Quote from: brewcity77 on May 03, 2026, 11:53:43 AMWould depend on the next president, but Val did a good job getting us a seat at the table and you can't really leave out the conference that won 4 of the last 10 titles. Not sure we'd be treated as an equal, but we'd have a seat at the table.

I don't feel like the Big East winning 4 of the last 10 titles is a good thing in the eyes of the Big10 and SEC. It feels like they want to squash the competition, not foster more. Whatever maximizes profit for the conference is what's driving the decision making, not competition. And they don't want to share any of those profits with lesser conferences.

That's why they need them. Ultimately they'll go from getting 50% of the revenue (after non-revenue) to 75-80% of a much bigger pie and being able to cut non-revenue altogether.

But for that to look legit, you need the handful of UConn, Villanova, Gonzaga type programs to give that air of legitimacy.

Was anyone else at the Cream City Collision yesterday  If so what were your thoughts.
Most of us in our group were wearing our Marquette gear. We saw some WI and Big 18 gear. Like when we witnessed Tyler Kolek and Kon each make about 24 out of 25 3s shooting around the world, Kager was on fire from 3 and at the end made 2 3s from near half court. Kager also had some nice dunks along with Gonzaga commit Dooney Johnson and Iowa State Crystal Ball lean Donovan Davis. Any other reports

To me is sounds like a massive green wiener report of some elite local talent that Shaka should be bringing to Marquette this deep into his tenure.

I love me some SS, but cmon coach

A Catholic crowd would never do that. Lutheran crowds are so mean!

Thanks for reciting Crystal Ball predictions.

Would be nice if this was as accurate as your "Fru: No" when discussing which portal players have mutual interest in Marquette, but seems like the word is out on this one.

Zog from Margo

ISU has become the hometown school for Milwaukee area players that don't go to Duke or another blue blood. Shaka really doesn't have anyone on his staff with strong state ties. Shaka hadn't lived in Wisconsin since he went to college. It doesn't matter if you win but MU has watched some pretty good local players go elsewhere.

Davis lives nowhere near Milwaukee.

Or you can use your brain and reasonably deduce that the top players at Phenom are likely headed to Nike schools.

Yes he's an hour and 50 minutes away, but that still makes MU the closest high major D-1 school to his hometown. How far is he from Ames? If you want to limit it to just the Milwaukee area, there still have been a lot of good players who MU couldn't, or was not inclined to, land.

Uh...you know you were the one who was talking about "Milwaukee area players" right? So you are the one who made the limitation.

Yep because Jordan Brand is a flaggship big money nike school.

And all of the Phenom kids go to Marquette, Georgetown, Michigan. Wait they don't. Hey North Carolina got Trimble to go there, because his older brother went there.

Their elite prospects, the ones Nike care about, will go to Nike schools with the Nike Logo. Iowa State, Duke, Bama, Gonzaga, etc..

I could be wrong but I think he just wants you to use the term local correctly. It's like when people were referring to the Hausers as "local" when they were from farther away than Gary, Indiana.

That's just not reality in today's day of paying college athletes.  This isn't a decade or even half a decade ago when you had to get creative in ways to compensate players.  The shoe companies have almost no say whatsoever in where kids are going to schools.  Top transfers transfer to/from Adidas/Nike schools all the time.

And if Nike was calling the shots, Iowa State is certainly not the top choice.  Or top 20 choice.

It wasn't until they rapidly increased their NIL, got a good coach, etc... It is everything in combination.

But Pheonom does a very very good job of keeping the nike logo on the guys they really care about.

You really think Nike is telling kids playing on Nike AAU teams that they can't go to Jordan Brand schools?  The brand that is...well, part of Nike?

So they're telling Donovan Davis that he has to go to Iowa State over Marquette, but they're letting a MUCH higher profile recruit in Caleb Wilson play at Jordan Brand's flagship program, UNC?

Sure.  I'm buying it.

Got it. My mistake. I'll say it another way. MU being an in-state team and the closest high major D-1 school for a number of top Wisconsin players, has not landed any. By contrast, ISU regularly pulls top players out of Wisconsin and has built a better program.
