Agree on the Ned Stark comp.  I had not read GoT and had not played LoU, so it was thrilling/disturbing/heart-breaking when those shocks were delivered.  (And daughter/daughter figure watching both and vowing revenge...)

Rains of Castamere too, but bc I started watching GoT a few years in, I had heard that "something" like that had happened- still startling and so well done.

Apologies, SaW. I'll try to avoid making such comments in future weeks.

No worries. Frankly, the more sensible solution would be for me to not visit this thread until after I watch episodes of current series.

Quote from: reinko on April 21, 2025, 03:56:33 PMIf you watched, thoughts on the creative choices (Ellie there vs. Tommy).  I wasn't a gamer, but dug the the plot line of Tommy being back in Jackson to defend the front line.

SPOILERS!

I'm still really on the fence with it. On the one hand, Tommy was unconscious in the game anyway, so who cares if it were Dina or Tommy.

My struggle is with the Jackson fight. Awesome TV but it changes a lot in my mind.

SPOILERS FROM THE GAME

One, grief. With Joel's death, it was a loss for the community but the grief was singular for Ellie. Now, it's one of hundreds. Tommy weighs grief of a community and of a brother. That muddies it a bit for me.

Two, Tommy's next steps. Tommy goes out of revenge (again, singular). It makes the violence more profound because it's revenge for this one figure. Maybe him leaving at a time his community is grieving the most will hit harder, but I don't know.

I am glad they gave Ellie conscious time with Joel... that moment was important.

Thought this weeks Last of Us was a good comedown from the emotional toll of last weeks episode.

Well stated. It was a "chill" episode that set up the rest of what will be a great season.

It's not very practical that two young people who are inexperienced at combat are going to be able to take on a small army, but that's OK. It's TV; it doesn't have to be practical! It just has to be entertaining, and I'm confident that it will be.

Mobland on Paramount is getting me hooked. Releases every SUnday, Through 5 episodes. Helen Mirren is incredible.  If you like Irish people portrayed a mobsters blowing stuff up in London, you'll enjoy this one.

Tom Hardy has been so good in this.

Quote from: CreightonWarrior on April 30, 2025, 11:21:39 AMTom Hardy has been so good in this.

A phrase you can utter about almost any project he's been involved in for the last 20 years.  I know a bunch of people crap on the Venom movies, but he was absolutely fantastic and hilarious in every one, regardless of the overall film quality.

But as for Mobland, just did episode 1 the other night.  Wanted a few to build up cause I knew I would be thirsting for more immediately.  I absolutely LOVE Gangs of London, felt like it really filled a gap in the need for a project about the gritty organized crime in London, not the flashing quirky fun was that Guy Ritchie does (though I love that too).  And was excited as soon as this was announced, cause this is the same vein.  But even more so, its prestige television with a monster cast.  Been stoked for Hardy again in a TV leading role since Taboo, so if we couldn't get a full 2-3 season Alfie Solomons prequel to Peaky Blinders, this works.  Havent been disappointed

reinko

I thought Tom Hardy + Gareth Evans (director of the Raid) for a movie where a dirty cop has to fight his way thru a criminal underground would be a slam dunk, but Havoc on Netflix was really disappointing, I slogged thru it, but bleck.

Huge fan of the show and the first seasons, but this season of Hacks has been terrible.  Cliches, predictable, and kind of lazy with the tropes, IMO.   A show that used to make my wife and I cackle out loud every episode is now just a smattering of chuckles

That's disappointing to hear.  We just started the show. Through the first 8 episodes and we love it

Not many shows in history are funnier than Veep, but its last season was definitely less funny. All in the Family went on for years after it stopped being funny, and MASH went even longer. We laughed our asses off the first few years of Shameless; it ended up getting so bad we had to stop watching.

I agree with Wags about Hacks - still worth watching but definitely not as funny.

Just shows that it's not easy to make comedy, period. Even more difficult to stay funny for years and years.

I have enjoyed it. Maybe not quite as much as the earlier season so far, but it's still better than a lot of what's on TV right now.
Have some patience, FFS.

Which makes (random scooper who you find completely unfunny but want to get an ironic dig in on) even more impressive.  Staying funny after all this time.

Jimmy and Kayla were the goofy sideshow the first seasons.  Funny in a typical "look at these hapless goofs" tried and true humor.  Deborah and Ava carried the dynamic and humor and had so much high level banter and quips.  But this season I think 80% of the laughs have been Jimmy/Kayla related.  And thats sort of the problem, IMO.  Its still funny, but its dime a dozen humor for me.  Season 1-3 were Curb level funny and brilliant, Season 4 is just another comedy.

I recently rewatched the first season of SNL.

Except for the nostalgia factor of the few sketches and characters that are considered classics, it's not nearly as funny as I remembered.

I think the shock value of some of its outrageousness is what we thought was so funny.

Assuming we are talking about the same 10%, it felt rushed. This season all does to a certain extent, but also not sure how much they are going to deviate from the source material. Leaving out the Serevena seemed like significant foreshadowing.

But the previews for next week around the evolution of the cordyceps and how it spreads feels really important and something I was wondering how they'd handle.

I'm underwhelmed by Bella Ramsey's acting this season. She was great for younger Ellie, but the demeanor hasn't shifted enough to meet the tone this season demands.

MU82

I really liked the episode and I don't see any "bad" 10%. But I've never played the video game, and any deviation from it is immaterial to me - and that's probably true of the vast majority of TLOU viewers

Not that those who know the game are "wrong" to feel as TAMU and GB do. (I'm sure y'all are glad to have validation from me.)

I also have no problem with Ramsey's acting. I didn't think it rang true that Ellie was still furious with Joel 5 years later, but that was more of a writing thing than an acting thing IMHO. I thought Ramsey was strong in yesterday's episode, and the way she has portrayed the progression of her crush on Dina has been believable to me.
