Never been off topic!

And incredibly, the only Scoop thread where politics are seldom mentioned by the same 15 posters.

Random thought today. How did I not know Mt McKinley was named Denali? Anyone have any seemingly obvious facts they did not know?

It was only a couple of years ago when I found out that hay and straw were different things.

The temperature outside an airplane at altitude. Depending on the altitude it's in the neighborhood of -40 to -70 degrees. I had no idea. When I saw that on the data channel on a recent flight, I thought it had to be a mistake.

Looking at the data midflight always reminds me of how little I understand about air travel.  Temperature and flight speed are great examples.  Another is flight path.  I woke up in the middle of a flight to SE Asia, flipped the data on, and saw that we were over like, the north pole or Russia or something and had a temporary red label+jet lag induced freakout about what was happening.

I remember a flight to HK and on that flight, whatever satellite the plane was using for WiFi was unusable in Chinese airspace.  So the WiFi was basically off above China.  The woman in the row in front of me was complaining to the FA about it.  When she heard the explanation she was BAFFLED because "HK is south of China.  If we are coming from the US, why are we flying over China for hours?  That is a mistake"
