Johnson was more heralded while at SJMA and had an erratic career while at MU. Williams was taller and was arguably the Gators best player.

For those who weren't around then, the Johnson and Williams recruitment demonstrated how high level MU was in recruiting circles back in the day. We were seeking out the First and Second team All American guys . Dwayne Johnson, Mandy Johnson who was the top player in New Jersey and played for Coach Hurley , Doc Rivers etc were all very highly sought after recruits .MU was being selective about who they took and Al still made recruit calls even after he retired.   Back then though, as you point out, DJ was very highly touted. Constant stories in the Milwaukee Journal and The Milwaukee Sentinel about Dwayne.   Williams was mentioned but was never the featured player.  It is almost unbelievable looking back that MU could have not pursued Williams, however we had so much juice recruiting back then our sights were set very high. Clearly in hindsight we all would have preferred Ronnie Williams over Terrell Schlundt.

Pretty much saw them all at Rick's camp held at DeSales. Some were counselors and played pick-up games at night. That's where Rick really made inroads with guys like Doc and Walter.

Also worth noting we were heavily recruiting guys like the McCray brothers, Terry Cummings, Aguirre etc. in and around those years. That basketball camp  you went to had to have been like a local version of the Rucker League.

I preferred Ronnie over DJ much less Schlundt.  Ronnie was a stud and he proved it at Florida.  Saw them play sevral times with SJMA.

I'm told that 2020 guard Luke Fizulich (White Plains, NY/@step_basketball) is committing to Marquette as a preferred walk-on. #mubb @AnonymousEagle @becb_sbn @lohudsports

Looks like he came from the same program as RJ Davis. 6'3" guard that averaged 16 ppg/5 apg. He got a lot of low-major looks but it doesn't seem like anyone actually offered. He was a productive player on a team with a couple high-major teammates.

Why not sign him up? Nothing wrong with a little insurance should things go terribly, terribly wrong

One of my good friends and roommates in college was from Louisville. Really good football and basketball player in HS, traveled all over the Midwest and South on teams in HS. Was talking about playing against Rajon Rondo in a tourney in Kentucky and the racist taunts someone was tossing. So I asked where the most shamelessly racist fans at a game were. I expected Kentucky, Cincinnati, or Tennessee. He immediately said "upstate NY". I thought he was just saying it to get a rise out of our other friend there who was from Rochester. But he said he played in Syracuse and Utica and they were both as outwardly racist as you'd expect from a southern cliche.

Marquette's Steve Wojciechowski and staff conducted virtual meetings with five-star junior Malaki Branham, four-stars Jordan Longino and Stevie Mitchell today, a source told @Stockrisers
.

Branham recently landed offer from the Golden Eagles.

Preferred walk ons are guaranteed a spot on the roster and can potentially earn a scholarship starting in their 2nd year(though nothing is guaranteed). A regular walk on is a try out player with no guarantee of making it on the team.

I'm finding 9.5 ppg last year on Max Preps, and just under 8 ppg his two years on varsity.

I'm good with filling out roster with guys like this, and for emergency depth. Madison has found a couple diamonds in the rough with preferred walk ons- Showalter, and I believe Jon Bryant on their '00 FF team.  Looks like he needs a ton of work in weight room to approach contributing a little, and even then, probably not athletic enough. We'll see.

Those could very well be AAU stats too. The site I found was pretty non-specific. But I am also a fan of adding guys like this, even if only as depth for practice.

It's a conspiracy theorist's dream. Play the long game, wait for RJ Davis to get frustrated at UNC with their plethera of guards. .....You never know. Caleb Love's first choice was Duke. But when Duke received a commitment from Jeremy Roach, he stopped considering Duke, even though Duke still recruited him.

Fizulich at minimum will be a very good team practice player that can catch and shoot, and has played with elite players against high level competition...with potential for more. Good pick up. And, Stepinac has had several good players over the years.

Zack Showalter had mid-major offers.  I recall Dayton and some MVC schools were involved.

IIRC, his dad played for Bo Ryan at Platteville.  A mid-major recruit with a family tie to Ryan, able to pay in-state tuition.  A very unique situation.

...based on comments I overheard a Badger fan make re: MU at a game at the Kohl Center during the Buzz era, some of those upstate NY folks now reside in Dane County.

No

BTW, recruiting isn't about just getting a collection of the highest rated players you can. It's also about fit with the team, the style of play, and the University.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
