JB--if kid signs high major offer is it common to continue to play AAU all summer? If so, is it just to stay in top basketball condition? Seems to me if you signed at your dream school that you wouldn't need/want to travel and play in summer tournaments across the country. Your work to get the scholly is done, no? Only reason I guess would be to influence on the recruits?

These kids are competitors and basketball is their life. It is that way with any sport that has any sort of elite league that can be played in the offseason. These days, teenage kids with high level D1 talent in any sport want to play - and if they don't, they probably won't end up being that great of a player at the collegiate level. That's all theyve done their whole life.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

HS ball in general - I don't watch a ton of it; whereas (depends on the year, but in general) I watch quite a bit of spring/summer and even fall ball. It's like when I'm playing lunch bball at the office -- we've got some really good players, a ton of mediocrity and some weak players (e.g., me). Can be tough to gauge players, especially bigs if they're able to post up guys 6 inches smaller than them all night (nh).

Armstrong is 'OK'. Theo's offense was a lot stronger than usual tonight - 21 points is not the norm for him. Of course, a lot of them on putbacks, but had the nice dribble, spin (travel?) from the left elbow against Race that you mentioned... ran the floor and was rewarded a couple times... will be interested to see how much his offense develops at MU. See him as a ~16% usage guy early on. Some mean, nasty dunks but you're not going to run the offense to him. As you saw, which was the norm, even CP doesn't send a ton of balls to him in the post as a normal part of the offense.

Defensively, yes.. physical presence, he's a concern for people coming into the paint no doubt... in that regard, I think he can help right away... come in, be physical and a warrior inside on d.

Race is very interesting to me. I don't have him far behind Joey, and they are similar in their versatility. Race will often defensive rebound and put the ball on the floor / take it up the court... similar to what you would see Henry do... he can handle the ball, shoot from outside.. but also use his body to post up down low.. versatile offensive threat... didn't have a great game last night, but when he's on.. look out. I always look at his dad (nh), who was there last night... just massive.. obviously an NFL guy is usually gonna be built.. but, with Race's frame.. it's not difficult to imagine him being one strong & nasty son of a gun in his later college years. Add it with the ball handling, passing (good eye, and usually makes several smart and crisp cross-court passes to spot up shooters when he gets doubled every night), range on his shot... super intriguing for me. Cannot wait to watch him alongside Matthew Hurt next month! (Matthew played 17U, Race 16U w/ Jarvis Thomas last year)

McKinley was in the same program (D1 Minnesota).. he's an interesting kid and I think Dayton is a great spot for him. A couple years ago, had him on the fence of MM vs HM... at Dayton, I think he's in a nice spot. He's short, but very strong and relentless. You don't see small PG's rebound like him.. and he did it in adidas play as well... his shot has gotten better, he can attack the rim... distribute the ball, run the offense... nice PG.

For MU, last year Traci's DR% was 9%.. that's Rowsey's this year.. Markus is at 10%.. Kin should be at least 12%, but would probably project him in the 12%-14% range... obviously depends on coaching instruction / game plan, but he'll be able to get rebounds in college... despite the size.

Thanks for this thorough report, JB.

Theo sounds like exactly what this team/program needs - a tough kid who actually enjoys mixing it up down low.

Other recruits besides GE at the game?
I saw GE sitting with Jamil Cain and Robbie Logterman sitting next to Theo John.
It's funny whenever I see these guys and peek over at them, they always seem uninterested and checking their phone.

Not talented enough to get it to appear in the thread but that's the link to the twitter image.

Also, note the "For the Culture" reference.  That must have been a point of emphasis of the team, to not do it for themselves, but for the MU culture.

Was that Haanif in the back between Luke and Sacar?  That kinda looks like Greg Elliott actually.  Pretty sure GE went into the locker room after the game, I saw him heading that direction.

Are we sure HC was there? If not that is a bit strange, even given his limited minutes today.

He is.  He walked past me in the Courtside Club yesterday.

And solidly built, too.

Jamal Cain (17/Cornerstone) 2016/17 Late Season Highlights

2017 Marquette commit Jamal Cain is finishing up his senior year in impressive fashion. Averaging close to 25 points and 15 rebounds per game, Rivals #75 player in the country is prepared to help lead Detroit Cornerstone on a deep run in the state playoffs.

The 6’8 wing has played all 5 positions for Cornerstone this year, and scores at all 3 levels in a variety of ways. Known for a sweet stroke from the outside and highlight-reel dunks, Jamal has been creating off the dribble in isolation situations and has made tremendous strides in that aspect of his game. Cain’s playmaking skills are going to make him a tough guard considering his shooting range and effortless stroke makes it impossible to sag off. Marquette is getting a gifted athlete that isn’t even close to reaching his full potential, but has the versatile skillset to make an impact early in his career. See below for highlights:

When guys blowup for the spring recruiting season, they take time to consider their options, unless their dream school suddenly takes notice.  Why wouldn't they?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Cain reminds me of Mikal Bridges.  Needs a good 30 lbs of muscle.

As for Elliott, the longer we get from his visit the less confident I become.  Would love a commitment this week.

Very few players commit on visits in the spring. Most wait until the season is over. Gives them a better idea of roster makeup. I highly doubt that Elliott is committing this week, but that doesn't mean we're not a leader for his services.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.
