How is "not gettable" different from missed on?
Missed on in recent classes:
Leon Bond
Seth Trimble
Tyrese Hunter
Jalen Johnson
Johnny Davis

FWIW, I have no expectation that MU lands every good player in Wisconsin. It's never going to happen. But to suggest we haven't missed on any is plainly wrong.

Not gettable, implies they were going elsewhere regardless of MU's recruitment or interest. It is very different from "missed" because it adds context.

Leon and Tyrese were the only two who considered Marquette. Bond Shaka couldnt convince him in 2 months time, There is your "miss". Tyrese was all in on Iowa State, plus even if Marquette wanted him, he would be playing at Texas this year either way.

Jalen had Nike backing him, so he went to one of the two main Nike schools in Duke. Johnny wanted to play with his brother, and UW offered him and his brother first, plus madison was a close school to home for him. Seth Trimble followed his half brother to UNC.

None of those three were considering Marquette in the slightest.

I have a hard time holding many of those against Shaka. He wasn't here for Hunter, Johnson, or Davis. Those are Wojo decisions. Trimble and Bond were the first two players he offered. He tried, but Tony Bennett had a strong relationship already built with Bond and Trimble followed his brother to UNC. Both commitments were made just a few months after Shaka got here.

Milan was the only major 2023, so there's an argument there. Knueppel is the biggest test for 2024. Maybe someone like Sekou Konneh if he develops. We'll see how Davion Hannah and Kai Rogers play out in 2025.

All things considered, there aren't a ton of high major guys that come through the state. That run of Looney, Stone, Ellenson, Johnson, Baldwin, Foster was pretty abnormal by state standards.

Ultimately, though, this staff can only be blamed for available players offered by this staff. Wojo's shortcomings shouldn't be given to Shaka by osmosis.

I agree with this largely. As we go on i have questions about Kon, and how he might fit both play style and culturally. I think he could be special in a MU uniform, but the staff might need to pitch a role that hasn't exactly been implemented in the first year. But the play style would be fun but the fit isn't clean.

Plus, I think 2024 might only be a one or two man class. One big, and one wing. And it could easily be a 1 man class if this years team finds success, and gels. I don't know if thats intriguing to him at his current level.

I think MU is in dire need of someone to play his role. The amount of looks that a shooter can get in this system, especially when it's played with pace, is huge. If the defense is sped up the ball will find a good shot. That's why I so desperately want Jop to lock in defensively, to get those minutes and let a bunch of shots fly.

I haven't seen enough of Kon to know if he can fit on the other end of the floor.

Man, it'd sure be nice to start competing with other high major for kids instead of the Browns and Southern Illinois's of the world.

I know what the slurpers will say.  "TAMU came in for this kid we got!  Xavier is offering that kid we're offering!"  But those are one off programs in a list of mid (at best) majors.  I want players who are listed with the Kentuckys, Kansases, UNCs, and Dukes of the world, not the Salukis.

Better to be in early on players who are unknowns and may blow up than to throw 100 offers against a wall against the top guys and end up dry or with whoever falls to you.

Eh, I'm also not overly impressed with Shaka's recruiting at Marquette so far.  However, if he can get "culture" to win a bunch of games, I'll be all in.  Only time will tell.

For years, we have pissed and moaned that the coaches at UW developed players.  And we pissed and moaned that what we were doing (with wojo) wasn't working.

Now that we're doing what UW is doing (jury is out on success of course) we're going to piss and moan... after one year... where we exceeded expectiations

God I love Marquette fans.

You could have just left it at that.  Although I think you'd be hard pressed to find a post by me pissing or moaning about wanting to be more like UW.  I also don't think being underwhelmed with recruiting is pissing or moaning.  But, hey, if it makes your experience more enjoyable to think of it that way, I'm not going to stop you!

Any and all concerns about recruiting are legitimate.  We've gotten star happy because of all the services out there and well, stars win more.

Now, do I look at what Shaka is doing and see a plan?  I do.  Will it work?  I don't know but I hope so.

For all the complaints about the previous staff, my biggest gripe was retention.  I accept transfers will happen, but way too many players that looked like key components left.  I'd be pretty happy if Shaka has key components sticking around 4 years at a crack because that will win more games against, younger "star" driven rosters

My biggest complaints about Wojo were lack of big guards, lack of switchables, lack of a balanced, complete roster.

My concerns about Coach Smart's recruiting so far is lack of beef down low and still missing that swiss army knife 6'6 switchable.

I don't think you'll get real beef down low under smart, unless they land a 5 star center/ near 5 star center. The team needs mobility at that position above all else. Especially defensively.

I know.    The dream is 6'11, 250, and mobile enough to defend on the perimeter.    Not many of them around.    Coach Smart is going for numbers and mobility and hoping to find ways to guard the UConn/SHU style bigs down low.    And Oso, Keeyan, Gold all look mobile.

And Georgetown has Wahib, Akok and Matumbo. MU better not miss too many shots in the Big East.

Knueppel is a dead eye shooter and I believe has 4 younger brothers. I've heard the hope is they all go D1. I expect him to stay instate and that could let someone (likely us or Madison) get a line of lights out shooters. Getting him would also be really good for the relationship with Phenom U/Team Herro. For those reasons, I'd take him over almost any other 2024 kid.

Working with Diener at Chapmen Academy, MU has a shot, Madison not so much

Knueppel just rubs me so neutral, unless he grows another 2-3 inches.  He's a great shooter at his level so far, but an undersized 3 lacking athleticism isn't my ideal.  He feels like a Big10/ND kid.
