Hot dogs. Sandwiches or not?

Obviously no.

Die Hard.  Is it a Christmas movie?

Obviously yes.

Obviously no.

Follow up, is a sloppy joe a sandwich? What about a French Dip?

Why wouldn't they be?

Why wouldn't they be?

Because sandwiches are meats, cheeses or other fillings between two slices of bread...while sloppy joes typically use buns.

Tacos are sandwiches...

I'm trying to figure out the rules. Hot dogs are meat between two pieces of bread. Sloppy joes and french dips are also meat between two pieces of bread. Why would a hot dog not be a sandwich but a sloppy joe and french dip would be?

An interesting statement. Are they? Meat, cheese, and lettuce with a floor/ceiling of grain.

What about open faced sandwiches?

Ice cream sandwiches?

Wraps?

Gyros?

What is a sandwich?

Sausages for me are their own class. So hot dogs, brats, etc are all no votes. Part of that is shape, but also because the bun should stay intact as one connected piece.

Sandwiches can be on buns. I'd put the Sloppy Joe in as a sandwich. French Dip too. Taco not so much because it's one shell. A quesadilla is closer to a sandwich than a taco.

That said, I don't think it's as simple as having hard and fast rules. That would lead to a slice of summer sausage and cheddar between two Ritz being labeled a sandwich, and that's just a cheese and sausage tray.

Also, ice cream sandwiches are not sandwiches. They are ice cream sandwiches. They cannot be accurately identified without the "ice cream" label. Just because the phrase "sandwich" is part of their moniker doesn't allow them to stand alone as a sandwich.

The Earl of Sandwich tells me a hot dog does not count. He feels the same way about a taco.

A tamale is a tamale.

Pretty profound, eh?
