Not sure why my complimenting my wife's family merits a comment, but go at it, buddy.

Oops.

Not necessarily.  I know a fair amount of people from my parent's generation (non-typical Boomer mentality) who still regularly speak of the appeal of children vs a more "comfortable" financial lifestyle.  And not the "well my family had 27 kids back in the 60s", but having 3-4 versus 1 or 2.  Less vacations, less "nice" cars, etc...

I'm in that generation (76 next month, wife 73) and we absolutely chose a larger family (4 kids) over financial comfort in our youth or even middle age. 4 kids in slightly less than 6 years with a commitment to parochial education was very expensive. And my wife's commitment to raising them took her out of the workforce  for 20 years. It meant fewer new cars and nights out, and our vacations were infrequent and limited to road trips for all. But whatever we missed was paid back 100 fold by what they all gave us. I can't honestly say we had much of a plan but we figured things out along the way - and the experiences/memories have been priceless.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Your comment on my wife's family was weird. I have no idea on why you comment on most things. I was simply curious.

Lenny

I am looking forward to Fluff adding his thoughts on your journey with your family. It should be priceless. As for me, your description of raising a family sounds perfect to me. Our family has a lot of similarities, and it is still being paid back every day for me and my wife.

I'm certainly happy Lenny feels he got 100x out of his family.  And sorry that Goose feels that he and his family don't have enough money to make even more babies.

But that's largely irrelevant this thread.  Perhaps start another thread on the joys of family.

My MIL is 88y and she in my 2-3 favorite nonblood relative people of all time. I hope that we are sharing time with her for many more years. She is worldly, intelligent, well read and traveled and adds to any conversation she is part of and that is pretty damn cool. I will add, she is very tolerant, but don't think she would be a fan of Fluff.

Goose

Being a fan of Fluff would require unlimited tolerance and extremely poor judgment. Your MIL likely meets the first requirement but I'm sure the second isn't in her DNA.

I disagree Rocky. My largest investment (monetarily and otherwise) has been my family. And I'm OK with my ROI.

Well, we agree that children are one way to invest money.  I'm just suggesting not the intention of this thread, lol.

I can only assume your children are repaying your investment in them with interest. Otherwise it was a bad investment.

How one SPENDS his money is his own business. People who want to SPEND theirs on EVs, private jets or islands in the middle of nowhere because it brings them joy should by all means do it. But buying something because you think it's cool or fun doesn't make it a good INVESTMENT. And if it does the same thing as something else but depreciates 10x faster - by definition it's a poor investment.

??? WTF???
I guess your kids (assuming you have kids) depreciated quickly the minute you took them home. I'm sorry about that. Mine are still paying dividends. Lucky me.

Oh, Lenny.
As you may recall, not long ago (in a discussion of EVs) you scoffed at the idea that anything that doesn't bring financial rewards could be labeled an "investment," instead declaring that it was just "spending."
In fact, when I suggested that spending money on that which bring you joy is also an investment, you called me obtuse.

So, I just thought it was curious that you labeled your family an investment.

Anybody buy or sell any stock today?

I didn't. I put in limit orders on AMZN, GOOGL and a few others, but none hit. Tomorrow's another day!

Because I think you are painfully out of touch. And if your family believes the same as you, so are they.

It appears that Monday's sell-off was a one day reaction to the first poor jobs report in two years.    Every now and then, those days happen.   Onward and upward.

Proving you're not out of touch by completely missing my point is hilarious.

And anyways, if Lenny's, rocket, 4ever and now Muggs are posting support for your point, I have never been more sure of my accuracy.
