I am a little surprised that 20 voters left us off their ballot entirely.

https://collegepolltracker.com/basketball/team/marquette-golden-eagles/2021

I'm not. We have the most losses of any ranked team with six, and I believe there are only four other five loss teams. I am surprised we made the poll but it's deserved and I'm thrilled that we did.

Maybe someone has already figured this out, but I wonder if there has ever been another team that went from not even receiving votes straight into the top 20?  If there was, I'd imagine it would have been a blue blood on a down year coming off of a week of big wins.  Which only means one thing:  we're a blue blood!

That's Parish's ranking, he does the top-25 and one (so top-26) every day but doesn't actually have an AP vote. 22 in the AP rankings.

It's nice to see the team get some recognition after not receiving a single vote last week.  The ranking could just as easily disappear with a pair of tough road games this week.  The ranking could also soar with a clean sweep!

Obviously all coaches entered different circumstances but just for fun I looked at how many games it took past MU coaches to get their team ranked.

Tale as old as time. But now our name is out there, if we have another very solid week they'll have to actually justify why they didn't vote for us.

Got it, my mistake.  Even still, jumping from no votes to #22 is pretty amazing.

Would be interesting to know how many returning players/recruits each coach had. Obviously Hank and Buzz are outliers in that regard, but what Shaka has done with an almost entirely rebuilt team is nothing short of remarkable.

Seth Davis at The Athletic had us #19.

His blurb:

• This is the first time all season I've ranked Marquette, and the Golden Eagles made the decision very easy. This team that was once 0-3 in the Big East has now won six straight games including two huge ones last week — at Villanova (the Wildcats' first loss at Finneran Pavilion since November 2018), and then on Sunday over Xavier. The win over the Musketeers was more impressive because Marquette was able to avoid the emotional letdown. This team plays a quick tempo and does a great job sharing the ball, and they have really settled in behind their three main offensive options, 6-7 sophomore forward Justin Lewis, 6-5 super senior guard Darryl Morsell, and 6-3 senior guard Greg Elliott. This being the Big East, things won't gets easier for the Golden Eagles over their next four games: at Seton Hall, at Providence, Villanova, and at UConn. But they clearly look like one of the top 20 teams in America.

I'd divide them up as:

Definitely Pass: North Carolina, Indiana, TCU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Colorado St, West Virginia, Oregon, Miami (FL), San Diego St, Iowa

Possibly Pass: Davidson, BYU, UConn, Texas, Loyola (IL), Xavier, Illinois, Iowa State

Won't Pass: Alabama, Tennessee, Providence, Ohio State, Texas Tech, USC

I'm going to guess #23

Close but no cigar. Really didn't think we would leapfrog Bama with them winning twice and knocking off LSU.

Feels like pollsters are discounting wins against LSU without Pinson.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Thank you for this contribution, however you should delete this post as it will trigger some here.  Any references to past coaches must be muzzled and immediately suppressed.

It would also be interesting to see how long they stayed in the Top 25 after making it in. With that it also goes back to what Shaka said in the postgame interview against Xavier, I don't care what we're ranked in January, I care what we're ranked in March. A good message to spread to the players.

I'd want to know receiving votes as well because I've always thought it's easier to get into the Top 25 if you start there than breaking into it from the outside.

I hear ya but six quad 1 wins and a #5 SOS is nothing to sniff at.  MU deserves their ranking and this is just the very beginning of our resurgence.  Regardless how the season pans out by mid-March.

27 coaches poll

Despite wins over 4 top 25 and one Recieving votes.

Hope the team can use that disrespect as fire this week as opposed to getting too high from the AP 22

Great accomplishment for the program. Now it is time stay ranked. I do not think this will be the last week we are ranked this season. Defense travels!!!

Now for many teams the difference wouldn't matter.

But a big reason for us having 6 losses is our number of games played.

We've been fortunate to this point(knock on wood) to have only 1 game delayed.

Looking at the top 25 almost everyone is below our 20 games played. And I'm sure there are not many teams in general with 21+

If you want to unnecessarily raise your blood pressure, look to see who those 20 schmucks had on their ballet.

I was first mad at Jesse Newell for putting Texas at 16, but then I saw he had Wisconsin at 25, so it evens out, and the Dayton writer clearly has Marquette envy.

They already are per what someone heard this morning in the study hall for athletes only in the Al.
