Crazy that she was a teenager during the bombing of London in WWII, and was still vibrant in her late years. Truly an amazing life.

96 years will tend to have it's ups and downs.  She lived a long life of extreme luxury.

There's a reason why the vast, vast, majority of people admired and respected Queen Elizabeth and think much less of her scions.

A fascinating case study in the duality of a century of life lived constantly in the public eye and in high leverage positions.  No better example of how legacies are rarely black and white but ever evolving shades of grey.  She's viewed as beyond reproach and bathed in glory by some and pure evil by others.  Neither are totally true but such is life.

An incredible legacy in many ways at the forefront of modern history at the very least.

She became queen as the war-devastated was getting back on its feet, served through the period when London became one of the world's preeminent financial centers and watched as Britain resumed its place of influence in the world.

Would love to have listened to Queen Elizabeth compare the greats among our American leaders -- Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan and Kennedy come to mind -- with some of our more recent offerings.

The Queen presided over the end of the Empire. She was a symbol of what Great Britain was and is. While I don't have a lot of respect for King Chuckie I of Tampax, Queen Elizabeth certainly left Chuckie with with an amazing legacy.

I mean... it's in the constitution, so I doubt it.  Charles will be around a couple of years, and then William will be King for decades.  He's cut from the same cloth as his grandmum.

I don't think she was a big fan of American leadership for quite some time brother dgies.  And yes, Chuckle is a British Fredo in comparison.  She probably had tremendous anxiety over the last few years about a number of things going on in the world.  I thought she'd live to 103.

Charles is Fredo compared to who? The Queen?

Charles is going to be fine - because the job is almost entirely symbolic.

Agreed.  I think Elizabeth guided the UK through a lot and was a symbol of strength and unity to them in some trying times in a way that Charles would struggle to...but that is far in the past and nothing he would be asked to do now would remotely compare

Since Wallis Simpson, the most detested person of the royal family at the time, attended the funeral of the Queens's father I would imagine Meghan attending the Queen's funeral unless she herself decides no to. Not sure how well that would sit with Harry though.

The Queen did a great job over the years. Not talking about the Pomp and Circumstance. Rather, the behind the scenes measured leadership . As head of state of so many nations, she was sought after by prime ministers for her counsel and judgement of the important matters of the day.

Obviously her family was a train wreck, but that doesn't diminish her achievements .

William Manchester says that for our parents 'generation 4 events stand apart :Pearl Harbor, the death of FDR, the election of 1948 and the JFK assassination. For me as a boomer I guess it would be the three assassinations and the night they announced that the Vietnam war was over. But the queen's death is a biggie.

Agreed.   To me, this is nearly a non-event.    I understand Britain needs to go through their grieving and mourning.    I respect that and leave them to it.     She wasn't my queen.    She was 96.     She had a full and glorious life.   This isn't a tragedy or someone taken from us too soon.    This is just an inevitable step in the circle of life.

But to Fluffy she's essentially just symbolic like other monarchs because she had "no legal authority"  And even if you think she was essentially symbolic, there are levels and nuances to the significance of any figurehead.  Also, Manchester should have clearly consulted Fluffy before he rendered his opinion on watershed events.   Btw his Churchill biographies are the absolute best.

I think not being the hands on mom was her greatest regret. I think it is a lot tougher to be queen and a devoted mom then king and a devoted dad. Her devotion to the crown always took precedent over her duty to her family. I can't imagine being a child, teenager and young adult and have to schedule an appointment to see my mother.

And because symbols can be important, I’m not so sure “Charles will be fine”. Unlike his Mum, he’s a total goofball. The monarchy will be “fine” again (to the extent it matters) when William takes over.

Twitter is ablaze. A video of Irish soccer supporters chanting about Lizzy being in a box, and the back and forth over a Carnegie Mellon University linguistics professors tweets about wishing QEII an excruciating death are fascinating. I don’t think I will ever understand the deep reverence and the unabashed hatred for the monarchy. It has been a lesson in perspective, the telling of history, how compassion is viewed. It is absolutely fascinating.

Let that be her epitaph - on her gravestone the words:

             Here lies Megan Markle
An awful person, but her uncle in law was worse

Is she an awful person? I have no idea.

To the Brits the Queen is the keeper of British traditions. They look at her life as one of service to the Crown and the State.  I don't neccessarily agree but that's their deal.

Many years ago , in the pre internet and cell phone era , I was on the Board of a Multi National Company that had significant interests in The UK

We were having some issues with leases renewals on a number of properties in the Mayfair area of London . The Corporate Secretary of the UK division was going on and on about the Crown this and the Crown that with respect to these negotiations . Some correspondence was passed around and it had stationary with  a Crown as the letterhead , no name or anything else

So finally after much discourse and debate  , as a typical “ Ugly American”, I raised my hand as said “ Who the Hell is this Crown that you people are all in fear of ?”

The Corporate Secretary , with classic English undershot jaw , said “  Sir, The Crown is her Majesty The Queen”

At that point it was explained that the Monarch controlled substantial amount of land and commercial property all throughout the UK. That it was held in Trust and managed for her benefit as well as the country

We also had similar dealings with the The Duke of Westminster also known as ,Earl Grosvenor,  who owned the other land not owned by The Crown.

I learned then that all these sovereigns were essentially land owners from hundreds of years ago , who back in the day fielded their own army’s . As the world evolved they gave up their army’s but kept their property . Earl Spencer , Princess Dianas family ,owned substantial amounts of South Africa .

I saw all the cancellations and thought this at first too. But then again, we're not far from electing presidents who are actuarily unlikely to outlive their terms, so who are we to judge.

I wonder how the Queen's death will affect the final season, 6, series the Crown on Netflix? At least the script writers and actress playing the Queen now knows she is going to die at the end.

I wonder if Oprah will play Oprah in one of the final season episodes.

People caring this much about Meghan markle make as much sense to me as people who are still pissed off about the last Jedi.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if the Monachy is finished within 10 years.  Maybe sooner.
nah.  People like William and Kate.  The quicker they take over the better chance it has to go another 50 years or so at least.

Kissinger please.

The fact that he has survived this long means he has already won. A painful enough death does not exist.

I just found out that the woman who played Kai Winn on Star Trek DS9 and Nurse Ratched on "One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest" died last week.  Maybe that's the third.

I've come to the conclusion that every time someone mentions his name he gets to live another day.

She was a groundbreaking songwriter. She didn't exactly stand by her man in her lyrics.
Have some patience, FFS.
