So I don't know if you fellas are aware that the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board has an entire website devoted to Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipes.  It's food porn at its Wiscy-est:

http://www.grilledcheeseacademy.com/

Any of you have a good recipe?  You could win $15,000.

Have some patience, FFS.

My personal favorite "basic" recipe":

Muenster and Cheddar, bacon, and grilled onions on multi-grain bread.  Use Land-o-Lakes Light Butter to grill (it spreads easier).
Have some patience, FFS.

My favorite grilled cheese includes 8-year aged Cedar Grove cheddar, with a spread of cottage cheese mixed with diced olives and pimentos on brioche. Need to do it on a low heat because the aged cheddar takes longer to melt.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

Grilled cheese condiment: Salsa and/or sour cream

Usually not a dunker though.  Some of my go to ingredients:

Squash & pepperjack

Mozzarella, tomato, and basil

Avocado and/or tomato & pretty much any cheese

Also, if you add meat it is no longer a grilled cheese.  It is a meat sandwich with cheese.

Personally, I think grilled cheese should have its own equivalent of the Reinheitsgebot.  Bread, cheese, 1 spread, 1 additional ingredient.  Anything beyond that is just a "hot sandwich."

Grilled cheese with crunchy peanut butter.

You had me until "one additional ingredient".
If you think for one second that I am comparing the USA to China you have bumped your hard.

I'll concede bacon since it doesn't usually get top billing.

Roast beef and cheddar, for example, I would never call  a "grilled cheese."

Bacon, especially crumbled bacon, would have to be an exception. I'd argue that flaked crab or lobster would fall in that category as well.

Definitely sharp cheddar for me...with a couple of thin slices of (NOT Red Delicious) apple.

Never heard of Mayo or ketchup on a grilled cheese....

Cmon people, all you need for a grilled cheese is bread drowning in butter and Kraft singles.

Bacon is a vegetable.  Safe on anything!

Shoot gonna try the horseradish sauce on a grilled cheese now. You all have me intrigued.

You need cheese to make a grilled cheese, not processed cheese food.

Yep. If you use cheese food, it's a grilled cheese food, not a grilled cheese.

adding Sriracha sauce to regular ranch dressing makes for a great salad dressing.

This is exactly what was on my salad for lunch (romaine, couscous, tomato, avocado, and smoked salmon) - awesome combo

As for grilled cheeses (i'm not sure where the line between a grilled cheese and panini is).....either prosciutto, smoked mozzarella, and pesto or chicken sausage, pepper jack and Dave's 'Devils Spit' pickles

A panini is a snobby grilled cheese.

I'm nothing if not a bit snobby.  Speaking of which, sourdough is the go to panini bread in the naginiF house.

Juan Anderson's Mixtape

Did some research via Google.  Several articles state that a grilled cheese is bread, cheese, and up to one spread.  Add anything else and it is a "melt."

One article even said all grilled cheese sandwiches are melts but not all melts are grilled cheese sandwiches.

So I've been making melts this whole time and calling them grilled cheese.
