Lowery is heading to prep school.    I will worry about him in a year.  Or two.   Maybe three.    Oh, wait, because MU is stacked at guard.     Seriously, unless somebody leaves, Zaide will be the 7th guard on the roster.   (Kolek, Mitchell, KJones, Ellis, SJones, Ross)    You can never have too many big, athletic, slashing, multi-position defending players on your roster.     However, there is absolutely no pressure on Zaide to produce at MU until at least two years from this coming season.

Need to sign a versatile big wing or Estrella type with the last schollie.

Don't worry about Lowery.

Unless, after a year of prep school, Lowery actually is better than some, many, most or all guards on the roster.

But I agree with you about not worrying about him. I don't worry about any of these recruits. I'll wait until they start playing in games to decide if they can be P6 impact players or not, and even then it usually takes multiple years.

I am looking at the scholarship table, curious why he is recruiting another guard?  Really needs one of the big boys to replace Weightsil at this point. MU really spends a ton of money bringing kids in, with maybe one or two openings next year.  If he signs 2 more, it really puts a bad sign on the kids here right now.  Who is the top priority?  Estella or Royal?  What happened to Dai Dai as well?

I fully expect us to be running mostly 3-guard sets eventually. That is Shaka's regular method.

  • 2016, 33 games: 5'11" Javan Felix, 6'3" Isaiah Taylor, 6'3" Demarcus Holland, 6'3" Kendal Yancy combined for 97/99 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • 2017, 33 games: 6'2" Jacob Young, 6'3" Eric Davis, 6'3" Kendal Yancy, 6'4" Kerwin Roach, 6'4" Andrew Jones combined for 88/99 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • 2018, 34 games: 6'2" Matt Coleman, 6'2" Jacob Young, 6'4" Kerwin Roach, 6'4" Andrew Jones, 6'5" Jase Febres combined for 96/102 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • 2019, 37 games: 6'1" Elijah Mitrou-Long, 6'2" Matt Coleman, 6'3" Courtney Ramey, 6'4" Kerwin Roach, 6'5" Jase Febres combined for 111/111 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • 2020, 31 games: 6'2" Matt Coleman, 6'3" Courtney Ramey, 6'4" Andrew Jones, 6'5" Jase Febres combined for 92/93 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • 2021, 27 games: 6'2" Matt Coleman, 6'3" Courtney Ramey, 6'4" Andrew Jones combined for 79/81 starts at the 1-3 positions.
  • TOTAL, 195 games: 563/585 starts (96.2%) at the 1-3 positions came from players 6'5" and smaller.
This staff seems to prefer having three guards. I expect we'll start to see that this year. My guess right now is Sean Jones, Tyler Kolek, Kam Jones, and Stevie Mitchell vying for three of the five starting positions and the fourth of them being first off the bench. In the long run, we'll probably go 5 deep in terms of guards rotating in at those positions.

With that in mind, having 7 scholarships dedicated to the back court makes sense. 5 in rotation, 1 in reserve, 1 for a redshirt. And that still leaves you with 6 scholarships to fill the two front court positions, which typically should be more than enough.

BCHoopster

Some will play next year and some will leave early.  I can not see it any other way but try and over recruit what you have now.  These are one year scholarships now, so player movement will happen.  Need at least one to leave. These are the times

Kind of interesting to see Travis Steele trying to tap the MU Well. Was trying to recruit Greg Elliott and now hires Carl Richburg. Good formula to go after Big East talent for The MAC

Marquette offered 4 players so far today from 2024.

James Brown and Nojus Indrusaitis from St. Rita HS. I believe Nojus played on campus this past weekend.

And Luke Bamgboye and Donnie Freeman both from the DMV

James Brown and Indrusaitis both play AAU for Chicago Meanstreets, which Jerel Mcneal is pretty involved with.

Here are their rankings on 247:
#27 - James Brown - C - 6'9"
#25 - Donnie Freeman - PF - 6'8"
#63 - Luke Bamgboye - C - 6'10"
#50 - Nojus Indrusaitis - SG - 6'4"

Shaka Smart and Mike Anderson among those watching him.

This would be Alassane Amadou, if I'm not mistaken.

Marquette offered their first 2025 prospect. Joson Sanon. A 6'5" wing from Boston.

Did we never pursue Momcilovic?  He's a local, he plays a position we need help at, and he's well-rated. I saw his final six, and we aren't in it.

Of course I've never seen him play, or even much film. Just seems like a kid like that, from so close to home, should be kind of a priority.

Does anybody know if we made overtures, or why he doesn't seem inetersted in MU?

mileskishnish72

It's OK, Wades, I saw your thoughts in the other thread.

They did offer, but I'm not sure how hard they went. We are in on a number of 2023s and have just the one scholarship. I know there's the always be recruiting aspect, but if Milan is close to committing, I can understand that we might not be ready to take someone who doesn't fit exactly what the staff is looking for.
