For what its worth, sounds like we've moved on from Roberts to focus on the other forwards.  Pretty underwhelming AAU stats this spring as well.

This is the second time I've heard MU may have moved on from Roberts.  Hopefully that means MU is well positioned with the other targets.

Big East class rankings by 247
1. Nova 19th
2 Xavier 28th
3. Georgetown 32nd
4. St. John's 33rd
5. Uconn 34th
6. Creighton 39th

Ben Gold is not rated, so how good he is may make a huge difference.

Overall, I am not impressed with the freshmen talent coming into the Big East.

What is this ranking? Seems off from both the internal and composite rankings on 247. Was this a different site?

Under the radar guys.  I like it!  We'll sneak up on a lot of people with our lack of talent!

I clicked on the link posted by Herman Cain about Chase Ross, which took me to the 247 site. I clicked on team recruiting rankings, which is where I got this from.

Got it looks like its some kind of combination of transfers and freshmen incoming list. Makes sense why MU is so low, no one knows how to factor in Gold or Wrightsil.

Marquette is 34th overall and second in the conference on the internal freshman rankings, which is why i was confused.

Knight Commission

I am pretty sure the son of Marquette legend, Anthony Candelino just committed to Wisconsin.

Preferred walk on.

Hopefully he will be as good as his father.

The rankings only include incoming freshmen, so Wrightsil does not count. Same goes for other Big East schools' incoming transfers.

The one rankings list you looked at does look at transfers. https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Basketball/OverallTeamRankings/ .
Arkansas has the #2 class with 10 commits including Jalen Graham, Trevon Brazile, and the 2  Mitchell brothers.
Alabama at #3 includes Mark Sears.
Uconn at #34 only has one incomming freshman, but they also have 4 commits listed. 3 transfers.

The Overall Basketball Team Rankings includes transfers.

There are two freshman ranking lists that 247 has as well. Here are the big east teams rankings in those.

Let's call the 2022 class for what it is, adequate. Jones, Ross and Gold all have some potential, but there's no reason to believe they're immediate program changers.

He clearly whiffed on bigger names. Seth Trimble, Leon Bond and Tre Holloman immediately come to mind.

The argument right now is that Shaka might be taking slightly lower caliber players in an effort to build a foundation for the all-important program culture.

At some point though, Shaka will likely need to recruit higher caliber players to reach expectations. He effectively gets a pass for this first class, primarily due to acclimation, but it's going to need to improve. I don't think you consistently compete for Big East titles with a roster full of guys of the 22 class's caliber.

Right now, I'll call the quality of the 2022 class "unknown."

It might prove to have been poor, might prove to have been outstanding, or might prove to have been anywhere in between - including "adequate."

We'll see!

But I agree with your overarching point that Shaka needs to consistently bring in high-level talent if he's to take the program where we all want it to go. Even then, of course, there's no guarantee. His time at Texas exemplified that.

This sounds like an excuse to defend poor recruiting.

Folks see what they want to see in ratings. We need to get better, and I have confidence in Shaka that we will.

Honest question; are the rankings outside the top 40 or so still screwed up from COVID?  I know with the lack of sufficient time to properly evaluate players, things were considerably less accurate for a while (James Graham comes to mind).  Is it more-or-less back to pre-pandemic levels of evaluation?

The ubber pro shaka rebuttle is, 1. he never stood a chance with Trimble, his half brother JP Tokoto went to UNC. 2. He didn't really stand a chance with Halloway either, I heard MSU was in front since his sophomore year. 3. He lost a 50/50 battle over a top 60 in state kid having a job for 2-3 months in Bond.

It seemed like Sean Jones was the number 1 priority once Coach Haynes got a little more comfortable with his new position (he was the last assistant hired because he came from Maryland.). Picked him over Desmound Claude. The only other guard they mildly looked at was Rowan Brumbaugh who ended up with Texas.

Chase Ross seemed like their SG/wing of choice. Only other two that MU seriously looked at were Ryan dunn and Christian Watson. Ross did decide before Watson. Dunn never visited MU. Committed right before Ross, but the recruitment tapered off from MU a little before that.

Ben Gold, coming from New Zealand, clearly had a different timeline than any other recruit MU looked at, so i have no clue what Marquette's forward priority was. Shaka looked at him in January 2021 so he's been on the radar since then. And he is a top 2 player out of his academy class. Could really be anything as a 6'11" guy who mainly plays the 4 and had one of his best games at the G league showcase playing out of position as a 3. They were slightly interested in Malik Dia, who opted to stay home in Nashville and they were slightly more interested in AJ Casey who opted to go to Miami. But i don't know if Gold still wouldn't be recruited even if one of those two were also coming to MU.

The 2022 kids are still questionable. They didn't have a 2020 AAU season and 2021 was limited in terms of access. Even their junior and senior year high school seasons were often cut short (I believe Chase Ross only played 4 games as a junior). There will likely be a number of recruiting misevaluations for 2022 kids, fewer (but still some) for 2023 kids, and we should be pretty much back to normal for 2024 and beyond.

Goose

I have no idea if the incoming kids can play a lick or not, but Shaka has pretty lengthy resume of recruiting basketball players. I do not think many experts would question his ability to recruit or identify talent and I am going with that until I see them play. I liked all of the guys he brought in last year and if similar type talent he has built a strong foundation. I do not think I have blind trust on this topic, and only going off his success rate as a recruiter.

Was Jones a Haynes recruit or did Shaka visit the Gahanna Lincoln well for the 3rd time as a head coach with the same Lincoln head coach?  I'm asking the question.

Can marquette have a recruit that isn't a shaka recruit? If you are crediting an AC its Haynes. If you arn't its shaka or Haynes. That was the timeline though.

I guess it depends on what you think fine is. Is it being competitive in Big East or is it being competitive in NCAA tournament?
