The one that always bothered me was how poorly the DJ Newbill situation was handled. Cut at the last second & strung along: https://www.inquirer.com/philly/hp/sports/20100701_Newbill_cut_loose_by_Marquette.html

Newbill went on to be an absolute beast. That late in game he jumped on Southern Miss offer and made all freshman team in Conference USA
FR: 9 & 6
Then transferred closer to home Penn State:
Soph: 16, 5 & 4
JR: 18, 5 & 2
SR: 21, 5 & 3

Conference USA All-Freshman Team (2011)
Honorable mention All-Big Ten (2013)
2× Second-team All-Big Ten (2014, 2015)
This is what I do not want to go back to. Right now we have 3 open scholarships. Wojo needs to pass on Mane, if he fills the three scholarships before Mane decides.

Buzz was off with a lot of guys.  Especially from high school.  His biggest recruiting misses were usually overly athletic players who peaked early.  Smith, Jones, Ferguson, etc.

Man what a miss that was. Top 100 recruit who not only underperformed at MU, transferred to a low major program at NC Central and scored 160 pts...TOTAL in 2 years, rough. Not Kevin Menard bad, but on the Mt Rushmore of underperforming recruits of the last 25 years.

My recollection was he wasn't even top 100 by the time he arrived on campus.

unrelated, but since we are going down memory lane; can somebody help my brain remember the 2008 class commits we lost after Crean bolted for Indiana? I only remember Tayshawn Taylor - and often think of him on those 2010/2011 & 2011/2012 teams - would have been special

Also Nick Williams, a guard who went to IU and transferred to Ole Miss.  Buzz didn't try to keep him.

Absolutely NOT...dumbest idea ever. If you fill the 3 scholarships and Mane wants to come..you take him. Period. You'd be an absolute damn fool as a Coach to turn down that kind of talent. You get the most talented players you can, and figure it out.

Nobody is filling 3 scholarships plus Mane this spring.

If we filled 2, and Mane still wanted to come, I'd eat my hat.

Christopherson could hardly dribble effectively at the high major level with his left hand as a freshman at MU.

Goes to show how much a kid can improve over time.  Went on to be a good player at Iowa State.  Worked out just fine for both parties.  Hard to argue with Buzz's success at MU.

If I remember right, Christopherson had a minor knee surgery before his freshman year, and missed some of the non-conference. He made a big shot against Cincy that year. He wasn't the quickest, but had a great shot. Adding him to the Midget team would have been fun with their ball movement and shooting.

? The scenario of a potentially desperate coach passing on a one and done, top 40 recruit would never happen. I understand you would like for MU to take the high road....but if f Mane can help the team win next year....he would be welcome with open arms.

Article in SI on Mane...

https://www.si.com/nba/raptors/news/karim-manes-future-still-uncertain-due-to-covid-19

Though Mane remains steadfast in his desire to visit the programs, he and Hertzog have discussed the possibility of committing to a university without setting foot on campus.

"What's important for me an my family is just to take a visit, visit the school and get to see the facility in person and everything before making a decision, we're kind of set on that right now," Mane said. "Eventually if the situation forces us to make a decision without visiting, than I'll probably have to talk to my parents about it again."

Mediocrity sucks. But I digress. Couldn't Mane come to Milwaukee on his own? Walk the campus. Check-out Fiserv. Doesn't mean Wojo & Co have to be involved since we are in a dead zone. It would be no different than me walking around showing my nephew the Union, over to the library, the rec center etc. However, Wojo and staff have been on Mane's turf before any other program. If that means anything, and campus visits are out the window, it should tip the scale in MU's favor, IMO.

I think it's pretty clear he's waiting to visit Michigan State and then will commit there

My hope is, Izzo isn't willing to wait for him and Wojo is...but yes, after reading this I came to only one conclusion...he wants to go to Michigan State.

If I was the teenager? I'm sure Izzo can be compelling as none other and the results speak for themselves.

If I was an adult who a teenager was looking to for advice and guidance? Helllllllll no. That would literally be the very last program in this country I would ever advise my child to attend. That entire university is as bad as it comes. Covering up child abuse, sexual abuse, etc. all for what? A leg up on some athletic fields? Screw that entire university and the East Lansing justice system.

Izzo, like D'Antonio, can play the innocent victim, ignorance is bliss game. They're as dirty and corrupt as anyone not named Nassar in that city. And that's saying A LOT.

Ok gang, you are thinking like adults.

None of us knows what's in Mr. Mane's thought process. Perhaps he wants to see another school before he makes a final decision. Perhaps not.
