Probability of success for any individual kid that is recruited is small. The stats show that the probability for playing in the NBA, where the best players play, is 5:1 in favor of athletic types. So why gamble and hope you can get one of the handful of unathletic types that work out .

What stats?

You got to sign somebody and by the way, the Badgers have done pretty good the last 20 years with a plethora of unathletic types.  I would have
been very happy with Sam, Frank, Bronson, and Happ.

I wouldn't classify all those players as 'unathletic'.

Yeah, Kaminsky was rather awkward but the other 3 were solid athletes.

Would you interpret this as "these are the only seven other schools we have to beat out", or "These are the 8 that he's highest on now, but there's time for others to get in the mix"?

99 percent of NBA players are "athletic types."

I would lean towards the latter.

Don't you have a Marquette basketball player you can crap on? Which hard-working contributor to the Warriors' success do you plan on ripping this season?

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Yeah, Kaminsky was rather awkward but the other 3 were solid athletes.

It's all relative.

Zion Williamson, for instance, is a physical freak -- one of the most outstanding athletes in college basketball over the past decade, potentially a once-in-a-generation type player. On a scale of 10, with 10 being the most athletic player in the NCAAs and 1 being the least athletic, he's a 10.

Davante Gardner, on the other hand, was one of the least athletic players I've seen at Marquette. Strong? yes. Good shooter? Absolutely. But Davante was slow, poorly conditioned, had no vertical jump, and really no offensive game outside of the post. On the same scale as above, I'd probably rate him a 2 or 3. There are worse athletes -- but not that many.

Someone like Junior Cadougan or Steve Novak I'd put at a 4. Not terrible athletes, but not terribly athletic, either. From watching Sam for three years, I'd put him at a 5 (average athleticism for a Division I college player).

A player like JaJuan Johnson falls in the 6-7 range. Jamil Wilson, Dominic James, Vander Blue are all probably something like an 8 or 9. Dwayne Wade was pretty clearly a 10.

Really?  He had terrible conditioning when he arrived, that improved some, and no vertical leap.  But otherwise I disagree with a lot of this.  He was a lot like the great OL players in the NFL.  Rotund, but quick, nimble, and agile.  He was only 6'7-6'8, but his footwork, flexibility, and touch allowed him to be super crafty.  He also had a decent handle and jumper by the time he left.  He wasn't Wade, but he's not the first person I'd think of for "unathletic".

Not taking a side here but critiquing someone's writing when you're being too lazy to use the word "you" and "your" is ironic.

Just to remind everyone, we are presently in a quiet period on the calendar for recruiting until September 8. So while there is some action , more will be happening in a few weeks.

The comparison to an offensive lineman is a good one. Granted, Davante's combination of size, strength, footwork and good hands is a form of athleticism. And he made the most of his abilities. He was an incredibly efficient offensive post player, using his body to establish great position and his shooting touch to finish at an impressive rate (57% for his career from the field).

But I wouldn't ever call him quick, nimble or agile -- at least compared to other basketball players. Craftiness is entirely different than athleticism. Davante was slow getting up and down the court and his lateral movement was so poor that almost anyone could get by him. That made him such a defensive liability that Buzz switched him out for Otule at every opportunity.

Davante's lack of quickness and a vertical jump also limited his ability to block shots -- just 45 in 127 career games. Compare that to 6-7 Jamil Wilson, a very athletic player who blocked well over twice as many shots (105) in the same number of career games.

Again, I wouldn't call Davante the least athletic player I've ever seen at Marquette. If he's a 2 or 3, Damon Key was probably at the same level or just below. Matt Heldt, despite being a hard worker and great teammate, was anything but a quick, fluid, athletic player. But I'd probably reserve my lowest rating for Youssoupha Mbao, who never really looked like he even belonged on a basketball court.

Alex Antetokounmpo is in training with Panathinaikos in the Greek League. I think this is straddling  a very thin line with the NCAA. According to the report it is just to stay in shape. I continue to think he would be a good prospect for MU.
