I work closely with a medical device manufacturer that's spending most of their time coming up with contingency plans for their contingency plans around the tariff nonsense. As you can imagine none of the plans involve moving manufacturing to the united states because that would be suicide as nobody would be able to afford their devices anymore. Especially with the pressure to cut costs in elder care, hospitals, etc by payors both federal and otherwise.

They've resigned themselves to moving most of their global manufacturing and assembly completely outside of the US unless the final product is destined for US use. They're a proud US company, but the political chaos in the US is too hard to plan around. 

I'm not surprised, but it's pretty sad. I'll make plenty of money, but a lot of good people will be laid off and the jobs likely moved to eastern europe.

I'm trying to figure out how many suppliers won't be able to 100% trace the steel they poured so the part applicable to it is subject to a 200% tariff based on the percentage makeup of steel used in said part.

Do they do their manufacturing and assembly in the same location/factory?  Or is it a multi-step process?  Obviously you know more about the details than I do but Ive been mildly surprised by some of the savings a few companies Ive known have seen by decoupling the two and transferring assembly to either the US or lower tariff spots in South America.  Its still more expensive than before from China but not as much as expected.

In fun attempted tariff skirting news, developing story in my world is that a bunch of major Indian diamond companies just got busted trying to circumvent tariffs through Mexico.  One of the largest jewellery manufacturers in the US has a Mexican subsidiary for goldsmithing and casting work.  Well that Meixcan company has a small division that deals in tiles.  So basically that company tried to import a bunch of diamonds, tens of thousands originally from India, in shipments of tiles and under the guise of tiles from Mexico, avoiding both the high India tariffs as well as the additional 10% tariff on diamonds.  Just mind-blowingly stupid and arrogant.

Yeah they manufacture in a couple of countries (and they're working to diversify their manufacturing base further to derisk) and final assembly is currently in the USA. Assembly is underselling how much work is completed here, but still it's not full blown manufacturing.

Managing timing customs duties it can help or if there is product fab and finishing that crosses back and forth across borders like auto manufacturing.(I assume you knew this)

The War On Christmas ...

Americans plan to spend 5% less this holiday season compared to last year — the first pullback since 2020, Axios' Kelly Tyko writes from PwC's 2025 Holiday Outlook out this morning.

Why it matters: Rising costs and tariff fears are hitting gift budgets, shifting dollars toward food and essentials. It's one of the first sizable surveys to flash a significant warning sign for the retail sector this coming season.

The big picture: The holidays will still happen — but with tighter wallets and more deliberate choices.

Retailers' pre-tariff inventory is nearly depleted. So what hits shelves next will have already been subject to tariffs that companies are starting to pass on to consumers.
