Nah man, I was quoting the guy who said he had a very small part.

Speaking of the Lanche picture in that article. There is a female bartender which I cannot ever remember.  And I never noticed the scissors kick legs pose on a barstool as being so prevalent amongst the day patrons.

Doc,

That picture was taken in 1976 or 1977. At the time my brother owned the Lanche. The female bartender is my sister in law. My brother in law managed the Lanche for a couple of years after he graduated and his bride (an MU Nursing grad) worked part time when she wasn't saving lives. When my BIL decided it was time to get a real job (sometime in 78 or 79) my brother sold the place.

Don't think so but when my daughter left for MU as a freshman (1996), my brother gifted her an Avalanche basketball warm up that she has to this day. Green and gold, sweet looking. The actual jersey was framed in his basement for years. (The Lanche sponsored a team in the independent league of MU intramurals).

Did you brother buy the Lanche from Archie? I went there many afternoons during my time at MU.

No. He bought it from Maurice Yopek and his brother. Maurice's nickname was GB. When my brother asked him why they called him "GB" Maurice replied "Because I'm a good boy, Stevie!"

Archie was working there when my brother bought the place and my brother made him the day manager. I don't know if Archie ever owned the place.

Lenny,

Thanks for the update. Archie was one of a kind. Also, pretty cool that your family and my family owned two of the best bars on campus at the same time.

Goose, what bar did your clan own?  Can't remember.

My brother in law owned The Gym Bar. He opened it around '72 and sold to the Frenn's of Marquette Liquor around '90. The Frenn's ultimately sold it to MU. On a sidebar, saw Richie Frenn at an MU game in the last couple of years and it put a smile on my face.

Nice!

My buddies and I put a lot of money in your BIL's coffers, Goose. Or at least as much as $1 pitchers every Tuesday for two school years can put in an establishment owner's coffers.

I am sure I offset any profits generated by scoopers drinking The Gym. I am fairly certain that I was a financial drain for the ownership. In addition, aside from the free drinks, I took a lot of hours on a barstool from paying customers. A lot of great times there and I started dating my wife because of a chance meeting on a Saturday night in July '85. Greg "Pope" Johnson brought her to my attention that night and the rest is history, including The Gym Bar.

When did the Gym move to the Ardmore Bar location?

Drinking at the Gym the morning before the 1989 Notre Dame game is a very fond memory of mine from my time at Marquette.  F' Digger!

Not sure on exact date, but guessing around '92 or so.

I was definitely drinking before that game but I have no recollection where?
Probably a pre-game in my apartment with roommates and neighbors.

It was at the Ardmore when I started in 96.  Murphs was in the old Gym spot on wells.
