I think he gets your point and you get his.  He is stating that they will be toiling in anonymity and I think you are saying who cares as long as the athletes are doing what they want and how they want to do it.

There is nothing complicated by either argument.  Just people entrenched in their positions.  Both are right in their own way.

Sure, but one point is rooted in selfishness and mean spiritedness. The other is not.

Not to mention that his example in this case was a kid who's ranked #2 in the nation and is considered a surefire lottery pick. He won't be toiling in anonymity.

I hear you TAMU.  I guess it's what you think toiling in anonymity means.  If he could go straight to the NBA now he would not be toiling in anonymity.  If he goes to the g-league elite team or Europe or Australia before the NBA he will be.  If he wants to market himself to rabid basketball fans then he gets more bang for his buck at an an elite college basketball program.  If he wants to  work on his game behind the scenes he goes pro early.  That is still the reality.  It's changing and in 10-20 years when the g-league gets a greater following he will become progressively more wrong and you will become progressively more right.  But until then he has a point.

Does Shaka offering a scholarship to every kid he sees?  Wow

Its DJOver

So of the new offers, who are the real targets? Of course, every top 25 kid from the Midwest is gonna have an offer, but what are the names I should be paying attention to?

Actually, no.  In college, he'd make no money and have a significant portion of his schedule taken up by classes.  In the G-League or overseas, he'd get paid and would be able to work on his game 24/7.

Having notoriety or the adoration of a particular fanbase just isn't worth that much to these elite athletes when their real goal is to get drafted as high as possible.

This is a circular argument but that one year in college at say Duke might get an athletie a $100 million dollar endorsement after marketing himself for one year rather than a smaller rookie endorsement contract because he has not been seen by anyone except the most rabid NBA draft junkies.  That has value.

I understand the advantage of playing 24/7 to work on your game in anonymity.  I also get his point of having fun in Bulgaria.  There are good points both ways.  People are too entrenched on their side of the argument to see both sides have advantages.

The Sultan

One of the criticisms of Wojo was that he was too targeted in his approach to recruiting, so when he missed out on a top target, he didn't seem to have a back up plan and we would end up with a roster short of bodies.
