Does that mean he's on the team for '21-22?  Excuse my ignorance.

Yes.  He can sign the offer and it is the equivalent of a one year deal and would be an unrestricted FA in 22-23.  Or he can get a better offer on the market which has to be at least two years.  If he signs that offer sheet, the Nuggets have an opportunity to match or let him go.

His Final 4 run was a fluke a decade ago.  He inherited a good program at VCU.  To his credit, he made it better.  He was fine at Texas but he didn't elevate the program.  It's possible, maybe likely, there is a low ceiling at Texas but he didn't near it.  The further we get from his hire, the lore I think Marquette would have been better served hiring a hungry up and comer but I don't begrudge them for hiring him.  It made-makes sense.  He's an upgrade over Wojo but I don't think it's as big as many think

Thanks. I knew about that VCU's program prior to Shaka was solid because I lived in Richmond at the time but he really got the students and entire city pumped up about the team and I think some of that resulted in the them exceeding their own expectations. God knows we could use some of that at Marquette.

Fair questions regarding his tenure at Texas. I wanted Moser because I thought we needed a lifer who would eventually develop in Marquette whatever the hell it was that he had at Loyola.

I'm a little skeptical about Shaka but not to the degree you are. I appreciate the reality check.

Fantastic news for Markus and MU. Having Markus in the league for at least another year is a good thing.

The program needed an enthusiasm infusion.  The Wojo era had sapped all that out and another year, even if successful, wouldn't have mattered.  Shaka gives an enthusiasm injection and that is important in my opinion.  He still can do a lot do good things and deserves a long leash.

He's not guaranteed to be in the league. According to this site:https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/08/2021-nba-qualifying-offer-recap.html

Players on two-way contracts:
Note: Qualifying offers for two-way players are one-year, two-way contracts with a $50K guarantee unless otherwise indicated.

Keita Bates-Diop, Spurs
Jarrell Brantley, Jazz
Note: Brantley's qualifying offer is a one-year, minimum-salary contract with a partial guarantee equivalent to a two-way salary.
Armoni Brooks, Rockets
Amir Coffey, Clippers
Devon Dotson, Bulls
Trent Forrest, Jazz
Josh Hall, Thunder
Nate Hinton, Mavericks
Markus Howard, Nuggets

Thank you.  I didn't realize there was a different rule for two-way players.

Markus will do well in the Summer League. Nuggets drafted a larger shooting guard in the first round, however, I think Markus will find a home with the Nuggets on one of the two way positions.

Markus already has a half million dollar head start on Sam and ended up with the same amount of NCAA Tournament wins as Sam, even though Markus lost out on his last chance to win a Tournament game while Sam joined the reigning national champion and couldn't get one.  Sad.
