I know how Wojo can achieve greater recruiting success.  Win more.

If Dawson Garcia makes another official visit to MU I would assume he will select MU.It would be strange that an out of state player would unofficially visit before his Jr. year, officially visit during his Jr. year and officially visit during his Sr. year and not select that school. At least I hope so.

To be clear, and even said as much in my original post the spurred the conversation, I don’t think MU missing out on elite recruits means they can’t compete. You can build a great program getting 50-100 type kids and under the radar prospects. But let’s not forget that Wojo came from Duke and played for Duke, the place where recruiting elite talent sort of takes care of itself.

There certainly has to be some disappointment from Wojo on his inability to reel in the 5 star kids to this point. He’s swung (which he should and hope he continues to do), but missed consistently. All I was saying is at what point does he realize he’s just not going to be able to consistently recruit at that level at Marquette? Maybe that means he runs for the hills, or maybe it means he continues to build MU with good but not elite HS talent. Many ways to the skin the cat....some posters around here get so defensive at any hint of questioning. Sometimes the truth hurts, guys. Marquette is a great college basketball program. But it isn’t elite and has a decently long way to go to get there.

If Wojo is reasonable/logical, he will wait to judge his recruiting potential after consistently making/winning in the tournament. That's likely the last piece of the recruiting puzzle (currently available to him/MU, anyway).

There's a lot of talk that his dad likes IU. That said, I do think that we are in a good position right now.

And RJ Davis's dad supposedly liked MU too. I do think MU getting the last visit is a big deal though. Or at least i hope it is. I just want to land him so bad.

To put it into context MU has brought in one 5-star recruit in RSCI or 247Sports since 2000. That was Wojo bringing in Henry Ellenson. Buzz’s highest rated were Vander and Deonte. Crean’s was James and Jerel.

Davis wasn’t a five star recruit and as many pointed out not as high others so I  treat this like any other recruit.

You might think Wojo will burn out and I don’t think that is the case because they know the recruiting game. He will likely leave for more money and visibility before burning out.

Howard was a fringe 5 star for his class.

JJJ was higher than Deonte.

Other than that I agree.

Good luck to RJ. I doubt he sees much beyond garbage time against the Cupcakes at UNC. Maybe by Senior year he might get some visibility .

I think the kid and his family made a lousy decision but it’s theirs to make.

At Marquette he was set up to get playing time and have an offense that has been proven to seve small guards well.

You are correct on JJJ.

I didn’t count fringe as 5 star but if we say he was then Wojo would have 2 to every one else’s zero so it would actually refute the point of him burning out because he hasn’t been able to get 5 Stars.  That would be 2 in 2 years(or 3 if you count him in his original class).

Harry may have been from Australia, but he was at SMU when MU recruited him.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Outside of Howard being 25 and Ellanson being top 10 there actually hasn't been a massive bump in the recruiting. Should note that Joey was 18 when he committed before getting injured.

The thing I most got out of it was that Juan Anderson was more highly rated than Lazar, Jerel, Wes and Sam.

To me I got the most out of seeing how big of a flop that last Buzz class was. Even when you swap Burton for Fischer who was rated higher.

Here's another interesting tidbit: 3 of our last 4 players drafted weren't in the rsci top 200 (that's as far as the rsci goes).

Let’s see how it plays out. Think you are dead wrong about his PT over his career.

+1. Roy goes very deep into his roster and pushes the ball all game, giving a lot of guys a lot of minutes to keep everyone fresh. Roy doesn’t have burger boys up and down the roster. He has a couple on the roster and a whole lot of guys ranked similarly to RJ.

I’d expect RJ to get 15+ MPG in conference as a freshman and only go up the longer he’s there.

Agree with you and Wades on this. I think RJ will play decent minutes from the start and end up being a big time contributor at UNC.

I wish he'd have come here, but if he can't get more than garbage time against cupcakes, I'm glad he went elsewhere. I expect Marquette to compete for league titles in one of the toughest leagues in the country. That means having players that can play for teams that compete for league titles in the toughest leagues in the country.

Yes, UNC gets great talent, but let's not pretend Markus wouldn't be getting time there. He would've been a key piece all along there too. If RJ is good enough to be a major piece from the start here, he'll probably be a significant piece sooner rather than later in Chapel Hill too.

My comments are not about RJ's ability.

Under the old Carolina approach where Roy focused on four year kids, I would say yes RJ would get a lot of opportunity.  His ability is real and that is why Marquette, Georgetown and Pitt went ga ga over him.

Roy for competitive reasons, has embraced the one and done model. Look at who they are focusing on this year. He has also now embraced grad transfers with the success of Cam Johnson.

So the problem for RJ ( or any player of his rough ability level relative to the cant miss one and done types) is that every single year for the next 4 years he is going to have to compete for his job with a can't miss type recruit like a Cole Anthony. As it is RJ is coming into the class with Caleb Love, who can do everything RJ can do and is bigger and more athletic.

Finally consider the other guys on the UNC  roster already who are actually very solid players. Just becomes very hard to gain traction when you are  the 10th or 11th guy anywhere.
