If we get Grimes he sounds like he's 1 and done, don't get too attached.

I won't believe Grimes is 1-and-done until wades says, "He gowne!"

It's like the fat lady singing, except wades is no lady and I have no idea if he is fat, skinny or just right!

As for being "crushed" ... I won't be even a little, tiny, wee bit crushed. I hope he goes to Marquette. I have never had any reason to expect him to go to Marquette. I'm high on our program, either way.

Don't have any idea on this one, but Hank was gowne after a year the day he signed the dotted line to come to Marquette.

You very well may be the first person ever to call me fat if you were going to do so.

ESPN's lottery predictions for 2019.

Semi-meaningless.

I take is as more meaningful if it was a Chad Forde prediction, but I'm not familiar with Jonathon Givony.

I'll be disappointed but in no way will I be crushed. I think that's silly. I'm looking at it as if we're playing with house money at this point.

"Playing with house money" implies that we've already won something. What? Marquette is playing with their own money here, and right now we have hundreds of thousands in the pot. Win and it's a game changer, we're maybe a top 10 team next year. Lose and we're still well behind where we were 5 or 6 years ago. This is a big deal.

Givony runs Draft Express and is pretty well respected. Maybe moreso than Ford.

Not true. If they don't have a 2 and a grad transfer is looking, Marquette will be high on list. They have a great track record and Howard, Hausers, Froling and the others will be a very good team.

As for that article about playing along top talent in practice every day, I don't buy it. Go to Kentucky and there's a long list of 5 star kids that haven't gotten it done. Benches get short in conference/tourney play.Cal has played 6/7 guys a lot of years, with ten 5 star kids on the roster. If he goes to MU he's pretty much guaranteed 28 minutes on a top 25 team.

Givony has a far better track record than Forde (sic) (depending on which Ford version - edits three years later are better than predraft), but I'd be careful with that.

I understand what you were saying, but firmly disagree with the bolded. Even without Grimes I think we have a top 25 possibly top 15 team in 18-19.

Next year, MU will have 10 kids back, add Morrow who I thought was one of the best players on Nebraska's team.  I remember watching him and hearing he was from
Simeon, same school as Jabari, wondering why he went to Nebraska, a non traditional basketball school, and why did MU not recruit him?  Parents, understand.  Now
add Joey and maybe Bailey.  Grimes is icing on the cake, MU will be fine with or without him.

tower912

I want Grimes, (A) because he is a stud and could take MU very far, but primarily (B) I look at the 18-19 roster and see a roster that is heavy on bigs and woefully short of guards.     Unless Elliot is the answer at 1 and Cain can be an effective 2.

Yep, and the guard shortage is 100% the reason why coaches are in contact again with Ramey (PG).

I hope QG comes so your prediction/point becomes moot, but if we're top 15 without him, imagine the possibilities with a 5* at college basketball's most important position!

As TAMU said, I couldn't disagree more with the bolded.  The influx of talent Marquette has seen in the last 2 years has been really impressive and I think with the commitment of Joey we're now right around that Sweet Sixteen range when he, Bailey, Froling, Morrow all hit the court: our ceiling with Jae, DJO, Jimmy.  Throw in a Grimes, Ramey, or Simons and we are comfortably ahead of 5-6 years ago, IMO.

DCHoopster

Once Grimes see the new arena he will be playing in, in an NBA city, that might be the deciding factor.  Plus I am sure MU is taking him to the Cavs game to see the
atmosphere of the city which will be extremely high for that game.  Having a solid roster is good as well.  Does he want to be the missing piece or just one on the other
5 star recruits at those schools?  I will say this,  at MU he will not be the only good player on the roster,  will not be the star with Howard and Hauser, plus Morrow.
One and done showcase like Henry will not be the case.  Kentucky will be loaded as usual, and I am sure Kansas will be as well.

Strongly disagree with this.  We are in a great position moving forward and can have a very, very good team in 2018-19 even if Grimes chooses to go elsewhere.

I very much hope you're right when you opine that we'll be a S16/E8 caliber team in 2018/19 without adding a PG (let alone an elite one). We'll agree to disagree on that one.

But I'm still puzzled how anyone can say we're "playing with house money" in QG's recruitment. We've gone "all in" in a game of no limit, winner take all hold 'em. If we win, we win big. But if we lose, it was our money in the pot, not the houses's.

Which player (or other recruit that is knocking on Wojo's door asking him to please take him into the program) are we putting into the middle of the table, putting us at risk of losing, in the hopes of leaving the casino with Grimes in our wallet?

We seem to be clearly on the incline, but let's make the tournament in consecutive seasons before we start saying we're back to where we were several years ago.  Potential is there, but we are still young and have not proven anything.

I think the way people are looking at it is that we already won "house money" by landing Joey,  Morrow,  and Bailey for next season.  We have a very good team that I think most fans will be thrilled with even if we miss on Grimes.

I honestly think this is a vocab issue. People have different definitions of what "playing with house money", "crushed", and "biggie" means. I think everyone mostly agrees on how important Grimes' recruitment is.

We had everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose going after Grimes.

Did we "lose" some money from our recruiting budget? I suppose, but that doesn't appear to be a problem at Marquette. So otherwise, what did we have to lose?

Those who play poker know this really isn't an all-in bet. In poker, if you go all-in and get beaten by an opponent, you have lost everything. I like to think even the most pessimistic Scooper out there won't think all is lost if we don't get Grimes.

It was more of a full-court press than an all-in bet. And sometimes - often, in fact, even for the best teams - a full-court press doesn't succeed. Quite often, teams win even when their full-court press gets broken several times.

It was worth the full-court press effort on Grimes. I hope it pays off.

As an aside, although I'm too lazy to go back and check, I seem to recall these exact same kind of posts - some with almost the exact same wording - regarding our recruitment of Joey just a few months back.

We HAD to get Joey if we were going to be elite again. Now, I guess, we HAVE to get Grimes so we can be what? Secret-double-elite?

I want Grimes to choose Marquette. I love it when our team is great as much as every other person on this board. The day he makes his announcement, if he chooses us, I'll say, "Great!" And I'll text a few people the great news. If he chooses one of the other schools, I will be disappointed for a second. And then I'll move on. I will say, "Hey, it was worth a shot. Now go try to get the next guy, Wojo!"

I will not be "crushed," not even close. I was crushed when I found out my dad had cancer. This is just basketball, not real life.

See it exactly the same way.  We're what, 75 days out from Joey's commitment?  That was a real biggie and a very important 'get' for Wojo.  We had already correctly indicated that the 2018 class was a complete success the moment that happened.  Sure I want Grimes.  But some here are never happy.  We're in a great spot going forward.
