But, as to not rely on one source I looked up "mid major" in the Webster's Dictionary and the first definition is "The Big Ten".

I had to prove this beyond doubt, so I grabbed my trusty Roget's Thesaurus and saw the only synonym for "mid major" was "The Big Ten".
