but get to play again sooner) but for the school it's a better situation than the full year out.

I'd personally trade Luke's first 0.75 year playing at Marquette for having Luke all year next year.

Each situation is different.  The team wasn't going to the NCAAs his first year eligible to play at Marquette, so I'd trade having him around next year knowing he'd be a difference maker on a team with a chance to make some noise.

I wouldn't. We had no idea how 2015 would go, but without Luke we wouldn't have been competitive. Our scholarship situation was so bad that we had to add the Mache twins just to have practice.

It's all hindsight, but 2015 was bad with Luke and would've been a trainwreck without him. At the time, the idea of a NIT bid wasn't inconceivable. We had just lost Dawson and Burton, we needed any bodies and adding an impact big with Steve Taylor and Juan Anderson as our options at center was a necessity.

We needed Luke that year, and frankly more so than next year, even knowing what we know now.
