When did the Gym move to the Ardmore Bar location?

I know nobody updates it anymore, but this kind of historical information is on the wiki:

Holy cow!  Crazy that 1) A BMW Z4 drives up / by unscathed, and maybe not crazy that 2) all 3 cars you see are BMWs...

And a 17 year old was driving the car spinning out.

No.  It's this.

My brother in law owned The Gym Bar. He opened it around '72 and sold to the Frenn's of Marquette Liquor around '90. The Frenn's ultimately sold it to MU. On a sidebar, saw Richie Frenn at an MU game in the last couple of years and it put a smile on my face.

Was Bingo at the Gym in1972?

Bingo was there from day one. I was nine years old and he was measuring stick on growing taller. Beat him by a bit, but not much.

Dr. B

Yes, Bingo's on Center and later on he was on Vilet.

And it's now O'Briens.

Today begins the Lake Express Ferry's 20th year.

Round trip ticket for a family of 4, plus car .. $1,150.

That's a hell of a lot of money to avoid going through Chicago.  Not to mention, it barely saves any time.

I remember taking it about 10 years ago .. I think the price was $600 then.

Seriously?  $1,150?  Holy crap.  I always assumed it would be more expensive than it was worth but that is approaching military vendor pricing levels.

Family of 4 (assuming 2 kids) round trip with car- $773

It shaves about 2 hours each way, assuming no traffic through Chicago.

I am assuming people do it for the views, not for the time. -Wondering if you sat in the car the whole way if you would have to buy a cabin.

I took it one time shortly after it opened.  Chose to rent a car in Milwaukee.  Pleasant trip.   High waves caved in a door on the hull.  Instead of a return trip by boat, they chartered a bus to bring us back to Muskegon.

I prefer the tollway.

I almost took it once for my brother's wedding years ago, but then instead entered the distance and figured out that the time from Michigan to Wisconsin was very similar... and I just drove instead.

Makes me happy I don't live in Libertyville.

Will be spending the summer in Lincoln Park, away from the Kennedy and the Edens. For the two weeks I'm in Libertyville, HELLO METRA!!!!

You are missing the $90 fuel surcharge and $90 Port & Security Fee.

2 adults, 2 kids (under 12) + car = $962
2 adults, 2 kids (over 12) + car = $1,150

I just don't see it.  It's a 2.5 hour trip, and let's add .5 for boarding/disembark, so 3 hours. Driving, no traffic is 4.5, so you're saving 1.5 hours x 2 = 3 hours RT.

275 miles X 2 = 550 miles / 25 mpg = 22 gallons of gas X $3.80 = $84 in gas.

So ferry (1150) - $84 gas - $16 tolls = $1050 to save 3 hours RT.

So .. if you value your time at $350/hr, then you break even.

Now .. the SS Badger is a different thing.  It's cheaper, and almost 2x slower.  But .. it's a "voyage" .. it's a "journey."  There's some entertainment value, with a museum, gift shop, TV room, game room, Bingo games, etc.   The Lake Express .. is transportation from A to B, in comparison.

4 adults, 1 car RT on the SS Badger is $787.

The Sultan

So it seems like the Lake Express is geared more to business travelers, likely traveling solo. The price can be justified that way.
