The Lens

Quote from: Lennys Tap on April 28, 2018, 10:35:10 PM
Met Frank Gifford, Alex Webster, Rosey Grier, Sam Huff and the rest of the NY Giants before an exhibition game VS the Bears when I was maybe 11 - my Dad was a friend of Giants head coach Jim Lee Howell in the Marines during WWII.

Met Ted Williams and Bobby Richardson at the American Legion World Series banquet in 1967 (keynote speakers).

Met Leroy Butler and Antonio Freeman at a taping of "The Pack Attack" at Turners (my daughter produced the show).

Met Dan Carey on multiple occasions at various venues.

Dan Carey is kind of an ass but Dan Cary is pretty legit.

My son-in-law played in the NHL for 11 seasons - 7 w/ with the New Jersey Devils, and 4 w/ the Detroit Red Wings. Been to 3 Stanley Cup parties.

Met numerous NHL families over the years, all great people. Had Thanksgiving dinner at Scott Steven's home one year.

One pic is of my grandson with Gordie Howe.

That brings up an interesting topic. What is the strangest connection you have with well known people.

I ran the Chicago marathon a few times back in the 90's. In one of those, Khalid Khannouchi set a new world record for the distance; meanwhile I was forced off the course to take a dump next to a building in the broad daylight.  No toilet paper. I finished the race strong, roughly 2.5 hours behind Khannouchi.

There was a topic on twitter today asking for the most mundane celebrity encounters ever. Some pretty good stuff in there.

I was on an elevator once with Chuck Daly.

My mom worked with (and to this day is good friends) Peggy Crane, who is Bill Murray's sister. About 10 years ago, my dad was out of town, and I accompanied my mom to Peggy's niece's wedding, and all the Murray boys were there. I was actually more excited to drink with Brian Doyle Murray than Bill (he had a crowd around him all night).

When I worked for the Bears at their fan fest in 2001, I had to escort players to/from their rooms to get them to the autograph areas. On opening night, Cade McNown was running late, so I had to go up to his room. He wasn't there, but his then girlfriend (playboy model) Heather Kozar was, and I got to escort her to the lobby. Don't remember whatever awkward conversation I had with her.

I caddied in the Michael Jordan golf classic for Bobby Anderson. Jordan was in the group behind us, so I waited inside the ropes after our round to try to get an autograph. Jordan saw me waiting and as he's walking towards me after his round he says "sorry kid, I gotta pee."

Same Jordan event, the first day of the event, they had too many caddies, so I got asked to stand at the first tee, and escort celebrities into a small tent, to sign a pro-am poster for that night's auction. Since I didn't caddy that day, I had a yardage book for Seven Bridges, and I told each celebrity they had to sign the yardage book too since it also was "for charity". Only person who didn't buy it was David Robinson, but I somehow convinced him. One celeb was fantastic, he came into the tent, asked me my name (I'm 13 at the time), and asked if there were any snacks. I looked around and said "looks like there's some Oreo's back here". I grabbed the bag, guy said "awesome, want to share some?" I ended up eating half a bag of Oreo's with Smokey Robinson.

Forgot to add this one, working the 2000 season for the Bears, I was walking from the press box to the media/player entrance down a long hallway at Soldier Field by myself, about two hours before a November Bears/Bucs game. Dick Stockton was calling the game that day and walking toward me. I said "good morning Mr. Stockton, gonna be a cold one out there today." He smiled and didn't say anything back. A solid ten seconds goes by, we both had kept walking opposite directions, he out of the blue says to me (mind you it's at least ten seconds later) "It's all relevant."

Back in the 90s, I was at a packed pizza place in Milwaukee (I believe it was when Giordano's was trying to make a go of it there). They were quoting hour-long waits for tables. Brent Musberger was in town to call a Bucks game and walked in while I was waiting and demanded to be seated immediately. The hostess declined and he pulled a DYKWIA on her and she says yes, but he'll still have to wait like everyone else.

He stormed out, and the hostess was an instant star.

I used to see Troy Aikman in the elevator pretty frequently, we worked in the same building for a number of years.

Chris Otule gave me a mixed drink he didn't want at Trinity that someone bought for him.

You been to the lake house in Waupaca then, I assume?

I remembered this one over the weekend.  On a flight from White Plains, NY to Washington DC, my friend and I sat a row behind John Sununu, the former governor of New Hampshire and Chief of Staff for the first President Bush.  This was like 2 years after he resigned for misuse of government planes.  He was scrunched in coach with his briefcase as a pillow and my friend and I joked that he was probably missing those Air Force One flights.

The same trip as we exited the airport we walked past JFK Jr. who was sitting in a Mercedes convertible with some model in the passenger seat and they were picking up someone from the airport.

I got a Vance Law signed baseball at Ipco Optical in Crystal Lake, IL circa 1988.

While working room service, I shared an elevator ride with Fred McMurray and Alan Shepherd at the Holiday Inn in the Falls during the '77 Vince Lombardi Memorial. Shook hands with McGovern @ Southridge while he campaigned there in '72.

I peed next to Henry Kissinger at Narita Tokyo airport in the early 90's.

Last summer glow and I took the same SWA flight from New Orleans to Chicago as Jesse Jackson.  I did not notice which boarding group he was in.  He appeared to be by himself, and spent his time waiting at the gate reading the Washington Post.

Can we get back to which Arby's condiment is better, please?

The key is to take the bottom off of your Beef N Cheddar and mix Horsey and Arby's sauce on the bottom bun.  Then you get a nice combination of the three best sauces surrounding your meat.

I went to the Lombardi a couple of times back in the day. Remember the time Gerald Ford bonked a spectator in the head with a wayward shot?

NYWarrior

Has anyone here tried Arby's tzatziki sauce? how does it rate via the horsey and traditional sauce?
