As for The Boys, Homelander is really a bit on the nose at this point, isn't he?

Yessir. Excellent writing, and an Emmy-worthy season for Antony Starr IMHO.

Yea just wait.  The last 2 episodes have a couple huge "oh wow" bits

Just watched the last two episodes. Yeah. Wow. Honestly, that last episode was one of the most enjoyable - and tense - episodes of TV I've seen in a long, long time.

Better Call Saul is a masterclass

Just an incredible episode even though we know the end for certain character(s).  Johnathan Banks and Rhea Seehorn were incredible.  Tony Dalton can probably pick any villain role he wants moving forward

I didn't realize the home stretch was starting again. I know what I'll be watching tonight.

It's nice to feel this way after watching a show. They did a good job with this one.

Pretty big casting news. Hopefully it gets back to some of the older quality.

Really not getting the Emmy-nom love for White Lotus.

It would be too strong to say it sucked, but it simply wasn't that good IMHO. Way more stupid than funny or clever, and I really didn't care about the characters. Almost stopped watching but decided we wanted to see how it ended; the ending was disappointing, too.

Knowing Mike White's repertoire I think this is the point.

He makes it painfully obvious in his work that the average American thinks their life to be much more significant and impactful than it ever is and he exposes the narcissistic ride people take as they travel down the road of this fruitless pursuit of importance.

Not liking or not caring about the characters is his calling card.

THats the emmys for you.

They pick a few shows and just go wild. The fact that whole cast got nommed is wild.

I guess. But I liked some characters in School of Rock, and I saw he also had some writing credits on Freaks and Geeks, and I liked pretty much everybody in that.

Plus, one of my favorite series of recent years, Succession, is filled with unlikable characters ... and yet I love it.

So I don't think that's it with White Lotus. I just don't think it was very good. Others, including the Emmy committee, obviously disagree.

The problem isn't that the characters are terribly unlikable. The problem is that they're all boring cliches. Except for maybe Armond, there wasn't a primary character on that show I haven't seen many times before.

The White Lotus was John from Cincinnati.

An inane show that I wasted numerous hours of my life on. There was nothing even remotely interesting about either the story or the characters. Not even one actor should have even been considered for an award unless it was a razzie. Boring people doing boring things all while making boring conversation.

Not everyone. Jon Gries (also known as Uncle Rico) as Jennifer Coolidge's fling was totally snubbed.

Have some patience, FFS.

I think you and I were the only two people in America who actually sat through all of John From Cincinnati. For me, it's become a punchline the same way some use Ishtar or Waterworld as a punchline.

The ones you mentioned are staff writes. Orange County, Chuck and Buck, Enlightened are White-driven projects.

I get that people were bored by it or unimpressed or uninterested but as I wrote White's entire point is that you are a boring cliche, you are unimpressive, you are uninteresting.

The inanity is the point because that is life. Season two on its way.

So his point is that since we are all boring, we want boring entertainment on TV?  OK.

To see how it should be done, watch Somebody Somewhere on HBO. Other than Succession, it is as good as it gets on HBO this year.

I've been watching Sunderland 'Til I Die on Netflix and am really enjoying it. While I'm generally -- albeit vaguely -- familiar with Premier League, I really don't follow it it so the game/season results in the show are all new to me. And I certainly don't follow The Championship. As S1 was coming to a close, I was really much more invested in Sunderland that I expected to be when I started. Not knowing how it would turn out really added to the experience. I'm looking forward to S2.

I also can't help but think that my enjoyment of this show was enhanced by watching two seasons of Ted Lasso.
