Lots of great songs mentioned...including a few I didn't realize were covers.

One I forgot to mention was While My Guitar Gently Weeps by Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Tom Petty and Prince at the R&R HOF induction for George Harrison. Yeah, it was more of a tribute, but it technically fits the definition of a cover (new recording or performance by someone who didn't write the song), so I'm throwing it in....

The problem is have with Weezer's version of Africa is that it sounds almost exactly the same as the original. I prefer a remake where the artist adds something of their own; Weezer makes an exact duplicate, which is difficult but IMO doesn't add anything.

Even my 13 year old has that complaint.

Every time someone mentions Weezer, I think of The Jeffersons.

Is that just me?

How does this stripper song rate?

Haven't been in a while, covid and stuff.

But i would expect this to be a stripper song, while Hotel was completely unexpected.

"Save Room in the Lifeboat for Me" and "What Would You Do If Jesus Came to Your House Tonight" are right up there too, hey?

I celebrate the entirety of Marty Haugen's body of work.

Both really in their own way

Shifting the music conversation, what is your choice for best cover of all time?

In my opinion, "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix wins by a country mile.

Hendrix hands down, but Dave Matthews has a great cover version.

Africa - Weezer

(That cover turned both my teenage daughters into Weezer fans.)
Never liked Toto, and it is a cuss word in most latin countries.

Linda Rondstandt has an incredible amount of records sold, grammy awards etc and I believe literally every song she ever recorded was a cover. She said something to that effect in her recent documentary. Her theory was some people were good at making songs, her skill was at making them better.

Would definitely agree with that with a couple others in the running:

Johnny Cash- Hurt
The Clash- I fought the law
Elton John- Pinball Wizard
Joan Jett- I love Rock N Roll

I'm super late to this party, but I don't care.

Sublime version of "smoke two joints" is amazing as is their version of "54-46 was my number" and "were only gonna die"

Seriously they crushed it on their covers

I'll throw in Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Higher Ground

Johnny Cash was the greatest cover artist I've ever heard. Songs like Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, One by U2, and I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty were completely different when done by Cash and arguably as good or better. Loved his American series for the covers he had in there.

Yes.   His stuff at the end of his life with Rick Rubin was so powerful.

Johnny Cash did a lot of great cover songs, but my nod goes to Linda Ronstadt. As someone noted earlier, virtually everything she sang was written and performed by someone else.

Either way, two phenomenal performers.

Scott and I had a mutual friend so I would see him out at the bars back in the day and we'd chat over beers about musical tastes. He came to a party that my roommates and I threw and popped in a VHS of Local H (this was before they had any airplay) and I was like, "What is this thrash crap?" LOL.

Heard one today that is surprisingly fun.  Don't believe I have ever heard another song by this band.
