Who'd we get instead of tilman? Cain, eke or Elliot right?

I'm thinking Morrow

Sure.  I tend to think MSU is a tad overrated, but they're definitely a top 10 team.
Yeah, I don't disagree. But my point is that some kids want to play for the big time programs and are ok with sitting on the bench and hoping to get their PT as an upperclassman.  Other kids want to get minutes and I understand both arguments.

Ike Eke, Theo John, and Jamal Cain all committed prior to Tillman's announcement. Rowsey, Heldt, Anim, Howard, and Hauser account for another five scholarships that were used. Then we planned to have Cohen, Cheatham, Duane Wilson, and Traci Carter, so another four that transferred out. We had one opening, but Cohen's early departure opened up pursuit of another player.

My guess is Harry Froling wouldn't be here if Tillman had committed, but it could've been Elliott. Here's the timeline from the Tillman to Morrow commits:

  • September 30, 2016: Xavier Tillman commits to MSU.
  • November 20, 2016: Sandy Cohen announces transfer from Marquette.
  • December 4, 2016: Greg Elliott getting interest from Marquette.
  • December 12, 2016: Harry Froling announces transfer from SMU.
  • December 14, 2016: Traci Carter announces transfer from Marquette.
  • January 2, 2017: Greg Elliott receives Marquette offer.
  • January 5, 2017: Harry Froling visit at Marquette announced.
  • January 9, 2017: Harry Froling visits Marquette.
  • January 10, 2017: Harry Froling commits to Marquette.
  • March 28, 2017: Duane Wilson announces transfer from Marquette.
  • April 4, 2017: Greg Elliott commits to Marquette.
  • May 3, 2017: Ed Morrow commits to Marquette.
I think the intent was always to fill those two scholarships with a guard and a big. When Tillman went to MSU, they turned attention to Froling. While they recruited Elliott at the same time, they had room for both him and Froling at the time. If Tillman comes, we wouldn't have had room for Froling but likely still would've offered Elliott, who we had been watching before Froling's transfer was announced.

Effectively, Froling took the Tillman scholarship and Elliott took the open scholarship. Because Carter and Wilson left, we still had two open scholarships. The first went to Morrow who was simply the best player available we could land and the second (just last week) went to Joey Hauser, who was only able to take that because Wilson left prior to the season. So in effect...

  • Xavier Tillman not committing became Harry Froling.
  • Greg Elliott took the Sandy Cohen scholarship.
  • Ed Morrow took the Traci Carter scholarship.
  • Joey Hauser took the Duane Wilson scholarship for his redshirt.
  • Haanif Cheatham's scholarship is still open which will allow pursuit of an additional 2018-19 player.

Watts and Jackson are also HS teammates.  I recall reading an article last year where Watts called Elliott and Cain his "big brothers."

Many of those sitting around me at the BC think Rowsey runs the Gandalf offense, "you shall not pass!"
