Have any of you actually made a grilled cheese on an actual grill?

Did some research via Google.  Several articles state that a grilled cheese is bread, cheese, and up to one spread.  Add anything else and it is a "melt."

One article even said all grilled cheese sandwiches are melts but not all melts are grilled cheese sandwiches.

So I've been making melts this whole time and calling them grilled cheese.

What about multiple cheeses, or unconventional cheeses like cottage cheese or cream cheese?

Multiple cheeses ok according to what I read. Not sure about cottage cheese or cream cheese.  Those last two were not mentioned in the articles I read.

Why would anyone want to add cottage cheese? That stuff is vile.

Have some patience, FFS.

You're just not eating it right.

Bacon grease versus milk for Mac and Cheese, anyone?

Organic milk from grass fed cows, of course.

My favorite grilled cheese includes 8-year aged Cedar Grove cheddar, with a spread of cottage cheese mixed with diced olives and pimentos on brioche. Need to do it on a low heat because the aged cheddar takes longer to melt.

FYI to all - Cedar Grove cheddar is the best grilling cheese in the country.  Best cheese curds, too... especially when fresh.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I haven't had Cedar Grove curds, but Clock Shadow Creamery in the Third Ward has some amazing curds. Worth a trip every Wednesday and Saturday for the fresh ones.

Mac and cheese with BACON cooked in the smoker is pretty nummy.

Clock Shadow is awesome! We go whenever we are in Milwaukee.

Technically, I'm pretty sure it's in Walker's Point.

Sorry, folks.  Grilled Cheese is bread, butter (on the outside) and cheese.  And the only appropriate accompaniment is tomato soup. #childhoodsickfood

When Warrior fans grow up, it's grilled cheese with Sonoran Salsa, or go home.

And some BACON.

Never heard of maple syrup that's a new one to me. Is it a regional thing?

We got it from my grandpa.  Western iowa/south Dakota roots.  German heritage.  Was shocked that everyone didn't eat grilled cheese that way.

Feel like it's right in between. Right around the corner from the old Engine 3, so I think of it as the Third Ward (I know it's not named for the engine house).

So do you put the syrup on top and eat it with utensils, like French toast?

What do these "sources" say about a hot dog?  Is it a sandwich or not?

Merriam-Webster says a hot dog on a bun is a sandwich.

"We know: the idea that a hot dog is a sandwich is heresy to some of you. But given that the definition of sandwich is "two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between," there is no sensible way around it. If you want a meatball sandwich on a split roll to be a kind of sandwich, then you have to accept that a hot dog is also a kind of sandwich."

https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/to-chew-on-10-kinds-of-sandwiches/hot-dog

However...

"But a hot dog is not a sandwich, according to an official press release from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council."

"According to the council, "Our verdict is...a hot dog is an exclamation of joy, a food, a verb describing one 'showing off' and even an emoji. It is truly a category unto its own."

Pour syrup on the plate and dip.  Like a French dip, but with grilled cheese and syrup.

And just bread, butter on the outside and cheese.  Anything else is a hot sandwich.

Interesting. Never woulda guessed. Might try one for something different.

Now the really big question for everyone who does this - you do use real maple syrup, and not corn syrup with artificial flavoring...right?

Grilled Cheese with syrup is french toasty.   --  I like real maple syrup, but it's so damn expensive .. Kirkland brand is pretty good and cheap.

https://www.consumerreports.org/maple-syrup/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-maple-syrup/

Question .. does everyone store their syrup in the fridge?  I hadn't until I saw on the Kirkland bottle that you are supposed to.  That's kinda annoying.
