Don't burn bridges.   He might want to transfer home one day.

Is this what we've become? Hoping to land other programs' washouts?

When Shaka got to Marquette, one of the first things he did was reach out to Seth Trimble and Leon Bond and make them priorities #1A and #1B in recruiting. Both chose to play for other coaches.
It's not the end of the world, and MU has no choice but to play the long game with Shaka, but he's definitely off to an inauspicious start on the recruiting trail.

Shaka has lost local recruits to UNC and Virginia. Hard pill to swallow but not the end of the world.

At least local aau programs let him talk to their guys unlike our last coach.

And Wojo went all out and got Ellenson and a big time recruiting class early on. How’d that work out?

So the lesson to be learned here is that we don't need quality recruits because it didn't work out well before?

This is clearly a set-back.  To prioritize two local recruits who end up going elsewhere can't be spun into a positive.

spot on. Lose two guys to ACC schools just not good. State of WI is producing some talent of late and it’s all goin’ yonder. Dang.

I’m not spinning it as a positive, but it’s not the indictment some are making it out to be.

He brought three Texas recruits with him to MU, two of which have zero ties to the area and school. Let’s not pretend all of a sudden he can’t recruit.

That is an accurate statement.  It's not the end of the world, but it's not a promising start.

Trimble felt like a longer shot than Bond.  They’ve made a lot of offers, so we’ll see what happens.

I’ve seen much more positives from his recruiting so far than negative. Extremely short memories from the plebes on this one.

No - there’s more to a successful program than winning recruiting battles in July. I won’t call him a failure for missing out on one guy when when he assembled what I believe to be will be a competitive team in two weeks time.

The downside of bringing in 9 guys with 4 years of eligibility remaining is that it will be perceived that you don't have a lot of playing time to offer.

It will be interesting to see how Shaka fills this first recruiting class. I think we will get a lot of swings and misses until he finds a way to balance the classes a little bit (or starts winning big).

I honestly expect a 2-3 man class at this point with 1-2 transfers (3 if someone leaves unexpectedly).

With over 1200+ players annually going to be in the portal each year. Recruiting doesn't matter if you can clean up in the portal.

Bond was a priority. Not signing him was a loss. Period. Some say you can’t “lose” recruiting battles because you can’t lose what you never had. You can only win them. If that’s true then all 361 D1 teams are winners every year simply by filling their scholarship table. Which is, of course, nonsense.

I think the word loss has more than one definition and you were using one definition while 82 was using the other definition.

Interesting take that goes well beyond the problem of being up against Bluebloods when we are recruiting. Marquette's prospects for at least this coming season, if not another season, makes for a tough sell in their own right. Add the question every recruit has to be asking himself- how much PT is available?- and the  recruiting part of our coach's job clearly becomes really tough.

I cannot imagine any coach bringing in 5 freshmen with the expectation (or desire) that they all stay with team. I think the only questions (regarding the freshmen) are how many transfer (1? 2?) and who transfers.

Edit: OK, Calipari and a few others would possibly bring in 5 one and done freshmen, but not the vast majority of coaches.

I was using the definition of “competing and not winning or tying” - IOW, losing.

Which definition of losing was Mike using?
