Perez is a senior too.

And I think they will be looking for a SG regardless if Bates is here or not.  Relying on a freshman to fill that role just isn't great.

Thanks for the correction.  I forgot Perez wouldn't count agaisnt the limit if he stays at Marquette for his 5th year.

I'm not sure there is much room for Bates now.  Already have three guards coming in.

Was thinking the same thing. Bates, Mitchell, Ellis, and Jones are all combo guards. Shaka runs a guard heavy scheme, but hard to see 4 freshmen combo guards in the same class.

Quality over quantity.

Having depth and talent was an unseen luxury under Wojo.

So assuming Joplin is on board and Garcia returns, we still have three openings for next season correct?

DJ Carton
Justin Lewis
Greg Elliott
Dexter Akanno
Oso
Jose Perez

Stevie Mitchell
Kameron Jones

Dawson Garcia
David Joplin

I think that is right.  Got some wood to chop still.

UPDATED:

*2 spots remain if Dawson stays and Joplin joins as rumored*

Don't the existing players remain in the same class they were in due to the Covid year?

I assume the extra year gets tacked on at the end if they want it.

And Marquette wants to give it to them.

Correct, and that's also the year they wouldn't count against the scholarship limit.

Having said which, in Panama they use US currency but call it "Balboas."

A lot of Panamanians will actually get pissed if you say 'dollars' (this was particularly true during the Noriega era.)

If you were driving off Howard AFB you needed to have a cold six in the crew van because the PDF goon on a motorcycle would pull you over for no reason other than to shake you down. Amazing how a PBR six-pack kept you out of a Latin American gaol.
Maybe you're confused? The Balboa is actually their national currency which is valued 1:1 with US dollar, and unlike many nations the US dollar is legal currency in Panamá. Maybe they got upset at you for some other reason.

And, it's been this way for a very long time. There are no Balboa bills in circulation. You can find coins. People use American money and major credit cards all over Panama in all nine provinces, whether in the city or interior. There are ATM's everywhere that you would find them in the U.S. as well, malls, banks, wherever. You would have to go to a very remote area or somehwere in Darién to have an issue of some kind there.

Not a ton of hoopers, but some good baseball and soccer players can be found throughout the country.

Doesn't seem to me that Keefe's the one that is confused. Recapping (paraphrasing):

  • Keefe said they use US currency, but call it Balboa.
  • Newsdreams retorted that Keefe must be confused - Panama calls their currency the Balboa, but they allow US currency (i.e., "dollars")
  • Shoothoops confirmed that there are no Balboa bills in curculation (i.e., they use US bills)

Kind of hard to find fault with Keefe's post.  Mind you, I'm sure he did plenty of other things to upset the locals.

Always interesting what you can learn on 'Scoop.

Panamanians will not get pissed if you say dollars. And you will not get pulled over for no reason. I can't speak to someone else's specific experience 35-40 years ago or more.

Mariano Rivera

Sure. Both Rivera and the Yankees are popular there, as is New York City. Lots of past and present MLB players, as well as prospects. They have a competitive youth league and pro league which covers most of the ten provinces.

Their big stadium is named after Rod Carew.

Carlos Lee, Ben Oglivie, Rubén Rivera, Manny Sanguíllen, some names people here would remember.

There are about a dozen current MLB players from Panamá. Maybe 50 or more past players.

Baseball is very popular there, and, goes back a long way.

There are many current Panamanian prospects across MLB too.

Baseball and soccer are two of the most popular team sports there to play.  But many also follow other professional American team sports, and the Olympics are popular. Spain/Brazil, Barcelona, Real Madrid (club) and some others will draw much International soccer/World Cup popularity. (Much more than Mexico or the U.S.) NBA is popular.. U.S. college sports, hoops, etc...are less popular/known of course). MLB is popular.

Cool, diverse, place, kind people.

They don't call US currency the Balboa, their currency is the Balboa, like you know the Euro, the Pound, Rubles. This is why I said he might be confused, so not the same point you're trying make.
