Bear Down is such a dumb motto for a school that is the Wildcats

It is odd but there's actually a cool story behind it.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

At Marquette, Nico could be the final piece for a team on the rise. He would join a talented, deep and experienced roster -- playing with 4 seniors and 4 juniors (barring transfers or injuries). Not to mention a Top 10 level offense featuring some of the best shooters in the country.

At Arizona, Nico might be counted on to be The Man. Sean Miller has a strong track record. But the Wildcats lost nearly everybody coming into this season. No returning player averaged more than 5 ppg. If high usage is high on his list, he could find the opportunity in Tucson.

There's no telling how much the ongoing FBI recruiting investigation or Big East vs. Pac-12 exposure might play into his decision.

My thoughts are no need to be greedy, I'd take the one of the two  that fit's the best, and be happy to maintain the  fairness and camaraderie that I see that the team has now.

Reminds me of that old say "Bulls make money, Bears make money, Pigs not so much."

I always heard that saying ended, "Pigs get slaughtered." But maybe we don't want to upset PETA!

As for my question and your answer ... sure, any of us would be happy with one of the two. I was just thinkin' out loud!

I very, very much like your chances on Mannion. I have been optimistic for several months and remain optimistic.

Arizona fans seem overly confident that Nico is already a lock for them. Wonder if they have their own version of Big Daddy.

Honestly, they probably see they aren't going up against a blueblood and think there's no way he chooses MU over them. Also, our lack of NCAA success recently probably makes them think we are just in there for the heck of it.

I doubt they realize how strong our team will be the year Nico is in school.

Nico Mannion has eliminated Villanova and Duke. Just announced he is down to Marquette and Arizona.

@PatLawless_ "Nico Mannion, a class of 2019 PG from Pinnacle HS (AZ), just announced he is down to Arizona & Marquette."

My, oh, my.

I really think we get him.  Zona feels like that 'respect the homestate team' thing.  I believe he thinks we can make a Final 4 run assuming Sammy and Markus stay.  Now for one of my patented 'conversations'.

Scene:  Sobelman's

Nico:  I really like it here but I want to know you guys will be with me.

Markus and Sammy in unison:  Brother, you come here and we'll stay.  Promise.  Now let's try to win a national championship together.

There is a reason for it and it is a good story.

We best stay away from anything on that front.  Golden Eagles and "Ring out ahoya"?

They have had a long history of success.   Not sure out of Sean Miller yet.  Good but not great.  Been to there gym, nice campus facility but does not compare to
the Fiserv Forum.  The Big East is a much better conference and he can get to Madison Square Garden for more than a few games.  Lots of upside here, and freinds
he has known a long time.

Honestly, it's less about thinking he's a lock to Arizona and more about disrespect for us. There was legitimate fear with Nova/Duke because they are blue bloods. Arizona fans couldn't possibly fathom how anyone would choose Marquette over Arizona.

It's okay, people were saying the same things about Nova on the recruiting trail a few years ago. Gotta win big if we want to earn their respect.

But I mean what I said earlier. That fan base is getting antsy after the whole FBI investigation. They watched their entire 2018 class decommit (though they got one back) and have yet to land a 2019 recruit. With Mannion being local and us as their only competition....if they lose they will have a meltdown.

You guys know where Wojo has had success?  With families that truly believe MU will be a transformative experience for their son in areas well beyond the basketball court.  Markus, Sammy and others are all fine students and outstanding young people.  I think chick told me the summer school GPA was like 3.7 for the basketball team this year.  Thurl Bailey knows the Mannion family well.  So I very much believe that if Nico and his parents buy into Cura Personalis, he's heading our way.

Also interesting to consider Brunson. He joined Nova in September 2014. While they were Big East champs, before that they had 2 9-seeds and a NCAA miss in the 3 prior years.

Brunson picked Nova over Illinois, Michigan State, Purdue, & his dad's alma mater Temple. He was not local for Nova and went there before anyone considered them a blue blood.

Might Nico also make the non-local pick to a program on the rise? If so, he could be our Brunson.

We should get him. Wojo always gets his man.

Would be a nice time for MU to announce a home/home with ASU starting in Tempe in '19, Milwaukee in '20.

I know that won't happen, but I'm sure ASU would rather see Mannion wind up at Marquette.

Hell, I'd be good with Grand Canyon too. Louisville did a two-for-one with them.

Well holy fudge nuggets. Go away to BFE (or middle of nowhere Utah with no cell service) for a week and look at all this amazing news! Let's do this!

(But also everyone remember the grimes... get excited but don't freak out as be mean if it's not us)

The argument for Mannion is really simple.

Son: Come here and we will win and you will be part of something special.

Go there and we will win and have something special.

It's up to you.

Al used that one more than once.

I'm excited about our team for next year and thereafter and if we get Mannion, my God we will have something special. If we don't it still will be special.
