Heard one today that is surprisingly fun.  Don't believe I have ever heard another song by this band.

Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm

Anyone who grew up with American pie 2 Knows that cover

Guess I'm more of a "modern" cover kinda guy.  Here's a couple recent favorites:

The second is a little more obscure.  I'm not sure I really knew the original (or the Flume remix)

Johnny Cash was the greatest cover artist I've ever heard. Songs like Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, One by U2, and I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty were completely different when done by Cash and arguably as good or better. Loved his American series for the covers he had in there.

Greatest cover artist ever? You need to listen to more jambands

Love Johnny Cash. Wrote some great songs himself (the line from Fulsom Prison Blues - "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" is an "all timer") and, as you mention, he did some great covers.

One disappointment. When I first heard Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" I thought it was the best country song ever written. Still do. The only thing that would make it better, I thought, was if Johnny Cash sang it. When he did, though, he speeded up the tempo and turned it into that typical Cash rockabilly style. His voice was perfect for it, but (for me, anyway) the cover fell flat.

Lenny, the tune and about half the lyrics (though not the one you mention) were stolen directly from Crescent City Blues (which is an inferior song by a mile).

Would definitely agree with that with a couple others in the running:

Johnny Cash- Hurt
The Clash- I fought the law
Elton John- Pinball Wizard
Joan Jett- I love Rock N Roll

Good call on Hurt by Johnny Cash (he was near death when he recorded it, adding some real poignancy) but the Bobby Fuller Four version of I Fought the Law is itself a cover and a much better version of the song, IMHO.

There's also always the Dead Kennedys version.

Really interesting, great find. Fulsom Prison Blues is a great song but JC should only get a partial writing credit.

Shifting the music conversation, what is your choice for best cover of all time?

I don't know as I'd say "best," but I always enjoy hearing Ben Folds' version of "B!tches Ain't Sh!t" and Richard Thompson's "Oops I Did It Again."

Plus, most of Joe Cocker's performances.

And also, most of John Belushi's imitations of Cocker's performances.

Favorite music video ever?

For me it's She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby...with a shout-out to Simply Irresistible by Robert Palmer.

I was thinking about Triple Sec tonight .. can you have double or quadruple Sec?    Does it increase in value for each level?

If you don't have a lot of cash, do you just drink Sec?

This question sparked my curiosity. Apparently the etymology of the triple Is unknown.

I found this:

I also know there's a thing called Demi sec but I think it has to do with wine or Champagne.

I think the scale goes the other way.  One sec—very exclusive.

Triple Sec is supposed to be triple distilled orange flavored liquor.  But these days, it can just be alcoholic sweet orange flavored crap.  Don't use the latter in your margaritas!

https://www.barnonedrinks.com/tips/dictionary/t/triple-sec-922.html

But for those that haven't done a distillery tour, a column still can "triple distill" (or 5x, 7x, 20x...) something in a single pass, based on the number of plates in the column. If you're using pot stills, it's a lot more work.

Demi sec is sweet, literally translates to "half dry".
