Do a google search for "durian."

Here's a little preview: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-is-durian_n_7111232

Here's a little preview: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-is-durian_n_7111232

When I was recently in Singapore and Malaysia, durian covered chocolates and other flavored items were all over the airport gift shops and in the supermarket.
My Malaysian co-worker told me it's not a flavor that Westerners like but they love in Malaysia.

Near the trip end while in In Singapore I figured I had to bring home something home with it that would not smell, so I bought durian chips.  Made like potato chips, they were good and tasted saltier than anything.

The creepiness of modern technology....

Today we got a letter from a mortgage company we've never dealt with, trying to get us to refinance. On the front (and peeking through the envelope window) was an aerial picture of our house.

Now I get that you can see an aerial view of most any house on earth by typing address into Google Earth...but still, this solicitation with our house's picture gave a creepy "we know where you live" sort of feeling. Like if you opened the mail to find pics of yourself walking out of the grocery store or coffee shop.

IMHO, sometimes less is better when it comes to technology...

We just refinanced a month ago or so.  Just worked out that our mortgage was a round number. $X50,000.  Somehow, all of the direct mail life insurance offers that you get after the loan is processed are sending me solicitations for $X5,000.  Really hoping that the lender makes the same mistake....

We need to talk about grocery store delis.

Horribly inefficient, and then the human contact is so unnecessary.

How has this industry not been automated? We're talking about processed slabs of meat being cut to proper thicknesses and then charged out by the weight.

Patty from Lake Villa has been in the deli for a long time, but still needs two trips to the scale to get close to a pound of black pepper turkey.

Arby's already had the autoslicer. Now we need to incorporate a scale and a meat picker.

Customer can select meat, quantity by weight or slice and then the meat thickness on a 0-10 scale. 0 being shaved and 10 being 3/4" thick. People that get a pound of shaved ham can sit on it.

Whole process from ordering, asking if the thickness is good, getting the correct quantity is all streamlined. Deli lines would plummet in wait times. Also, way healthier.

Have you ever asked for a slice to taste that wasn't for a young kid? If you answered yes, die.

I asked the deli guy WTF this new "aloha chicken" was and he offered me a taste.  I'm glad he did, because it was pretty bad.

I've never asked for a taste, but if they offer it, I'm in.

20+ years ago, deli meats in many stores were pre-sliced in the deli case.  The deli workers just had to grab a part of the stack and weigh it.  Most workers developed experience to pretty accurately estimate the number of slices needed for a given amount ordered.  When a particular stack got low, they would slice a bunch more.  There was no wasted time unwrapping and rewrapping each block of meat for each purchase.

I can only think of two potential reasons they no longer do that...excessive wastage or a better customer experience to see it actually sliced.  I guess sliced deli meat could also spoil faster, but if so, that would also occur in the fridge after purchase.

I've never thought this was an issue, but then again I've never been so desperate to get out of the grocery store 40 seconds faster that I dwelled on it to this extent. The people are almost always friendly. The deli does not enrage me.

I'd say 50% of my grocery trips, the deli enrages me.

It's a quiet rage, like when you find out your bag of Arby's only has one Horsey Sauce in it, though.

Agreed.  And Wonderful salt and pepper pistachios.  Top shelf.

The Sultan

What is significantly more enraging is when stores make you buy your alcohol in the alcohol section and not at the front with the rest of your haul.

And of course then people do the reverse thing and bring in their groceries to check out in the alcohol section.  And in general that's fine because people have the common sense to bring one or two items.  But then you get stuck behind the guy who has like ten things and no one wants to say anything because he just looks like a guy who'll run over you with his car in the parking lot.
