You wouldn't want to take away from all the great views of people's roofs, man.  So much for Freedomland.

Florida has nothing to do with this, communal living does. This is about people giving up individual freedoms for what the community as a whole decides. Surprised you find that so awful.

Brother Lenny:

Absolutely correct. I could probably push the issue, but I live with these people and sometimes you have to accept the will of the majority.

As for Florida and solar power, those of you who think our state is lagging the nation, you're ill-informed. Florida Power, our utility, is one of the largest producers of solar energy in the nation. West of Port St. Lucie is a huge solar field that's getting larger by the week. Drive along Interstate 10 between Lake City and Tallahassee and it's solar fields galore. And this is just the start.

For those of you who hate us -- of course we'd use solar. After all, we're the Sunshine State. We have a concern in that solar energy is less efficient than it is out west because airborne moisture deflects solar energy and so our solar panels are in total less efficient. We also get more rain. But solar will be a major source of future electricity in Florida.

Insert joke about not accepting election results.

I would hope you agree that just because a community decides something doesn't mean it is immune from criticism.

Besides,  as was pointed out,  Florida passed a law banning HOAs from banning solar panels. So the Florida community as a whole has decided the HOA should give up its individual freedom

A good hunk of the solar down here was in long before the Inflation Reduction Act. Most of the solar was installed made predicated on an investment return that met hurdle rates.

My view is thank you Florida Sunshine. In addition to making February tolerable, it makes solar profitable!

Nifty alternative to back-up generators down here in Florida.

The big debate in our home is do we sign up for natural gas to get the capability to have a back-up generator.

[snip]

As long as you have enough power for the AC, refrig, wine cooler and modem, you're fine.

Right.  My all in price (installed, permitted, connected) is almost exactly $20k after 30% fed tax credit (all might not have enough liabilities to be eligible), ~$5.5k from xcel, and ~$1.2k CO tax credit (for battery).  A good friend had a natural gas whole home Gererac installed for ~$11k.   Of course, I don't have natural gas service.  I could have a propane tank installed, but...more expense....so solar with a PW made more sense.  Especially since it'll likely pay itself off in 8 years (with $0 electric bills).  A Generac never really "pays itself off" - but is convenient.

Maybe it's all marketing, but the solar installer also claims the system / panels will basically immediately add $20k value to the house.  I'm not counting on it, but I'd believe it adds value.

The PW3 will do continuous 11.5kW, though the battery is "only" 13.5kWh so only a little over an hour if your using the whole capacity - and maybe not enough if you want to run the hot tub, dryer, oven, and water heater at the same time..  However, if I know I'm on battery, I can probably stretch it out to...well forever assuming it mostly charges the next day (only should take a little over 1hr of sun in my system).

Yeah the 30% federal tax rebates for homeowners have nothing to do with it.

Nah, that's not communal living, it's fascism, old man.  Even the communists let you decorate your home however you want.

There's nothing utilitarian about denying people the ability to generate their own electricity.

Obviously, a person who has never lived with an HOA.

When you buy a home covered by an HOA, there are certain declarations, deed addendums and documents you sign acknowledging the HOA, its authority and that you're subject to the articles of incorporation and rules laid down by the Board. You accept that or don't live in an HOA-governed community. Think of it as a mini-municipality.

The decorative restrictions are designed to keep a community looking consistent and well-maintained. In a community of white, tan and beige homes, do you really want to give someone the opportunity to paint their home hot pink?

Easiest way to thwart most HOAs: retain a lawyer. They'll crumble so fast, they'll make the Indianapolis 500 look like a footrace.

Our solar is large solar farms covering acres of land and installed, maintained and owned by Florida Power.

Maybe there's a corporate tax incentive somewhere.

HOAs have no redeeming characteristics

Managing communal property is the redeeming characteristic. Retention pond management and beautification. Amenities like a pool or gym or security. Walkway/stair maintenance on communal property.

They just tend to overstep their bounds when they try to regulate how you manage your personal property. It makes sense to prevent people from turning their front lawn into a holding space for abandoned cars. It does not make sense to regulate architectural decisions or paint color decisions or fence/lawn/garden decisions.

It's usually real estate agents that think they know best, but instead are just busybodies relishing in their newfound power. That's the same for highrises in Chicago (where we need an HOA to manage the elevators and stuff) or suburban HOAs.

Tend to overstep bounds is an understatement.

Like this HOA that installed speed cameras and is imposing fines of $250 (first offense) to $1,000 to anyone driving above 15 mph.

https://www.fox5vegas.com/2022/04/08/neighbors-voice-concerns-over-high-fines-speed-camera-tickets/

Or this person fined more than $1,000 and threatened with a lien for painting her shutters the wrong color, even though all her neighbors signed petitions saying they were fine with the color.

https://abc11.com/troubleshooter-homeowners-association-hoa-debra-blue/3018009/

Or this one that used Google satellite images to locate a shed that otherwise was not visible from the street and had been on the property when its current owner bought it. They told the new owner, three years after he moved in, to remove it or they'd place a lien on his property.

https://www.hoaleader.com/public/Are-You-Going-Too-Far-in-Searching-for-HOA-Violations.cfm

Or this one which demanded a 92-year-old disabled guy to remove the bench outside his home, which had been there for 10 years and allowed him to step outside and visit with neighbors. Their suggestion for this 92-year-old disabled man? Carry a chair inside and outside every day.

https://www.abc15.com/news/let-joe-know/neighbors-rally-for-senior-who-just-wants-somewhere-to-sit

The existence of HOAs isn't a problem. The way they're managed is the problem.
While these HOAs are theoretically run by residents, the rules are put in place by the home builder before anyone moves in, and then typically enforced by a for-profit management company that has a $$$$ incentive to find and punish even the most irrelevant of violations.

Applies to community projects as well.

Also there are domestic manufacturing credits, domestic content credits, as well as US solar companies having the ability to sell their production tax credits to other companies. All of this facilitates and subsidizes the growth of solar.
