Lots of my friends during my MU years, especially the Irish Catholics, loved ND in football but hated them (of course) in hoops. I had no trouble hating them in both!

As for Saturday, were I an ND fan, I'd be feeling pretty confident, too. ND is playing well lately, they're at home, and we're missing our 2 big men. Flip the situation around -- we were playing a rival at home, we'd been playing well and they were minus two key guys at one position -- and I'd be feeling good about our chances, too.

That being said ... we're gonna win!!! (He said, hopefully.)

I'm Irish Catholic and hate ND.

Dude, drinking a Guinness out of a paper bag while holed up on Gesu's steps doesn't make you an Irish Catholic.

A large portion of the Chicago south siders at MU root for ND football and Duke basketball - a sickening combo.

I am irish catholic, grew up on the south side of Chicago and I despise ND football.  Although, I was definitely a minority.  It probably didn't help having a parent who graduated from Miami (FL) and being a kid during the height of the Catholics vs. Convicts era.

Most south siders being Duke fans is not true.

Didn't realize 13K+ was half of 18K.

Domers aren't know for their math skills.

Not sure what they are noted for.....
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

I like the post too...

"Also a 1/2 empty arena with little student presence. *"

Commenting about the MU vs. SH game.

The Bradley Center is much bigger arena than the Joyce "Rec" Center  ;D  The real question is, why are tickets still available the Thursday before a game?  Or did they all jump on the IU bandwagon?

I don't understand your use of teal here. Teal is supposed to signify that you are being sarcastic.

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I know a single MU alum who roots for Notre Dame.  Everyone rips on him for it.

When Notre Dame lost to Syracuse in football a few years back, we were all at Caffrey's and a "F***the Irish" chant broke out when SportsCenter showed the highlights.  He got upset hahahaha.

I know an alum that not only roots for ND football, he has season tickets.  I've found a suitable penance.  My father went to Holy Cross and insisted that ND stole their fight song from Holy Cross.  So every time that ND football comes up, I just mention (again); "Hey did you know that they stole their fight song from....  It works every time.

As an Irish Catholic, I am constantly appalled that ND continues to denigrate a race of poets, playwrights, composers, and novelists by constantly characterizing them as barroom brawlers fit only for a paddy wagon!

Be sure to point out to your ND friends that Notre Dame is a school with a name in French, founded by a French order, masquerading as a bastion of Irish culture.

Also, I'm from the south side of CHI and have never heard of the ND football - Duke bball thing. I'd say the prevalent NCAA basketball team on the South Side is UIllinois.

I only root against ND when they play MU. My bro went to ND and we have learned we can't watch the game together.

In all honesty, Brey is a pretty good coach. Abromitis (sp?) was by far their best player and after a couple of weeks of adjustments, they are making it work. And Brey really doesn't work with a ton of "elite" talent. The game is pretty simple I think. If ND shoots well from 3, they win. Otherwise, I think we win. This is a game where we really need Gardner. ND has absolutely no one that can match up with him.

Not knocking Blue, but this would be a monster game for him matchup wise if he can understand how to finish by Saturday. That being said, I think this is a game that Mayo can really have a good game. I think there will be a bunch of driving lanes for us.

I'll admit it - I am an avid ND football fan. My dad graduated from Notre Dame and he took me to games all the time when I was a kid. The campus is gorgeous and the games days are a ton of fun.

That said, I loved going to Marquette, never root for ND in basketball and have a bet with my dad every time ND and MU play. I was part of the student section that stormed the court after we beat ND in 89 or 90 (can't remember which year it was exactly).

Absolutely love the Warriors and am heading back to Milwaukee next weekend to catch the Cincinnati game. But still root for ND when it comes to football - just can't shake all those years of following them before I headed to MU.

As an Irish Catholic, I am petitioning the NCAA to force Notre Dame to change their nickname. It suggests all us Irish Catholics are drunkards, belligerent and see imaginary little green men. Stereotypical slurs against a group of hardworking immigrants.

It a change is good enough for the WARRIORS, good enough for the Fighting Illini and others, it is good enough for the Fighting Irish too.

Thought there was actually a good discussion on their board on whether we will miss Gardner this game.  I am on the side that says this is a good game for him to be out.  I do not think Cooley can dominate offensively inside, and I think we can wear them down with pressure defense.  I like the matchup for us, our defense v. the burn offense.

Of course, Davante will always help when Buzz can go offense-defense with he and Wilson.

And I could be wrong about Cooley.  I did not think Hansbrough was going to be able to simply isolate and break down our guards last year.

Norm, think you need to seek treatment.  There are programs for you, ranging from 12 step to exorcism for the toughest cases.  Of course, the exorcism is performed by a Jesuit.   ;D

I like the matchup for us, our defense v. the burn offense.

This is a good point.  We are extremely aggressive on defense and our biggest weakness on defense is overplaying and leaving guys open with scrambling rotations.  If you run clock against us and are not opportunistic for all 35 seconds of the shot clock, you increase the likelihood of turning it over or settling for a less than ideal shot.  I noticed Seton Hall on several occasions let high percentage shots go untaken while trying to get better ones.  This is not a good recipe against us.

The key for us against ND is our defensive rebounding.  If we can keep the offensive rebounding percentage for ND down, we will make it tough for the Domers.  They have a tremendous homecourt advantage.  Without looking it up, it seems like lately (other than Senior Days) we pound them comfortably at home and lose a nail biter at their place.

Except for what I struck out, I could have made exactly the same post.  It's kind of odd reading a post that you could have written yourself...reminds me of the movie Memento.

I suspect the primary difference between our experiences was that because of where I grew up, the ND games that my dad took me to were at Air Force (every other year) and Colorado (once) -- and to the Orange Bowl against Alabama in 1974.  I didn't attend my first game in South Bend until I was at Marquette (the Reggie Ho game against Michigan). Aside from that, every fact in your post applies to me as well.

Interesting...when I lived in Boston I worked with a guy who was in the Holy Cross pep band when he was a student there.  He told me that they use the Marquette fight song.  According to him, they paid Marquette $1 per year in royalties..usually in the form of a giant game-show-type check.
Have some patience, FFS.

Can any of you older fans/alums post the lyrics for the MU parody version of Notre Dame's Victory March?

I've heard it a few times and really need to commit that to memory.  It's also the only song the Spanish O'Ds could do that we could all get behind.

Being from the South Suburbs and both parents immigrants from Ireland I can say that the majority of Irish do NOT root for Notre Dame. First generation Americans however do, not including myself.

I've been rooting for ND football since I was 5 years old when my dad took me to a game and bought me a pennant I kept on my wall through childhood. Definitely don't root for them like I used to, but still have a soft spot for football. Always like ND and Badger football and wondered who I would root for if they every played.  My D-Wade signed jersey is right next to the ND 30-yard line marker I stole after we stormed the field in 1993 after ND (#2) beat Florida State (#1). Went to a ton of games and always had a blast. I look forward to taking my son there for a game. While it has lost its luster recently, there's no denying it is one of those special places in football.

When I was at MU, they were are only real rival . Makes you realize how spoiled we are now in the BE. Seriously, we had 1 or 2 games a year to look forward to. The rest were Daytons, Evansvilles and Loyolas.
