It might.  This is from back in February, and he names a lot of programs recruiting him hard.  Marquette is not mentioned.

https://www.on3.com/news/gus-yalden-2023-four-star-talks-official-visits-and-who-is-recruiting-hardest/

What I was was saying might not apply to Yalden was the "getting beat out by College of Charleston" part. It seems more likely he's heading to Wisconsin.

Gotcha.  I think he really fits well at Wisconsin too.

You do know that Buzz and Shaka run different systems right?

You do know that people raised the same question about Gardner's fit with Buzz's system that you did about Yalden's with Shaka's, right?

What system did Buzz run?

Does it matter?

All I was trying to point out was that when Davante Gardner surfaced as a recruiting target of Buzz, people raised the same questions about his fit, and Gardner managed to turn out okay.

It is a loss, if we do not sign a better player.
Okay i guess we'll revisit this in 2026ish.

Davante was also part of a 5 man recruiting class when we could afford to take a flier on a player that didn't necessarily "fit the system".  As of right now, we have zero openings in 2023 (will obviously change).  Finding a diamond in the rough once does not mean that every player of similar build will produce the same results.

And if it hadn't, we still had the staring center from Davante's time here.

Yes  because Buzz didn't have a system, he changed his approach every year to match his roster.

My recollection is that people didn't like Davante because he was an overweight low three star. If there were people worried about Buzz system,  they were being silly.

Yalden would work in Shakas system btw

When people get hung up on certain types players fitting into Shaka's system, it's good to remind them that this guy started 70 games over two seasons in Shaka's system.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

I don't know a ton about Yalden's game, but had not heard Marquette linked with him for a long time.   Not someone the coaching staff recruited heavily, for whatever reason.

Random, 247 updated their internal rankings, chase Ross shot up 50 spots to 121. Jones didn't really change moved two down.

Yes  because Buzz didn't have a system, he changed his approach every year to match his roster.

Except how would you have known this only two years into Buzz's tenure?  He only had two seasons under his belt and described his system or approach as being reliant on highly athletic switchable and reliance on paint touches and that that entails (Boot Camp, weight training, etc.).

The "he changed his approach every year" claim could be made only with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight after Buzz landed Gardner. You wouldn't have known that at the time.

Second, you're nitpicking over the difference between "system" and "approach." Sub in "approach" in place of "system" in my post, and the comparison is still valid.

And being overweight meant what?  It was that people didn't see him fitting in with Buzz's system (or approach, if you prefer) of relying on athletic switchables that dominated MU during Buzz's first two seasons.

You would have known it because Buzz took radically different approaches in year 1 and year 2 so if he had a system, we didn't know it yet. I don't know what "approach" means when it comes to basketball.

Being overweight meant people assumed that it didn't matter what system he was playing for, he wouldn't be a good basketball player.

Sure, Pak, but did he fit Shaka's culture?

Buzz spoke of this often...in year one.  Not the roster he would prefer, so they have to play a specific style of ball.

Its only a lose if you continue recruiting. Sorry i don't think the recruit Shaka offered when he was on a visit scheduled by the old staff should count as a recruiting lose. Pretty sure Cam Moratta was on staff when that happened.

Shaka lost Leon Bond to Virgina. We'll probably lose Milan to a big time program. There is a chance we lose Roberts to Indiana. If Norman or ames both chose schools other than marquette than we will probably lose at least one of those recruiting battles.

This is not one of them.

If Milan goes elsewhere, I'm not going to say Marquette lost him.  With possibly only 1 scholarship to give yet in the 2023 class and with the number of players they are recruiting hard, Milan is just one of out of a few getting looks from Marquette, plus Shaka signed Ben Gold who has some similar attributes.

Probably. Were recruiting at least 2 more freshman. 1 guard, 1 PF.

For what its worth, sounds like we've moved on from Roberts to focus on the other forwards.  Pretty underwhelming AAU stats this spring as well.
