Unsurprising. He basically stated it was his dream school

So Shaka's losing local kids to out-of-state schools already?
Green weenie, blah blah, blah.

So with Jose in the portal and gone, and Dawson still in limbo we currently have 2 openings, correct?  1 if Dawson comes back.  Ya?

Yes.  The scholarship table link spells this all out in detail.

Need to find a veteran point guard to mentor Mitchel.  Regardless of the Garcia outcome MU needs a proven point guard to tie it all together.  Looking for a major conference senior transfer.  Any sugestions?

Nope. That is one of the main jobs DeAndre Haynes, who worked with Zavier Simpson and Anthony Cowan to get them to the level they were at, specializes in. He is there to work with guards. I don't expect a proven PG on this team. We will likely end up with a lot of 3-guard sets and have Mitchell, Ellis, Kolek, Jones, Elliott, and another transfer guard sharing the ballhandling and creation duties. If you're hoping for a Marcus Carr or Sahvir Wheeler to suddenly put us over the top, you'll likely be disappointed. I really think the roster is mostly set and the most likely decisions to be made are from people already associated with MU. Maybe they'll surprise me, but I wouldn't count on it.

Gonzaga with three 5 star commitments for 2021-22.  Unbelievable.  MU needs to get back to being a MAJOR player and destination for the best hs ballers.

BCHoopster

How do you see that happening?  It will take awhile for Shaka to recruit at that level, not sure he can recruit kids to MU like Texas, next year recruiting cycle will give you an indication if he can recruit a Top 5 kid to MU.  To do that, he has to win.  Can he get MU to the tournament, maybe, maybe not.  Stay tune.

If we're in the conversation for a couple top 5 kids, I'll join the bandwagon Goose is on.  8-)

Next year?  You realize that Gonzaga has taken decades to get to this level.  Shaka will have to win, stick around Marquette, and win some more, before they are going to be consistently a player for top 10 talent.

Here was Gonzaga's roster in Mark Few's first year as Zags coach:

Kenny Williams   FR   G   5-9      1.0 Pts, 0.4 Reb, 0.3 Ast
Matt Kincaid   FR   G         0.7 Pts, 0.7 Reb, 0.4 Ast

How many of them were 5-stars?

And Few inherited a team that went 28-7 under Dan Monson, losing in the regional final to eventual champion UConn.

Shaka needs to keep getting "his kind of players." He needs to win. Then he'll have a better shot at the big fish.

We'll see if he can reel them in. I'm optimistic that he'll land a few of them for our alma mater.

Five stars don't necessarily mean winning. Five stars can mean poor team chemistry with "one and dones" and kids trying to build highlight tapes to play in Europe.

They don't.  To win championships, however, you need NBA talent

Agree with both of you. I was simply saying that I am optimistic that Shaka can successfully recruit 5-stars if he wants to do so and if we win.

You either need to recruit NBA talent and figure out a way to get young stars to form a cohesive unit so you can win right away before they fly the coup; or you need to recruit 4-stars (and others) with potential, coach them up, and turn them into NBA stars. Or a combination of both.

IIRC, Virginia won a couple years back with nary a 5-star, and I'm not sure how many of Baylor's players were 5-stars.

MU will be so young next year that if the kids stay for 3-4 years, they might be like that.  After this year, Shaka will need to recruit some bigs to replace Kurth and
Dawson, assuming he comesback,  but will be OK even if Dawson leaves, but will need center.  Hope he finds one.  Might need a point as well, but he will have to
decide after watching the kids play in summer.  Bond will just bring a very athletic player into the fold.  It seems Trimble has other plans.
