Perez can't play due to transfer.

He could have if he filed a waiver.  NCAA approved basically all waivers this year.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Both carton and Perez left their teams during the season. Carton applied for waiver and got it. Perez did not want to apply. I think they should of applied for it a couple of weeks ago, since the year is a free year. Maybe they did and are waiting to hear the decision.

Eh, I've given up trying to convince 18-22 year olds what to do.  If he left for metal health issues and wants to take the time to acclimate to a new University in a new part of the country, far be it for me to tell him he should have applied for a waiver.  You never know what's going through these kids heads.

Didn't finish last season, and when he left GW early, he specifically cited mental health issues. Now granting waivers is where the NCAA is really a crapshoot so you never know for sure, but he would have had a solid case even without Covid.

Edit: I'm also not at all convinced of the whole "closer to home" thing is being considered at all, because while we don't know what happened behind closed doors, Virginia native Mac McClung transferring from Georgetown to Texas Tech and getting a waiver kind of spits in the face of that.

It's not the only reason for getting a waiver.

The closer to home thing was in reference to players applying for waivers specifically due to COVID. There are many reasons why a player could get a waiver. I think McClung's had a lot more to do with where he was transferring from than where he was transferring to

Of course it's not the only reason, but if you're citing mental health as a reason that you're applying for a waiver, and you can show evidence that it affected you so much that you couldn't complete your previous season and had to leave your program in the middle of it, that would go quite a ways in convincing the NCAA, because there are people out there that will play the system.  I've brought it up before, but the "illness" that Mustapha Heron's mom suffered from that he cited in his application was a concussion.  I'm not a doctor, but I would classify that as an injury not an illness.  None of this matters anyways because Jose made the decision with the staff that he did not want to apply, and wanted to redshirt.  I respect that decision, and can't wait to see him in action next fall.

While I'm sure that there's more to the story than was ever made public, didn't all the smoke around Gtown/Ewing pretty much die out once the two guys that were accused of sexual assault got more or less get kicked off the team?  Mac stuck it out the entire season, declared, got feedback, found out he wouldn't get drafted, and then decided to transfer, and still got his waiver.

I'm just saying, while I haven't followed every transfer this summer, I've heard of maybe one or two that didn't get their waiver approved.

I have followed every transfer this summer. There's been a lot more than 1 or 2. But yes, the NCAA has eased up considerably.

Really? This may not be the thread to discuss it, but what developments have there been since the accused players left? I haven't heard anything.

They'll save money on the recruiting budget.  That was an area where Marquette had a huge advantage.  Now the game is networking to locate talent, social media presences, and being able to market yourself on Zoom.  Luckily, MU isn't looking for tons of recruits -- mainly at least one big and a killer outside shooter.

Is this totally true? I sure MU has a huge advantage over mid-major schools. I do not think they had a huge advantage over most of the power 6 schools, which are the schools we are competing against for the best players.

Great. First dead people were voting. Now, they're getting recruited to play college hoops.

I think this was a recent decision based on Greg and Dex still behind and Jose’s performance.

The day DJ got his waiver I asked MU if a waiver had been requested for Jose, the SID specifically stated they had not and would not. Something changed at some point.

This makes sense. The idea of sitting out a year to improve loses some of its oomph when, due to COVID rules, one knows one can get another year of eligibility if one wants to. Might as well get to play as well as practice - one can improve a lot that way, too.
