How about Sanibel/Captiva? Heading down in a few weeks. Bonus points for great fish tacos, local breweries, decent espresso, places that have solid menus while accommodating my somewhat picky-eating kindergartner, & day to day activities (though I'm good on the beach the full week).

It's been years and years but cheeburger cheeburger is a must hit.

Bring water shoes, the beaches are all shells.

Great suggestions Muggs.

Ty.  The easiest thing to remember about the Big Island is that the two most popular areas, Waikoloa/Kailua-Kona, are the least interesting.  Unless you want to just lay on the beaches or golf.

This. Visit the town of Hilo or the little towns north of it. Hike through the nearby rainforest.
Not sure if the volcano is active, but seeing it at night if it is is spectacular.

The Mucky Duck on Captiva is a long standing tradition. Gets crowded though. Spectacular views.
Renting a kayak and paddling through Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is nice if you like that.

Doc Ford's restaurants, one on Sanibel, one on Captiva are good. Owner is local author Randy Wayne White, who writes novels similar to John MacDonald. About a former CIA turned marine biologist living in the area. Good and appropriate  beach reading material for your visit.

Order a blackened fish sandwich somewhere and try fish dip (Florida version of chips and salsa)

One last suggestion for a Floridian must do. Lunch at Cabbage Key. It is accessible only by boat. Family owned small resort. So you need to hitch a ride. I think there are still a bunch of places that will shuttle you out there.

We're flying into Hilo and spending the first 3 days on that side of the island and the volcano park. We'll head to the northwest side then for 5 days and fly out of Kona.

I just sent you a message, hope you got it.

Great job flying into Hilo but returning from Kona.

If you are at all into botanical gardens, the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden just north of Hilo is amazing.

Great spot.  The Hamakua coast is beautiful and often ignored by travelers.

Thanks for the Sanibel Scoop!

My one and visit to Louisville about 5 years ago I took a tour of Churchill Downs.  Very cool.
It was closed, but I stopped anyway at the Muhammad Ali Center.  It's right on the riverfront and has a viewing platform of the river.

Momma's Mustard, Pickles & BBQ -- I love that place. Great KC-style BBQ (the owner is a transplant).

Also, we really enjoyed our tour of the Louisville Slugger factory.

James Breeding, longtime BE official, was the COO of Louisville Slugger. He is now with Northwestern Mutual.

His officiating in MU games has improved for some reason.

KFC

The first KFC was actually in Corbin, KY, southeast part of the state.

Doc Crows is really good.  For all of the jokes, Porcini's has really good food.  The Library Bar in the Omni hotel has a great bourbon selection.

The Lens

Friends just did the Buffalo Trace tour and raved about it (even for kids).  It fills up tho so make a ressy.

Anticipating attending the BET next March and locked in a room for under $100 a night—able to cancel.   Never seen hotel rooms there so cheap.

Lock something in now and cancel if plans change.

PBRme

Have not been there is a while but used to stay at the Brown Hotel.  Great little bar with huge bourbon selection.  Very historic.
