Good conversation about MU PGs, Dr. B, Goose and others.

I was at MU when Worthen was there and I borderline worshiped his playing ability ... and yet I think Kolek is the best passer I've seen in a Marquette uniform since I entered MU in 1978.

I like Dr. B's line about the story still being written. Diener almost singlehandedly won an NCAA tournament game and it was he, not D-Wade, that pretty much carried that team into the Sweet 16. I have absolutely no doubt that Kolek is a better all-around PG than Tony Miller, but Miller carried a team into the Sweet 16.

It's a damn shame that Kolek got hurt last year, but he'll have another chance this year. NCAA tournament success might be a crapshoot, but it's hard for a college player to establish a true legacy without experiencing some NCAAT success.

Can't wait to see Tyler do that this March - and hopefully April!

Most here don't like UW's style of play, but damn they keep winning.

Winning what? They haven't made it to the second weekend since 2017, winning a grand total of 2 NCAAT games in that span (1 more than Marquette, and 2 more than Chicago State).

They even managed to lose 4x to Wojo, which is no mean feat.

Bo had that nice run with the Kaminsky group, and as an MU fan and Madison hater, that sucked big-time. Since then, though, Madison has been just another decent to good program that has had some successful regular seasons, some bad seasons (including last season) in which they didn't even make the tourney, and little NCAAT success.

If the retort is that they've done better than Marquette in that span ... that's not a ringing endorsement for either program, really.

I'm biased, but I'll take what Shaka's got cookin' over what Gard does. Time will tell.

Success in March is a good metric to judge point guards, and Tony Miller drove through Kentucky to get the Warriors to the Sweet 16.  Do I think Kolek, Diener, or James is better?  Yes, all of the above.

However, I would rank Miller higher than James or Kolek based on that performance against Kentucky.

Kolek has the opportunity to make a statement in March.

Yep, for years we heard over and over again that individual accolades mean nothing without tournament success. Kolek still has an "incomplete" right now, and as impressive as yesterday was, I would have traded it for a healthy hand last March.

Tony Miller wasn't as good as Kolek. I don't even think it's particularly close. But, in addition to being a darn good PG, Miller beat Kentucky to put Marquette into the Sweet 16 that year.

Tony Miller was a pure point guard in that he wasn't asked to score, just handle the ball, beat the press, rack up assists.  Tony's game combined with Tyler's scoring ability would be a lottery pick.

That takedown of Kentucky was such a high point at that time but was KO's last win for MU as well.  Bittersweet.

Sorry I struck a nerve. I was just commenting on Goose's comment on style. He obviously prefers Shaka'a style of play. I think most MU fans could care less what style of play we play as long as we win. So far when we play UW, Gard's style is winning out over Shaka's style. I hope that changes.

Just the notions that Madison is some kind of special basketball program or that they "always find a way" ... 1, it's not true; 2, it's Madison envy, and for no reason. It gets tiring.

As for "style," in the 2022 game vs MU, Gard's style was to let Hepburn pull up from 30 feet and throw in shots. Unfortunately for Madison, that kind of brilliant strategy can't work over the course of a season, and they didn't even make the tourney.

Maybe he's a Cardinals fan

Brother Rico:

Doubtful. If he was, he'd have a 4.0 GPA and be leading the team in academic performance too!

Its nice to have a player that the Big East fan base despises. Wasn't there a thread about the most despised players we played against?

About 15 years ago, the most despised would have been Eric Devendorf of Syracuse.

I still despise  Devendorf.
