In the short term, I agree. In the long term, I think they might try to set the G League up as competitive with college. I'm not sure if it will ever work because you have to then develop a fanbase, but there's certainly an argument that a lack of top talent has hurt the NCAA. If the best 18-year-old stars of the future are in the G League, maybe people start tuning in. I have no idea if it will work, but it's another way to build a brand.

It's an interesting idea at the very least. Thanks for the perspective, brew.

Mind linking to this somewhere?
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

I don't think it will work. The G League is already on ESPN and NBATV and doesn't draw anyone even with some recognizable names. Adding HS stars won't help. ESPN already broadcast HS games with kids who potentially and again a few people watch them. Maybe most of the audience is alumni/fans of NCAA teams which has players committed to or are being recruited by their schools.

I also don't think it will be beneficial to the players in terms of money. Obviously short term playing for 6 figures vs nothing in college (insert your own joke) is better. But the big shoe endorsements and marketing opportunities will go to the more visible players and that will be the NCAA stars. How much buzz (name recognition) is around RJ Hampton or even Wiseman compared to Toppin? Zion Williamson made more in endorsements last year than his NBA contract based on being hyped so much on ESPN as they promoted their Duke games. If he played the same way in Australia or Europe he would have gotten considerable less.

It could change if ESPN moves the G League games to prime spots and promote the hell out of the games. But I don't see it happening for the same reasons why minor league baseball games aren't shown nationally.

I agree with this. If I'm regionally located I might go to a couple G league games, but I'm not tuning into a game with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants unless the NBA is locked out. The ones worth watching will go straight to the league.

I haven't heard the specifics, but they would essentially just be full-time minor leaguers and draft eligible the next year. Darius Bazley from Syracuse was going to do that, but instead took the year to work out and train and then went into the 2019 draft. I imagine they would play the year, get the coaching and training regimens of a G League team, then go into the draft. They wouldn't be tied to a team until they were drafted and under a NBA contract.
Up to now , no high school recruit has taken the G League 125 K offer . The risk is very high in doing so, in that the recruit goes into the G league, against battle tested starving veterans and don't perform and  could throw away their chance at being drafted with a first round guaranteed contract.  More kids have taken the play overseas route in safe settings like Australia where they can more readily perform.

I think that Memphis writer is wrong. Mane has been conducting a ton of virtual visits over the past week (including MU) and said he remains focused on going to college.

Highly doubt he is going pro unless someone promised him a first round pick.....

And personally he needs a year or two.....

Being 14th or 15 player on the bench and getting no playing time is not good for his development......

And he certainly does not want to play in the "D" league.....

I think we'll see less and less HS guys going overseas now that this is an option.

Shooter McGavin

500 k will draw a lot more players than the 125 k people had been talking about.  This definitely will lead more teens to the G-league.  We'll see if it is sustainable though with no fan base.  No viewers.  The league could be bankrupt in two years.

Absolutely agree. After Carton yesterday, if I'm Mane, I'm really excited about being a pivotal part of this Marquette team.  You will have as much talent around you as anyone and you'll have a chance to make a huge mark on a team from the get-go.

And, you get a Marquette education. After basketball, what would you rather have on your wall... MARQUETTE or Memphis (as a former Tennessean, I damn well know the answer to that!) degree.

As to development and 12th on a bench, just ask Henry Ellison how well that worked out.

Galway Eagle

Curious how many of those contracts there are to go around. And if he doesn't perform to standard in there and drops, I could see a lot of players getting scared off.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Willing to expand on this a bit more? I am curious about what you are hearing on this point.

$500,000. Someone smarter than me needs to explain the economics to me. The Herd play 24 home games which means Green needs to generate over $20,000 a game in additional revenue. The arena holds 4,000 people. Local radio and TV rights (if any I don't live in Menominee) won't pick up the difference. And why would people from Oshkosh be interested in a kid from CA who won't have any affiliation with the Bucks?

Now if HS kids who sign with the league are able to be drafted and assigned to their G League team then maybe they will be able to recoup their investment. But the age requirement for the draft is in the CBA and needs to negotiated and what else will the owners have to give up to get them to change before the new contract?

Litehouse

I'm struggling to see what the incentive is for the NBA/G-League to invest all this money developing these players when colleges will do it for free.

So presuming DJ is eligible, we go from 78-->53. What does adding Mane put MU at?

No way to know as Torvik's projection model doesn't include the ability to add freshmen. I added Justin Turner on top of Carton and it took us from 59 (where we are now, despite the 53 projection) to 48.
