They radio hosts are very happy and they said this means the Knicks are trading Deuce Mcbride to free up cap space for I-Hart.

I like this pick for Kolek and the Knicks.  He slots right in as Brunson's backup, where he should thrive with lots of good pieces around him.

totally. They were commenting last night about Brunson really being the only one that can generate plays for others. Kolek is option 2! Very happy for him

This is probably better for him than almost any other situation.

Perfect?, please explain why.  Yeah, AS OF RIGHT NOW, he will be backup behind McBride, Divencenzo, Hart, Burks, in the rotation with guards.  Brunson plays like 40 minutes a game and McBride picks up the rest as PG.

I am extremely happy he is with my beloved Knicks, but Tyler probably going to be a two way player and G League regular, pending no Knick injuries. Many other teams would have been a perfect situation.  If something changes, man, he would be a Madison Square Garden favorite.

Congrats to Tyler.

Just read about McBride trade rumors above, nice if that happens.  Changes everything. Hope it happens.  That why I said, as of now.

Knicks are a great fit for Kolek. Perhaps the only contending team on which he has a clear path to playing time his rookie season.

Vecenie and Hollinger on the Knicks picking Kolek:

Tyler Kolek had a phenomenal collegiate career, especially over the last two years. Few players across the country improved as much as he did. He struggled during his first year at Marquette and vaulted past that level by improving as a shooter and forcing teams to respect the threat of his offensive game. I love his vision as a passer and unselfish demeanor. I love his footwork and finishing ability. I love his strength and ability to playing through contact. But Kolek needs to prove that he can consistently make shots behind screens. Otherwise, NBA teams will dare him to fire from the perimeter. I think he'll reach a solid level in that area because he's such a good shooter off the catch; it's hard to believe he couldn't grow into one off the bounce, too. There will be some defensive worries with his lack of size, length and speed. However, I buy him at least carving out a role in the NBA as a backup point guard. If his shooting comes around off the dribble and his finishing translates, he could be far better than that. His strength, footwork, touch and deceleration are traits he shares with many of the breakout lead guards of the past five years. I feel confident projecting him to be an awesome backup with potential for more.

Hollinger's analysis: This is a solid move for a win-now team, getting a reliable ballhandler for its bench when one of the real weaknesses of the Knicks' roster was the lack of playmaking behind Jalen Brunson. Kolek profiles as a backup, at best, but the other angle here is that the Knicks will likely have him on a rookie minimum deal, helping them further their quest to limbo below the tax apron while completing their trade for Mikal Bridges.

I think playing behind Brunson, or even just watching him, will be beneficial.  I also think it's worth revisiting that most people thought Brunson could eventually be a solid back-up PG.   And I also think Thibs is the right coach for TyKo.

Probably I'll get verbally flattened for saying this on here, but I think Brunson is a good Kolek comp.  Especially if you'd asked me the question 1-2 years ago.  Brunson has developed massively in the Knicks system and as a player himself and maybe his ceiling is higher than TKO, but as a rookie to rookie comp, I don't think there's much closer.

To me this means it's good for TKO to play in a system where the system doesn't change when he enters the game.  He might at this point be a poor mans Brunson, but what backup PG doesn't offer a few compromises?

I think in terms of being elite collegiate players that are seen as less prominent pro prospects, they are similar, but I'm curious about that comp. Brunson was a power guard, more athletic, was the prototype Villanova post up guard. Kolek has far better court vision, is a better passer, and his inside game is based on using every millimeter of length to create difficult to contest shooting angles.

I'd love to see Kolek have a similar career path, but I don't see his game as all the similar to Brunson.

Yep, quite different players. Both get results, but the path is far different.

MU82

I don't know about "far different."

Kolek pretty regularly posted up guards he could bully; Brunson was known as a hard worker; Kolek, like Brunson, became more effective when he became a more reliable scorer; each was the heart of his successful college team and extension of his coach on the floor.

And now, both were overlooked on draft day, relegated to the second round.

Of course they aren't exact copies. Kolek is the superior passer, while Brunson has become an all-star caliber scorer. Brunson appears to have more physical strength and athletic ability - I say "appears to" because Kolek hasn't shown what he can be as a pro yet. Looking forward to it!
