Ouch. We'll get to see how he works out, I guess.

Some early season highlights of 2024 Bryce Dortch.

This is the most Shaka-looking player I've seen in a minute. Would love to have him on board.

He is Nazr Mohammed's son. Shaka has been on him for a bit. Michigan, Notre Dame, and Marquette were some of his targets for future visits. I would think Marquette will stay in the running for him for a while. Only concern would be Kentucky because his dad went their, but UK is having a little trouble right now.

Nice player. One of the standouts on a loaded public HS team here.

Chase Ross body type. Kinda similar all-around game, but not as finished or well-rounded a player yet. But he's 2 years younger than Chase, so that's not surprising.

His dad is 7'2.  Do you think he is likely to grow?

Quite possible one would think. That would be great for the young man.

Thanks for the tidbits.

I know Marquette is already overbooked for next season, but they previously recruited and offered 6'6" Alpha Chibambe

He unfortunately tore his ACL, but appears to be back and is said to be better and stronger than he was before.  Absolute freak athlete with incredible size for a guard/wing.

Offer was 2 years ago, safe to say we probably aren't pursuing now.

Marquette 100% isn't pursuing 2023 recruits at all at this point. It would require a massive team exodus to recruit anyone else from that year.

Is it unreasonable to think that Kam, Oso or O Max would leave to pursue professional opportunities?

Yes, no, maybe. Considering we're one over, it's smart to always be cognizant, but my guess is if they were going to fill a scholarship in the event one of those guys left, it would be looking at young members in the transfer portal in March/April, not freshmen in January.

Oso and O-Max could test the waters, but both would probably be undrafted this year.  Hopefully that means they return. But they could still decide to leave, just as Lewis and Blue did.

Kam strikes me as a really good college player with little chance to make the NBA. He's lacks the speed and leaping ability that most 6-4 NBA players have, not an NBA level defender, lacks dynamic passing ability, and he's a good but not great shooter.  Maybe he gets cup of coffee in  the NBA, like Jerel McNeal, but hard to see more than that.  Most likely an international pro prospect.

Yep, if three players left, which is extremely unlikely and would probably require a final four run or a collapse of insanely epic proportions. Even still, Shaka would prioritize a  transfer or a 2024 recruit leaving a roster spot blank over most 2023 recruits at this point in the calendar. It would take something bizarre happening to end the season to even think about looking at any 2023 recruits in late April.

It is virtually impossible to have another 2023 recruit come in.

jfp61

The staff is already on to 2024 and 2025 recruits.

Wings and forwards in 2024, and bigger guards in 2025. Pretty clear priorities being established.

We've been told NIL money will be used to retain our own.  I'd hope that we could pay as much (or more) than a G League or okay overseas salary to keep guys who won't be drafted by an NBA team this offseason, while convincing those guys their best chance to make it to the NBA is to get paid more at Marquette for one more year, develop their game further, and then get drafted.

Yep, Yep.  This theory of MU taking care of their own will be tested this offseason.  Could be a source of frustration for the coach we all want to stay for a couple decades if this does not happen the right way.

But that's for the off-season.  Let's enjoy the ride this year first.

MU paid there top 3 players a little more then G League money but not close to a 2 way contract.  Not only do they get money but you still have to remember they
get room and board, and travel is not bad.  Can players get paid more from other colleges, yes, that might be the problem.  Kolek would be the likely choice they
go after, but hopefully he is happy with the role at MU.

Room, board and travel yes, but also required to go to class.  I could certainly understand if a fringe prospects opinion that working on their game as a full time job surrounded by NBA development coaches would have a higher chance of success than staying another year in college.  I'm not sure I would agree with it in every situation, but I can see the perspective.

My hope is we slow down the facilities arms race and the coaches salaries and some existing donor money gets put to the collective.  I would think most hyper competitive coaches would rather make 3.5 that 4.2 if 700K was used to retain their two best players.
